Our discipline wasn't there, but then a lot of kids stepped up and made big plays (in the second half). I was pleased with the way our kids competed. Matt (Sprester) and Ryan (Englebert) are as close to 100 percent as they are going to get and I think everyone feeds off the emotions of what those two have done and what they have been through. This conference is very rarely decided on one game, but last year we started in a hole. This game gave us more confidence. It shows the kids all of the little things we have been working on are paying off."Our first goal of the year is to always take care of our non-conference opponents, and this is another game to take care of. Waldorf is an established program with a very powerful junior college football tradition. They have a very young group of kids that are looking to gel." Ryan Englebert (So, Sturgeon Bay) and Matt Sprester (Sr, Amery) both showed they were recovered from an automobile accident last October that ended their 2003 season. Englebert started off the third quarter parade with a 55-yard touchdown jaunt, splitting two would-be tacklers and heading for paydirt only three minutes into the second half. Sprester followed suit three minutes later, taking a pass in the middle of the field and racing 53-yards for the score to put Stout (2-0, 1-0) up, 28-7. Stout wasted little time getting on the board again in less than a minute. Oshkosh quarterback Nick Wara had a pass batted back to him, but then was hit and fumbled the ball. Stout linebacker Stephen Schils (Fr, Green Bay) picked up the loose change and scored from 13 yards out for a 35-7 lead. The Titans (3-1, 0-1) drove, but only managed a field goal at the 5:50 mark of the third quarter. Two minutes later, Stout quarterback Nick Ohman (Sr, Glenwood City) found Jesse Wendt (So, Chetek) on the visitors sideline and hit him in stride. Wendt bobbled the ball a couple of times, but hauled it in and went 48 yards to score and a 42-10 Stout lead with four minutes left in the period. Englebert added another score in the fourth period, a 21 yards run. The Titans score with 1:40 left to close out the scoring. Stout jumped out to a 7-0 lead only two minutes into the first half. John Henry Freeman (So, St. Louis, Mo) scored on a 9-yard pass from Ohman. The score was set up with a 37-yard pass from Ohman to Sprester. The Titans tied the score at 7-7 on a Wara two-yard run with three minutes left in the quarter. Stout answered back on the ensuing drive. Wendt returned the kickoff 22 yards, then hauled in a 20-yard pass from Ohman. Seth Mattison (Sr, Byron, Minn) also pulled in a 20-yard pass, setting the stage for Englebert's first score on the day, a 2-yard run. Stout tallied 416 total yards of offense, 241 in the air, 175 on the ground. Ohman completed 9-of-22 passes for 204 yards. Sprester made four catches for 113 yards, while Wendt had three grabs for 90 yards. Englebert rushed 16 times for 122 yards. The Titans finished with 283 yards of offense, 154 by rush, 129 by pass. Wara completed 14-of-33 passes for 108 yards. Andy Moriarty rushed for 60 yards, and Wara for 38. Stout will be a Waldorf College, Saturday, Oct. 2. September 22, 2004BACK AT STOUT AFTER WORKING TOGETHER By Scott BarthelUW-Stout Sports Information Assistant They have been friends since they walked onto campus. They have lived together, worked out together, played football together, and since one horrible October night last year, they have also lived the same life together. Nearly a year ago, on Oct. 1, 2003, Matt Sprester (Sr, Amery) and Ryan Englebert (So, Sturgeon Bay) were on their way to Spresters parents home near Amery for a late evening dinner when they were involved in a car accident. Both of the UW-Stout football players were rushed to Amery Regional Medical Center. They were later transferred to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis where they stayed for a week. Sprester had three surgeries on his foot; Englebert never had surgery, but his hip was severely damaged. For the following month, their parents, family, and friends took care of them, as they were both bed ridden at their respective parents' homes. However, it isnt in their nature to just lie around or feel sorry for themselves, so they decided to do something about it. They teamed up together, lived with Spresters parents and traveled to Burnsville, Minn., daily for rehabilitation. "The doctors said we wouldnt walk until February," said Englebert, "but we saw an accelerating rehab specialist in Burnsville, and he had us walking by mid-November." "Walking again was unbelievable," Sprester said. After a month of rehab, the two headed to Lake Geneva and finished rehabilitation with Engleberts brother, Cory. The pair worked out with the personal trainer two to three times a day from January to August. We owe a lot to Cory," said Sprester. "Without him, we wouldnt be here."While working out in Lake Geneva, the two worked harder than ever before, and it paid off. Sprester said he is bigger, stronger, and as fast as he was before the accident. Englebert was timed doing a 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds, his fastest ever. Not only did these two get into as good of shape as before the accident, but they also met their goal: be ready for the season opener. For the first time in almost a year, Englebert and Sprester joined the Blue Devils to beat DePauw University in the season opener. Englebert had 58 yards rushing and caught eight passes out of the backfield for 28 yards. Sprester had one catch for 21 yards. Both players were a little sore after their first game, but were simply happy to be a part of it. It was definitely emotional," said Englebert. "Before the game, we looked at each other, and we had tears in our eyes."According to the doctors, neither player was supposed to play football again. However, through hard work, determination, and support from family and friends, these two made it back on the field, - and they did it together.
