STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: ""We were not able to emulate their (Hardin-Simmons) speed in practice, but once we caught up to their speed, that allowed us to take advantage of our size. This was a big win for us. Anytime you can beat a team that is in the national limelight year in and year out, it is good for your program. "Augustana is a team that likes to throw, but are not afraid to run. They are a big, physical team that plays in the top Division II league in the country. We must improve all over the ball. We must improve our throwing game. We must refine it, we need to be more consistent. It is exciting to be playing a big-time Division II program and it's exciting for me because I will be playing against great friends who are running a great program." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; All games be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com September 13, 2003BLUE DEVILS COME BACK TO DUMP HARDIN-SIMMONS IN OPENER MENOMONIE - After spotting Hardin-Simmons University a 14-0 lead, UW-Stout came roaring back to hand the Cowboys from Abilene, Texas, a 31-21 defeat, Saturday, Sept. 13 in the season opener for both nationally-ranked teams at Don & Nona Williams Stadium. The Blue Devils looked lackluster over the first 20 minutes of the game, giving up a 12 yard run by Lance Moore with 1:52 left in the first quarter and a 46-yard TD pass from Jordan Neal to Triandos Sheppard with four minutes off the second quarter clock. The luster began to return for Stout's highly touted offense midway through the second quarter. Matt Sprester's (Sr, Clear Lake) 42-yard reception keyed a 72 yard drive that was capped off when quarterback Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) found Dan Austin (Jr, Clintonville) for a 6-yard TD pass. Penalties hurt the Cowboys all day - they finished with 79 yards of fouls - and Stout made them pay before halftime when a third down pass interference call gave Stout new life at the HSU two-yard line. Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaeuser) bulled over for the score. A Cowboy's personal foul on the ensuing kickoff was assessed on the second half kickoff and Stout started their drive at the 42 yard line. The Blue Devils kept the ball on the ground for 11 of their 13-play, 58-yard drive with Bundgaard and Ryan Englebert (So, Sturgeon Bay) getting most of the work. But it was the pass that put Stout into the lead when Ohman found Austin again, this time for an 8-yard score, to give Stout the 21-14 lead at 8:14 in the third quarter. After moving the ball to the Cowboys' 20, another personal foul gave Stout the ball on the 11 and Evan Larson (So, River Falls) booted a 24-yard field goal for a 24-14 lead. Stout's Jordan Sinz (Jr, Edgar), who earlier in the game had an interception, forced a fumble, recovered by Chuck VanderLinden (Sr, Golden Valley, Minn) at the Stout 29. With the exception of one incomplete pass, Stout again went to the ground, moving the ball to the Hardin-Simmons' 42. Ohman connected with a wide open Sprester down the middle of the field with Sprester finding paydirt with 9:19 left in the game. Hardin-Simmons added a score late in the game. Stout recovered the onside kick and ran the clock out. The Blue Devil defense held Hardin-Simmons to 62 yards rushing, but the Cowboys racked up 273 yards in the air. Quarterback Jordan Neal was 26-for-31 with an interception. Sherrard hauled in five catches for 89 yards and Shay Ratliff had eight grabs for 81 yards. The Blue Devils piled up 439 yards of offense, most of it coming after the midway point of the second quarter. Ohman was 14-for-25 for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Sprester had five catches for 120 yards and a score, while Austin had three short catches for 20 yards, but scored twice. Six other players caught a pass. Englebert and Bundgaard each nearly had 100 yards rushing.. Englebert finished with 99 yards and Bundgaard had 91. Both carried the ball 20 times. Stout finished the game with 237 yards rushing. Bundgaard's touchdown moved him closer to becoming the Blue Devils all-time leading scorer. Bundgaard currently has 174 points. Hall of Fame member Scott Fredrickson has 178 points. Stout will travel to NCAA Division II Augustana, S.D., Saturday, Sept. 13. The Vikings defeated Southwest Minnesota State, 40-13.
