WHITEWATER COMES WITH INTENT TO WRECK STOUT HOMECOMING

UW-Whitewater Warhawks (4-1, 2-0 WIAC) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1)
Saturday, Oct. 18, 1 p.m.
Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Menomonie, Wis.

ON THE LINE:
It might be early in the season, but every game is important in the wacky Wisconsin Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference (WIAC) where everybody has a chance at the conference title. The Warhawks are not unfamiliar with league championships, and the Blue Devils will look to knock them out of first place. Whitewater is currently tied for first with UW-Eau Claire, while Stout is tied for third with UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville.

LAST TIME OUT
: Stout: The Blue Devils jumped all over Stevens Point early, running off to a 37-7 lead early in the third quarter, then hung on for the 37-27 win. Stout got TDs from five different players as they racked up 361 total yards, 238 passing, 123 through the air. Luke Bundgaard gained 176 yards on 38 carries to lead the attack. The Blue Devil defense held Stevens Point to 37 total yards midway through the second quarter. The Pointers finished with 332 total yards, 63 on the ground, 269 in the air as they played catch-up.

Whitewater: The Warhawks had a tussle all afternoon with winless UW-River Falls, before downing the Falcons, 32-28. The Warhawks needed a 60-yard TD pass from Mike Askren, filling in for the injured Reggie Stauss, to Sean Erner to pull to within 28-26. Whitewater got the game winner after stopping River Falls at midfield, then going 48-yards in six plays, capped off by Keiya Square's 2-yard scamper with 21 seconds left. Whitewater had 346 total yards, 153 by rush, 193 by pass, while River Falls had 378 total yards, 363 by running.

LAST SEASON: Stout and Whitewater are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 7-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third with Stevens Point and Whitewater) in the WIAC. Whitewater was 5-5 overall, 4-3 (tied for third) in the WIAC.

THE SERIES: Whitewater leads the series, 33-10-2, that dates back to 1928. Stout defeated the Warhawks in 2000 and 2001, but dropped last year's game, 24-21. Even though Stout managed 24 first downs to Whitewater's nine, the Warhawks proved more opportunistic and keyed the game with a third quarter blocked field goal that was returned 66 yards for a TD by Joe Mabry. Whitewater scored 17 points in the first quarter, but Stout answered back with 14 in the second. Stout tallied a score late in the fourth, but could not get the ball back, falling into a tie for second place with one game remaining.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(About UW-Stevens Point game) That first half was about as a good a half on the road that I have seen us play in a long time. It was their homecoming and they are a highly skilled team. Our offensive line took over up front. This was the first time our offense and defense were able to feed off each other. Some of our guys stepped up and made some big plays.

"It's great to be back home. Life on the road in the WIAC is rough. Now, with Whitewater, we are right back in the big game mode. I am glad we are a factor again in the conference race. Whitewater will always be able to move the football and their defense is very active. This is a program we have always tried to emulate and catch up to. They are one of the big dogs in the league. Whitewater has the ability to mix it up, and we have got to find a way to stop Chad Wurth. On our turf, he will be fast as lightning."

BLUE DEVILS HANG ON TO DOWN UW-STEVENS POINT, 37-27

STEVENS POINT
- UW-Stout pretty much controlled the first 42 minutes of the game, then had to check a strong UW-Stevens Point comeback as the Blue Devils defeated the Pointers, 37-27, Saturday, Oct. 11 at Goerke Field in Stevens Point.

The Blue Devils (3-2, 1-1 WIAC) held the Pointers to 37 total yards through the midway point of the second half and took a 31-7 halftime lead. Stout added a TD early in the third quarter to take a 37-7 lead before the Pointers (3-2, 0-2) stormed back with 21 unanswered points to end the game.

After an uninspired offensive performance last week in a 15-7 loss at UW-Oshkosh, the Stout offensive unit tallied 361 total yards, 238 on the ground, of which Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaueser) accounted for 176 yards - 116 in the first half, 77 in the first quarter. Quarterback Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) picked up 62 yards rushing and threw for three TDs.

The Pointers' Scott Krause completed 25 passes for 269 yards and the final three TDs of the game as Stevens Point accumulated 332 total yards, much of it coming in the second half.

Stout began piling up the points early in the game. After losing the first drive to an interception, the Blue Devils forced the Pointers three-and-out, then drove 54 yards in five plays for the first score, a 12-yard run by Bundgaard. Stout would go on to score on six of their first nine possessions.

The Blue Devils' Steve Anderson (Sr, Stanley) intercepted Krause on the next drive, drove to the Point 34, but came up short on downs. No need to worry. On the Pointers' first play in the drive, Tony Fitts (RsFr, Kewaskum) forced a fumble that was pounced on by Cory Brown (Jr, Milwaukee). Stout took advantage, driving 50 yards in six plays, capping the drive on a 12-yard pass from Ohman to tight end Ross Jones (Jr, Appleton) and it was off to the races.

Ohman completed a 30-yard scoring strike to Dan Austin (Jr, Clintonville) early in the second quarter to put Stout up, 21-0. Stout took advantage of another interception, this one coupled with a 28-yard return by Jordan Sinz (Jr, Edgar), and three plays later, Ohman ran in from the 20 for a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter.

Stevens Point got their only score in the first half minutes later when Jason VanderVelden ran in from the 1-yard line. Stout added to the lead with a 47-yard field goal by Evan Larsen (So, River Falls) to close out the half with a 31-7 Blue Devil lead.

Stout went right back to work in the third period. After stopping the Pointers deep in their own territory, a punt return by Fitts gave Stout the ball on the Pointer 47. Bundgaard ran three time for 18 yards before Ohman found Adam Moiles (Sr, High Rolls, New Mexico) for a 25-yard scoring pass play.

The Pointers cut the lead to 37-14 with 1:04 left in the third period on a 27-yard pass play from Krause to Tony Romano. Krause hit Levi Massey with a 23-yard scoring play with 6:58 remaining, and Kurt Kielblock on a 7-yard scoring connection with 3:46 left. The Blue Devils recovered the onside kick and ran the clock down to one-second remaining before turning the ball over on downs. A last ditch toss by Krause fell incomplete.

Stout sacked Krause six times, with Luke Rykal (Jr, Cadott) and Nate Balkowitsch (Sr, Rosemount, Minn) each getting two sacks. Kevin Dewey (Sr, Burnsville, Minn) and Joe Kersten (Sr, Menasha) had a sack apiece.

Stout and Stevens Point were picked in a preseason poll to finish first and second, respectively, but both lost last week in their conference openers, Stout to Oshkosh, Stevens Point to UW-La Crosse. Stout fell to 25th in last week's D3football.com poll, while the Pointers slipped to ninth.

Stout hosts UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. in Don & Nona Williams Stadium in the annual homecoming contest.

BLUE DEVIL MAKES FIRST START FOR TENNESSEE TITANS

NASHVILLE, Tenn
- Former UW-Stout cornerback Tony Beckham made his first start last week for the NFL's Tennessee Titans as the Titans defeated the Houston Texans, Sunday, Oct. 12, 38-17.

Beckham has played in all six of the Titans' games this season and replaced right cornerback Samari Rolle, who is out three to six weeks due to a dislocated left elbow.

Beckham has seven tackles to his credit this season, six of them solo. He also has one fumble recovery. Beckham played in 14 of the Titans' 16 games last season, where he had six solo tackles and two assisted tackles. Beckham was drafted by the Titans in fourth round of the 2002 draft.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.
- UW-Stout controlled the second half, but could not overcome a first half goal by Augsburg, and went down to defeat, 1-0, Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

SUPERIOR
- The last time UW-Stout faced UW-Superior was during the breakfast game of the UW-Eau Claire Invitational and the Yellowjackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Stout came back to take the last three games and match. Blue Devil coach Jill Jolliff wondered out loud if her team was awake.
