March 24, 2004BLUE DEVILS SPLIT WITH AUGSBURG DOUBLEHEADERMINNEAPOLIS, Minn - Augsburg College broke a six game losing streak in a a four-hit shutout for the Auggies in the first game, but UW-Stout's Kaela Wold (Jr, Altoona) went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in for Stout in the second game, as the teams split a non-conference women's softball doubleheader on Wednesday, March 24, at the Edor Nelson Field indoor air structure in Minneapolis, Minn. Augsburg (2-8) won the first game 3-0, while Stout (11-5) won the second game 10-2 in a game shortened to six innings as a result of the NCAA eight-run rule. Augsburg was held to only four hits in the game, but manufactured its three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Audra Thimmesch-Gill opened the inning by reaching base on catcher's interference, then came around to score on singles by Kristen Lideen and Becky Ruckel. Lideen scored on an RBI groundout by Lisa Uehling and pinch-runner Melynda Kleewein scored on an RBI groundout by Melissa Lee. Ruckel had a double in the first game for the Auggies, while Kim Caswell (Sr, Stanley) had a double for the Blue Devils. Megan Donley (So, Fridley, Minn) struck out three in a losing pitching effort for the Blue Devils. Trailing 2-0 after one inning, Stout jumped on the board in a big way in the second game, scoring four runs in the second inning and three more in the third to turn a close game into a rout. Courtney Zafft (So, Rochester, Minn) and Erin O'Connell (Jr, Altoona) scored on throwing errors, and Wold hit a two-run single to bring home Angie Kliber (So, Swanville, Minn) and Justine Lehmann (Fr, Luck) in the second inning. In the third, O'Connell hit a two-run home run to right field, the first round-tripper of the year for last year's NCAA home run leader, and Caswell hit a run-scoring single. The Blue Devils added another run in the fourth, on an RBI double by Zafft, and added two more runs in the sixth, on a run-scoring double by Wold and a throwing error. In addition to Wold's 4-for-4 effort, Zafft went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. O'Connell also scored two runs. Emily Zahn (So, Champlin, Minn) started for Stout, but lasted just two-thirds of an inning, loading the bases and allowing two Augsburg runs, on an infield single by Uehling and on Lee's successful steal of home. Donley returned to the pitching circle for the Blue Devils and pitched the rest of the way, earning the win while striking out three and allowing just four hits. Stout is off this weekend, but is scheduled to host St. Scholastica, Wednesday, March 31 at 3 p.m., if field conditions permit. Stout will be at the Augustana Tournament, April 2-3./Story by Augsburg Sports Information March 23, 2004KAELA WOLD NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Kaela Wold (Jr, Eau Claire/Altoona) got her season off to a good start in a new position as she moved from the outfield to shortstop in leading Stout to one of their best starts in school history (10-4). With the Iowa skies dark and the winds whipping up to 35 mile per hour gusts, the Blue Devils (0-7) tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Dustin VanderVorst (Fr, River Falls) smacked a two-out single, then stole second. Fellow freshman Luke Schultz (Menomonie) drove VanderVorst home with a single of his own. March 24, 2004MEN'S BASKETBALL ANNOUNCES FIRST ROUND OF COMMITMENTSMENOMONIE - UW-Stout added more athleticism, size, and outstanding defenders to their full court press attack that led the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in defensive field goal percentage and blocked shots. Ryan Stangl, a 5-foot, 10-inch guard from Spring Valley, Anthony Stotts, a 6-5 forward from Augusta, and Jesse Piehl, a 7-0 post player from Tripoli High School in Iowa will play for the Blue Devils beginning next season, UW-Stout coach Ed Andrist said in announcing his first of several recruits this season. Stangl is known as a great defender who brings along an unselfish and complete game. A four year starter for the Cardinals, Stangl averaged 19.5 points, five rebounds, and 3.5 steals per game. Stangl has led Spring Valley team to two Wisconsin state tournament appearances while scoring 1,184 career points. Stangl has been an all-Dunn-St. Croix, first team selection his junior and senior year. Stangl was also tagged as an all-state honorable mention player and was recently selected to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division III North All-Star Team. Stangl also comes to Stout as a highly decorated football and baseball player. "Ryan Stangl is the kind of player that can come in this fall and step right into the Blue Devil system," Andrist said. "He is one of the most intelligent players I have seen this season and, as a guard that will handle the ball for us, his court savvy will be extremely important. Ryan has done nothing but win his entire athletic career and with him in a Blue Devil uniform, we know that will continue here." Stotts is a fresh bundle of athleticism from Augusta High School . Stotts is a Western Cloverbelt first team all conference selection who averaged 18 points per game while shooting more than 50 percent from the field. Stotts averaged 14.5 rebounds per game and accumulated three steals and three blocks per game for the Beavers. Stotts is currently listed as an alternate on the Division IV North All-Star team. "Anthony Stotts is a player that will keep getting better as the competition level is raised," Andrist said. "Anthony has much to learn, but has the desire and athleticism to advance quickly. Anthony is a great leaper, and incredibly quick at getting to the basket offensively. He will fit very nicely in the Blue Devil system." Andrist knows seven-times-three will be the tallest front line in the WIAC and possibly all of NCAA Division III basketball next season. In addition to John and Jake Nonemacher, (7-0 twins) Andrist has added a third seven footer in Piehl. Stout led the league in blocked shots last season, and Piehl will no doubt add to that number. Piehl finished second in Iowa with an average of six blocks per game. An Iowa Star Conference performer, Piehl claims a record 13 blocks in a single game. Piehl, along with his six bpg, averaged eight points and eight rebounds per contest while leading his team to a 16-6 overall record. Tripolis season came to an end losing to conference opponent Dunkerton, which claimed the Division 1A State Championship. "At 7-0 and a very good athlete, what more needs to be said about Jesse Piehl," Andrist said. "Jesse brings to the table great size and an incredible desire to learn. Under the tutelage of twin towers (the Nonemacher twins), Jesse will have the time and instruction to hone his skills. Already a great shot blocker, Jesse will become a great defender and learn to face the basket and score. Jesse absolutely has his best basketball ahead of him and we are extremely happy he is a member of the Blue Devil family." UW-Stout finished the 2003-04 season at 14-11 overall, 8-8 in the WIAC, good for a tie for fourth. Updated: March 29, 2004 |
