UW-STOUT LOOKS TO REBOUND BY TRAVELING TO POINT

UW-Stout Blue Devils (2-2, 0-1 WIAC) at UW-Stevens Point Pointers (3-1, 0-1)
Saturday, Oct. 11, 1 p.m.
Goerke Field, Stevens Point, Wis.

ON THE LINE: Stout needs to regain their footing, and they have a tough draw to try to find it as the Blue Devils travel to UW-Stevens Point in a match-up of nationally ranked teams. With their 15-7 loss to UW-Oshkosh last week, Stout plummeted in the polls, falling to 25th in the latest D3football.com Top 25 poll and 31st in the Don Hansen Weekly Gazette. The Pointers are ninth in the D3football.com poll and 17th in Don Hansen following a 24-21 loss at UW-La Crosse.

LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils could not get their offense untracked, but the defense kept UW-Oshkosh out of the end zone until midway through the fourth quarter. Stout finally got on the board with a minute left, but Oshkosh recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock. Oshkosh rushed 60 times for 260 yards, tallying 386 total yards. Stout finished with 237 total yards, 126 on the ground.

Stevens Point: The Pointers jumped out to a 14-0 lead over UW-La Crosse, and led 21-17 in the fourth quarter, but lost, 24-21, to the Eagles. It was a tale of two halves, as the Pointers controlled the first half, but the Eagles took over in the second. La Crosse scored the winning TD with 4:17 remaining in the game. The Eagles finished with 365 total yards, the Pointers 319. Quarterback Scott Krause was 25-for-46 for 239 yards and two TDs.

LAST SEASON: Stout and Stevens Point are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 7-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third with Stevens Point and Whitewater) in the WIAC. Stevens Point was 6-4 overall, 4-3 (tied for third) in the WIAC.

THE SERIES: Stevens Point leads the series, 41-15-2, that dates back to 1913. Over the last four meetings, each team has won on their own home turf, with the Blue Devils taking a dominating 37-13 win last season at Williams Stadium. Stout's Nick Ohman threw for two TDs, ran for two more, rushed for a game-high 125 yards and completed 21-of-31 passes for 220 in last year's win. The Pointers scored first, but Stout took a 23-13 lead into halftime. Ryan Englebert added a 48-yard score in the third and Ohman connected with Matt Schaeuble in the fourth. Stout piled up 504 yards, Stevens Point had 298 total yards, 234 in the air by Scott Krause.

MEDICAL UPDATE: Running back Ryan Englebert and wide receiver Matt Sprester were injured in a car accident, Oct. 1, near Amery, and were taken to a Minneapolis, Minn., hospital. Sprester suffered foot and ankle ligament and tendon damage, which required surgery. Englebert suffered a hip injury, but did not require surgery. Both were scheduled to be released from the hospital, Monday, Oct. 6. Luke Bundgaard wore Englebert's number during the Oshkosh game and Dan Austin wore Sprester's number.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(About UW-Oshkosh game) We could not finish any drives. We did not force the ball upfield and our receivers had some bad drops that cost us. I was happy with the job our defense did - we kept them off the scoreboard. There were 10 consecutive drives that the score was 6-0. We are way too preoccupied with the (amount of) rushing yards (allowed). This game is about points, not yardage. Oshkosh played the type of game they had to play to win. With Oshkosh playing their fourth consecutive home game, along with a week of rest, then we have the accident (to Ryan Englebert and Matt Sprester), and then we take on a dangerous team, I was amazed we could hang in there.

"Stevens Point brings a completely different mindset compared to us. (Scott) Krause is the best quarterback in the league. They look like they are trying to score on every play. If we don't throw and catch the ball, we will be in for a long day. Our staff needs to make more adjustments, take some of the responsibility off the quarterback."

BLUE DEVILS TRIPPED UP BY TITANS, 15-7

OSHKOSH - After an emotional week that saw two UW-Stout regulars hospitalized following an auto accident and after a 51-3 blowout over St. Thomas a week earlier that had Blue Devil head coach Ed Meierkort saying the lopsided score didn't give Stout a chance to work their complete offense, a last gasp comeback by the Blue Devils fell just short as Stout lost, 15-7, at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 4.

Trailing the entire game and 15-0 very late in the game, the Blue Devils (2-2, 0-1 WIAC) engineered a drive that was capped off on a 71-yard, 13-play drive by a 10-yard run by quarterback Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) with 1-minute, 48-seconds left in the game. The Titans (4-0, 1-0 WIAC) recovered the kick and ran the clock out.

Stout was never able to get their offense untracked throughout the game - an offense that was sent out of balance due to the accident injuries suffered by tailback Ryan Englebert (So, Sturgeon Bay) and wide receiver Matt Sprester (Sr, Clear Lake) Oct. 1 - as they suffered from poor field position all afternoon and racked up a total of 237 yards, 126 rushing, 111 passing.

The Titans, by contrast, tore up Stout's top-rated rushing defense as they pounded the ball 60 times for 240 yards, keyed by 35 carries by horse Andrew Stern for a total of 120 yards. Oshkosh had 386 total yards, 146 yards passing.

Stout's defense kept the Titans out of the end zone most of the day, allowing only one TD, that a 5-yard run by Stern with 7:09 left in the game. The Titans scored two first half field goals, and Mike Kinateder added another late in the game on the drive before Stout drove for their only score.

Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaeuser) finished with 87 yards on 18 carries for Stout. The Blue Devils fumbled away two opportunities. Stout punted the ball away 10 times, but the Blue Devil offense forced Oshkosh to punt the ball nine times. Oshkosh held a 16 minute advantage in time of possession.

"We lost a game we could have won if we had just scored early," said coach Ed Meierkort.

With Oshkosh utilizing the running game, Blue Devil middle linebackers Travis Phillips (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) and Chuck Vander Linden (Sr, Golden Valley, Minn) had busy days. Phillips had nine solo tackles and five assisted tackles, while Vander Linden had eight solo and two assisted tackles.

Oshkosh also had an emotional week, but seemed to overcome it. Earlier in the week, the Titans heard from the NCAA that they had been forced to forfeit their wins from last season due to an ineligible player.

Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 11.

ENGLEBERT, SPRESTER INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENT NEAR AMERY

AMERY
- UW-Stout football players Matt Sprester (Sr, Clear Lake) and Ryan Englebert (So, Sturgeon Bay) were involved in a car accident near Clear Lake, Wednesday, Oct. 1, and are both listed in stable condition at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Neither injury is considered life threatening.

Sprester suffered an ankle injury which will require surgery, and Englebert suffered a hip injury which will also require surgery.

The pair were going to dinner at Sprester's parents' home and were struck by a vehicle about a mile from the home around 9 p.m. They were taken to the Amery Regional Medical Center, and later transported to Hennepin County.

Both players transferred to Stout last season. Sprester, a business major, transferred from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and Englebert, a business major, transferred from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Sprester is listed as a starter at wide receiver and Englebert splits the tailback duties evenly with Luke Bundgaard. Sprester is the Blue Devils' leading receiver with 12 catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns. Englebert has carried the ball 52 times for 336 yards and two touchdowns.

The Titans' got the game-winner at 51-minutes, 35-seconds when Karin Reinke scored.

The Blue Devils (7-4, 2-3 WIAC) hunkered down in the first half playing a defensive game, but came more to life offensively in the second half.

Stout had a couple of chances to score late in the game, once when Carrie Schrank's (Jr, Reedsburg) shot was tipped up over the cross bar, and a second time when Kristy Symons (So, Reedsburg) had a seemingly wide open shot but got tangled up with the game official.

BLUE DEVILS EDGED BY POINTERS IN FINAL 20 MINUTES, 1-0

MENOMONIE
- Coaches will not concede a moral victory, by UW-Stout got as close to one as they could and in the process may have earned respect around the league. UW-Stevens Point scored in the 72nd minute to tip the Blue Devils, 1-0, in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest, Tuesday, Sept. 30.

The Pointers, who have yet to ever lose a conference game, kept the ball in the Blue Devils' zone for more than 75 percent of the night, but the Stout defense constantly repelled them. Stout goalkeeper Melissa Ballweg (Jr, Merrimac) turned away 11 shots on the night - nine in the second half. Stout's defense also blocked several shots inside the box and forced the Pointers into bad shots.

The Pointers (7-2, 1, 4-0 WIAC) got the only goal of the game when Megan Frey took a pass from Andrea Oswald in front of the goal for the only score at 72:10.

Stout (7-3, 2-2) got only one shot on goal, and that came early in the first half. Stout penetrated the Pointer defense a couple of times late in the game, but could not get off a good shot.

The one point loss is the closest Stout has ever gotten to tripping up the Pointers, as Stevens Point has won all nine meetings. The closest score before tonight was 4-1 in 2001.

BLUE DEVIL TENNIS WINS NAILBITER OVER HAMLINE

MENOMONIE - It all came down to the final match and UW-Stout’s Nicole Hayek (Fr, Rochester, Minn) delivered the goods that gave the Blue Devils a 5-4 win over Hamline University, Monday, Sept. 29.

After the Blue Devils lost 2-of-3 doubles matches, the singles players bounced back to tie the team score by garnering three of the five singles matches, leaving the No. 1 match on-going.

Hayek defeated the Pipers’ Kristen Bothun, 6-2, in the first set, but Bothun turned the tables by an identical score in the second set. Hayek battled her way to a 10-8 final set win to give Stout their second win of the season.

Tina Rodin (Jr, Champlin, Minn) and Abby Zander (Fr, Shawano) took Stout’s only doubles win, storming to an easy 8-2 win at No. 3.

Both Rodin and Zander took singles wins - Rodin a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5, Zander a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6. Meghan Fieber (Jr, Menomonie) had Stout’s other win, a 6-2, 6-1 saunter at No. 3.
