BLUE DEVILS WILL ATTEMPT TO GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK

UW-River Falls Falcons (1-4, 1-2 WIAC) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (3-3, 1-2)
Saturday, Oct. 25, 1 p.m.
Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Menomonie, Wis.

ON THE LINE:
UW-Stout has made it more difficult to snag the WIAC title after last week's loss to UW-Whitewater, but there is plenty of season still remaining - and in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), anything can happen. UW-River Falls, with their wishbone offense, always presents a challenge and the proximity of the schools sets a long-time rivalry in motion. The two teams are in a five-way tie for fourth place.

LAST TIME OUT: Stout: UW-Stout controlled the stat sheet, but the biggest stat that jumped off the page were turnovers as the Blue Devils turned the ball over five times - three fumbles, two interceptions - in a 28-23 loss to UW-Whitewater, Oct. 18. Stout had 30 first downs to eight for Whitewater and racked up an impressive 519 yards, while holding Whitewater to 271 - which 80 yards came on the Warhawks' opening 2-play drive. Trailing 28-3 in the fourth quarter, Stout scored three times to close out the game.

River Falls: John Peterlik ran for a career-high 324 yards and tied a career-high with four touchdowns as the Falcons beat UW-Platteville, 44-21, for their first win of the season. Peterlik's big day was just short of the WIAC single game rushing record set by Stout's Luke Bundgaard in 2000 when Bundgaard ran for 335 yards. Peterlik scored on runs of 45, 39, 30 and three yards and the Falcons wracked up a season-high 516 yards on the ground. The Falcons led 21-0 and held a 35-7 advantage at the half. The Falcons out-gained the Pioneers 589-378 in total offense and won the turnover battle 3-1.

LAST SEASON: Stout and River Falls are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 7-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third with Stevens Point and Whitewater) in the WIAC. River Falls was 3-7 overall, 2-6 (tied for 6th) in the WIAC.

THE SERIES: River Falls is Stout's longest running opponent, and this week's game will be the 109th meeting that dates back to 1911 with a 13-11 River Falls win. River Falls holds a 64-24 lead in the series, but Stout has won the last three meetings, including a 21-7 win last season at River Falls. The Blue Devils held the Falcons' wishbone offense to 133 yards. Stout's Ryan Englebert scored the only points of the first half, and backfield partner Luke Bundgaard scored twice in the second half. Bundgaard opened the third quarter with a score, but the Falcons tightened the score to 14-7 with 2-yard score by John Peterlik. Bundgaard put the game on ice in the fourth quarter.

STOUT PLAYERS TO WATCH: RB Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaeuser) 139 carries, 726 yds, 5.2 y/car, 121.0 y/g, 3 TD, Stout's all-time rushing (3692) and scoring leader (186 pts); QB Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) 160 att, 76 comp, 4 int, 1026 yds, 13 TDs 171 y/game, 68 car, 209 yds, 3.1 y/car; FB Matt Schaeuble (Jr, Wrightstown) 20 car, 81 yds, 4.1 yd/car, 1 TD; WR Dan Austin (Jr, Clintonville) 20 rec, 282 yds, 6 TDs; SS Kevin Dewey (Sr, Burnsville, Minn) 47 tackles, 31 solo, 2 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles; DB Jordan Sinz (Jr, Edgar) 35 tackles, 23 solo, 1 tackle for loss, 2 int, 2 forced fumbles; NG Matt Mueller (Sr, Chaska, Minn) 26 tackles, 17 solo, 4 tackles for loss of 16 yds; DL Joe Kersten (Sr, Menasha) 21 tackles, 12 solo, 6 tackles for loss of 31 yds, 3 sacks for 27 yds; Chuck VanderLinden (Sr, Golden Valley, Minn) 28 tackles, 22 solo, 4 tackles for loss of 17 yds, 1 sack; Blue Devils avg 414.8 total ypg, 238.3 rushing, 176.5 passing; give up 310.8 total ypg, 120 rushing, 190.8 passing. OFFENSIVE LOOK: Falcons: wishbone; Stout: multi-pro. DEFENSIVE LOOK: River Falls: 4-4; Stout: 3-4.

COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (52-54 career) is in his 11th year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. UW-River Falls coach John O'Grady (84-56-2) is in his 15th season.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(About UW-Whitewater game) If we are going to compete at the championship level, we can't turn the ball over. Our defense produced eight consecutive (Whitewater) 3-and-outs, and we couldn't complete it. When we watched the game on film, we looked like we were playing pretty well. We just didn't score enough points. We are missing our big play capability.

"We don't focus so much on the wishbone as we used to (in preparing for River Falls). You can't scheme a wishbone, so we just attack it with our defensive set. They have a really nice offensive team. Now we have to focus on winning a game at home. We have identified three areas where we need to improve: 1.) our return game; 2.) we have not been forcing enough turnovers on defense; and 3.) our perimeter play."

BLUE DEVILS TURN OVER GAME TO WHITEWATER, 28-23

MENOMONIE
- UW-Whitewater game into Saturday's game with UW-Stout by leading the conference in turnover margin. It showed.

The Warhawks took a 28-23 win over UW-Stout, Saturday, Oct. 18 in Menomonie, thanks to five Blue Devil turnovers. Coming into the game, Whitewater held a plus-9 turnover margin and only built on that statistical lead.

Stout controlled the offensive stat sheet in the first half - and for the entire game - running off 47 plays to the Warhawks' 24 plays, as Stout gained 201 first half yards to Whitewater's 147. But Stout came away with only a field goal as they trailed 14-3 at halftime after coughing the ball up twice.

The Warhawks (5-1, 3-0 WIAC) scored twice in third quarter, once on a Keiya Square 16-yard run at 6:49 and again with 17 seconds left in the period when Kyle Mayhugh sauntered in from the 9.

The Blue Devils (3-3, 1-2 WIAC) put on a torrid comeback in the fourth quarter.

Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) connected with Dan Austin (Jr, Clintonville) for a 29-yard pass to the Whitewater 7 on the Blue Devils' first drive of the quarter. But Ohman was sacked - he was sacked five times on the day - at the Whitewater 20 for second and goal. A Whitewater penalty gave Stout a first down at the 10, and Ohman hit Austin in the end zone to pull Stout to within 28-9 with 9:27 left in the game.

Using all three timeouts during a Whitewater drive, Stout stopped the Warhawks. Stout started on their own 9, and Ohman completed six passes over 11 plays, capping the drive with a 12 yard TD pass to Austin to pull to within 28-16 with 5:35 remaining.

Stout recovered the onside kick, but Andy Walters picked off Ohman first passing attempt of the drive.

Again Stout stopped the Warhawks, and again Ohman marched the team downfield, passing four times and running once for all 88 yards of the drive in five plays. Ohman hit Austin for 25 yards on the first play of the drive, connected with fullback Matt Schaeuble (Jr, Wrightstown) for 22 yards on the second play, ran for one yard on the third, hit Julio Vargas (Jr, Sturgeon Bay) for 17 yards on the fourth play and finished the drive by finding a leaping Vargas in the corner of the end zone for a 23-yard pass with only 37 seconds remaining in the game.

The ball was kicked out of bounds, and Whitewater ran out the clock.

The Warhawks, who are now in sole possession of first place thanks to UW-Stevens Point knocking off UW-Eau Claire, showed they meant business on their first drive, scoring on a 76-yard pass play as Mike Askren hit Jim Lesczynski with a perfect pass over his shoulder down the visitor's sideline with only 45 seconds off the clock.

On the following drive, Stout marched to the Whitewater 1, but were turned back and settled for a field goal.

Then disaster set in for the Blue Devils. After again stopping Whitewater, Stout's Tony Fitts (Fr, Kewaskum) fumbled the punt at the Stout 19 and it was picked up by the Warhawks' Trey Bell who carried it to the 11. Three plays later, Whitewater's Chad Wurth scored from one-yard out for a 14-3 Whitewater lead with 3:21 left in the first quarter.

Stout had an opportunity go awry midway through the second quarter when Bell picked off a deflected Ohman pass at the Whitewater 3. Stout had another chance to score following a rare Whitewater turnover, a fumble recovered by Jake Rider (Sr, Shiocton) at the Whitewater 46. Stout drove to within field goal range, but the attempt went wide left.

The Blue Devils controlled the stat sheet, but the game was played on the artificial surface of Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

Stout collected 30 first downs to Whitewater's eight. The Blue Devils tallied 519 total yards to Whitewater's 271. But the key stat turned out to be turnovers where Stout committed five to Whitewater's one.

Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaeuser) led Stout's running game with 119 yards as the Blue Devils piled up 318 rushing yards. Ohman completed 21-of-36 passes for 318 yards, but had the two interceptions. Austin hauled in seven passes for 129 yards and two TDs.

On Whitewater's side of the sheet, Kyle Mayhugh had 75 of Whitewater's 151 rushing yards, and Askren was 6-for-16 for 120 yards. Lesczynski had two catches for 98 yards.

Stout will host UW-River Falls, Saturday, Oct. 25.

BLUE DEVILS SHUT OUT PLATTEVILLE, 5-0

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout allowed only one shot on the entire evening as the Blue Devils had little problem with UW-Platteville, recording a 5-0 homecoming win, Friday, Oct. 17 at Nelson Field.

As the Pioneers (2-14, 1-6) bunkered down into a defensive stance, it took a while for the Blue Devils (10-5, 4-3 WIAC) to pierce the net, but once they did, they did it consistently.

Krista Hight (Jr, Brookfield) got things going, taking a pass from Diane Ehlen (Sr, Bloomington, Minn) in the 32nd minute.

Shannon Hermes (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) scored 11 minutes later when she received a pass from Carrie Schrank (Jr, Reedsburg) in the 43rd minute. Schrank, the NCAA Division III assists leader, added to her totals when she redirected a pass from Kate Rindahl (Fr, Cambridge) to Tina Dora (Fr, Kenosha) 14 minutes into the second half.

The Blue Devils' Sarah Geiger (Sr, West Bend) scored her third goal of the season, this time on a penalty kick in the 76th minute. Tanya Gegare (So, Kimberly) also picked up her third goal of the season, on an assist from Heidi Schultz (So, River Falls).

The Blue Devils dominated the field, outshooting the Pioneers 30-1. The Blue Devils put 23 shots on goal. The 10 wins ties a team record for most wins in a season.

Stout will be at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Oct. 22 to wrap up the conference season.

BLUE DEVILS TRIP UP EAU CLAIRE, SCHRANK SNAPS RECORD

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout's Carrie Schrank (Jr, Reedsburg) couldn't have picked a better time to break a school record.

Schrank's two assists were key in getting the Blue Devils past UW-Eau Claire, 2-1, Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Nelson Field.

Both of Schrank's assists - the first broke the school all-time assists record - came off corner kicks.

Following a scoreless first half, the Blugolds (7-8-1, 2-3 WIAC) took a lead in the 64th minute when Marcia Foltz scored unassisted.

It didn't take long for the Blue Devils (9-5, 3-3) to answer back. Schrank slammed the corner kick into the mob in front of the goal, and Krista Hight (Jr, Brookfield) put her left foot on the ball, driving it into the goal.

Eight minutes later it was more of the same as Schrank fired a corner kick in front of the net and found Diane Ehlen (Sr, Bloomington, Minn), who rocketed the ball into the goal as she fell back. The win marked Stout's first-ever win over Eau Claire. The teams tied, 0-0, last season.

Eau Claire outshot Stout, 16-11. Stout's Melissa Ballweg (Jr, Merrimac) recorded eight saves, while the Blugolds' Megan Brady had four saves.

Schrank now has 17 assists on the year and 27 for her career, breaking the record of 25 set by Becky Howard.

BLUE DEVILS COME OUT OF FUNK TO TAKE PLATTEVILLE, 3-1

PLATTEVILLE
- Lindsay Mensink (Jr, Ostrander, Minn) and Tanille Zenner (So, Athens) played their second straight strong performance to snap UW-Stout out of a haze as they downed UW-Platteville, 25-30, 30-25, 30-26, 30-22, Saturday, Oct. 18 in Platteville.

Zenner pounded out a match-high 20 kills - tops for her for the year - and also recorded a solo block and three assisted blocks. Mensink and Zenner both had 14 kills the previous night in a 3-0 loss at La Crosse. Mensink recorded 10 kills, a solo block and four assisted blocks. UW-Stout's Gretchen Schroer (Sr, Eau Claire) had 12 kills.

Neither team hit particularly well, as Stout (14-11, 2-5 WIAC) had 28 hitting errors, with a hitting percentage of .152. The Pioneers (15-10, 2-5) had 26 errors and hit at a .134 clip.

Stout will be at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Oct. 22, then will host their own tournament, Oct. 24-25.

BLUE DEVILS BOW OUT AT LA CROSSE

LA CROSSE
- Lindsay Mensink (Jr, Ostrander, Minn) and Tanille Zenner (So, Athens) each had 14 kills, but it wouldn't be enough as UW-Stout was stopped in three games by UW-La Crosse, Friday, Oct. 17 at La Crosse.

Stout, which earlier in the season beat the Eagles in five games, could not find their own game tonight, bowing out, 30-21, 30-27, 30-24.

The Eagles' (21-3, 7-0) Elissa Hansen had a match-high 18 kills, while Rachel Ask had 11 kills. The Eagles clinched at least a tie for the conference crown with the win.

Stout (13-11, 1-5) got three block assists from Mensink, and Zenner added a solo block and three assisted blocks.

October 15, 2003

BLUE DEVILS FLOUNDER IN OUTSIDE GAMES, FALL 3-1

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout played a solid two middle games, but played poorly in the first and fourth games as Stout was toppled by UW-Eau Claire, 30-19, 28-30, 30-27, 30-14, Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

In the opening game, Stout found themselves down by as much as 23-9, before battling back, but the deficit was too much.

The Blue Devils (13-10, 1-4 WIAC) came to life in the second game win, and showed spunk in the third game, before too many hitting errors spelled out their doom in the fourth contest.

Stout got 12 kills from both Tanille Zenner (So, Athens) and Gretchen Schroer (Sr, Eau Claire), and 10 from Lindsay Mensink (Jr, Ostrander, Minn). Jenny McDermid (Fr, Oconto Falls) had a decent night at the defensive met, teaming up for four block assists. Zenner had three solo and three assisted blocks. Schroer finished with three solo blocks.

Stout could not match Eau Claire's (15-6, 3-2) one-two punch of Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt and Molly Menard. The pair collected 16 and 15 kills, respectively, and Wozniak-Schmidt added eight block assists, teaming with Jessica Groh for half of those.
