ON THE LINE: This is the opening of the 2003 season, and the match-up between Hardin-Simmons and UW-Stout marks one of the top games among NCAA Division III powers this season. Hall of Famer Scott Fredrickson (1986-89) is the all-time leading scorer with 178 points. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "We are anxious to play. An obvious disadvantage to coming in late is we get to see everyone else play, but once we tee it up on Saturday, we will be okay. Offensively, our running game is ahead of where we were last year at this time. Our passing game needs to get better. We will hang our hats on our seven senior offensive line and for (quarterback) Nick Ohman's ability to create. Defensively, we have been either hit or miss in practice. We are either playing very well or very poorly. We must get that squared around by Saturday. I will tell you what, we will play real hard. " We decided to host a very good team to open. Hardin-Simmons is a very confident team. One of their biggest worries seems to be how to spread the ball around. They feel that an 8-2 season (last year) was a down year. We will do what we can to keep it close." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; All games be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com The game will also be broadcast live over the Internet by d3football.com
September 5, 2003BLUE DEVILS HAVE LITTLE TROUBLE IN 9-0 WIN OVER SUPERIOR MENOMONIE - UW-Stout scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of the game and it was off to the races as the Blue Devils scored often in a 9-0 win over UW-Superior in the home and conference opener, Friday, Sept. 5 at Nelson Field. Heidi Schultz (So, River Falls) showed a good burst of speed as she picked up a ball at about midfield and raced down the entire sideline to put the ball home for Stout's (3-0, 1-0) first goal. Less than a minute later Chelsey Seawell (So, St. Anthony, Minn) scored her first collegiate goal after the Superior goalie dropped the ball on a shot by Carrie Schrank (Jr, Reedsburg). Tina Dora (Fr, Kenosha) scored with 24 minutes left in the half. The loneliest place on the field was in front of Stout's goal as Melissa Ballweg (Jr, Merrimac) and Katie Thompson (Fr, St. Francis, Minn) combined for the shutout. Thompson preserved the shutout in the second half when she stopped Superior's only real threat by deflecting it straight back over the goal. Stout outshot Superior, 19-4, and put 17 shots on goal.
