BLUE DEVILS HANG ON TO KNOCK OFF 10TH RANKED BLUGOLDS

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout did not score a field goal in the final 12 minutes of the game, but had built up a big enough lead to hold off UW-Eau Claire, 62-51, Saturday, Jan. 24 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (13-5, 6-3) held a 16-point, 40-24 halftime lead, taking advantage of 17 first half turnovers by the Blugolds (15-3, 7-2). Stout built the lead to as much as 19 points in the second, 53-34, when Laura Verdegan (Sr, Tony) made Stout's last shot from the floor at 12:12.

The Blugolds - in particular Becca Spaeth - took over from there, and went on a 17-9 run to close out the game. Spaeth scored eight of her 10 second half points in the final run.

Even though both teams shot poorly from the free throw line, it was the line that helped Stout secure the win. In those final 12 minutes, Eau Claire cut the lead to six, but Stout shot just well enough from the line. The Blue Devils hit 9-of-14 down the stretch.

It was the starters that made the difference in this game. Both team's benches accounted for only eight points apiece.

Verdegan scored 16 points, 13 in the first half to push Stout to the 16 point halftime lead. Verdegan also had four blocked shots. Sara Kahl (Sr, Menomonie) chipped in 16 points. Molly Hendricks (So, Blaine, Minn) added 13 points.

Spaeth was the only Blugold to score in double digits, finishing with a game-high 22 points. Spaeth finished with 12 rebounds, as did Brooke Wozniak-Schmidt.

Stout shot 34 percent from the field (20-of-59) and Eau Claire shot 32 percent (19-of-59). Shooting from the line wasn't much better. Stout hit 18-of-28 (64 percent) from the line, Eau Claire 9-of-18 (50 percent). Both team connected on four 3-point shots.

The win was Stout's sixth straight, and their fifth in league play.

The Blue Devils will be at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, Jan. 28, and at UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 31.

KAHL BREAKS 1000 CAREER POINTS, STOUT DOWNS FALCONS

MENOMONIE
- UW-Stout's Sara Kahl (Sr, Menomonie) scored her 1000th career point - and then some - as the Blue Devils took care of business and downed UW-River Falls, 73-52, Tuesday, Jan. 20 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Kahl needed 11 points coming into the game to reach the magical plateau. Kahl stayed in the game until she got the points in the first half, final breaking the mark with about six minutes remaining in the opening round, hitting a 3-pointer from the left side.

After scoring 14 points in the first half, Kahl went on to lead all scorers with 23 points.

The Blue Devils (12-5, 5-3) led by a tenuous six points at halftime, 38-32, but went on a 16-4 run to open the half and blow the game wide open.

Stout controlled the boards, getting numerous second and third shot chances by collecting 29 offensive rebounds. By contrast, Stout held the Falcons (11-6, 2-6) to only eight offensive boards and 36 rebounds total. Stout, led by Kahl's 11 caroms, pulled down 54 total rebounds.

Laura Verdegan (Sr, Tony) finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Stout held a huge advantage at the line, tossing in 23-of-33 free throw attempts.

The Blue Devil defense also caused havoc for River Falls, as the Falcons turned the ball over 33 times and Stout had 21 steals, with Kahl and Verdegan each getting four. Erin Churchill (Jr, Plum City) finished with five steals to go along with her nine points.

The Falcons got 14 points and 13 rebounds from Traci Reiman.

VANDENBERGHE HITS GAME WINNER AT BUZZER OVER EAU CLAIRE

MENOMONIE
- Jeff Vandenberghe (Sr, Coon Rapids, Minn) grabbed the offensive rebound and layed the ball in at the buzzer to give UW-Stout a 59-57 win over arch-rival UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Jan. 24 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The second half was very close, with eight tied scores and neither team holding more than a four-point lead in the final stanza. But nothing got the capacity crowd of 2700-plus out of their seats more than the final minute of the game.

With Stout (11-6, 5-4) holding a 56-55 lead, the Blugolds' Tyler Birkel stole the ball and the Blugolds worked the ball around. But Stout's Nate Templer (Sr, Beaver Dam) stole the ball on the baseline with 33 seconds remaining. Greg Chaisson (So, Minneapolis, Minn) was fouled, and made the second free throw to put Stout up, 57-55 with 14 seconds remaining.

The Blugolds (9-9, 3-6) tossed the ball nearly full court to Jesse Breidenbach who layed the ball in to tie at 57-57.

After a Stout timeout, the Blue Devils' Isaac Reece (Jr, Sterling, Kan) worked the ball around the perimeter, pulled up for the jumper and missed, but Vandenberghe was there to toss the ball down the strings for the win.

Vandenberghe finished the game with a game-high 23 points. Terry Farmer (Fr, Kenosha) came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down some key rebounds among his six.

The Blugolds, who were playing without starter Dan Archambault due to illness, were led by Casey Drake with 15. Tyler Birkel scored 12 points.

Stout will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m., then will go to UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 31.

RIVER FALLS KNOCKS OFF BLUE DEVILS IN SECOND HALF

MENOMONIE
- It was a game of inside versus outside in the first half as UW-Stout held a 37-31 halftime lead over UW-River Falls. But it was a different story in the second half as the Falcons' inside game far out-trumped the Blue Devils' perimeter game and River Falls went on to a 71-63 WIAC win at Johnson Fieldhouse, Wednesday, Jan. 21.

In the first stanza, the Blue Devils' Jeff Vandenberghe (Sr, Coon Rapids, Minn) kept pace with the Falcons' standout player Rich Melzer. Vandenberghe popped in four 3-pointers and tallied 16 points, while Melzer hit seven shots, all inside the arc, and most of them in the paint, to tally 17 first half points.

Vandenberghe was blanked in the second half and Melzer added 19 points to finish with a game high 36 points.

Billy Halter scored 12 points for the Falcons (11-5, 5-3). Nate Templer (Sr, Beaver Dam) added 16 points for Stout (10-6, 4-4) and Greg Chaisson (So, Minneapolis, Minn) chipped in 11 points.

BLUE DEVILS DOWN ST. SCHOLASTICA, 2-1

DULUTH, Minn
- Dan Riffe (Sr, Bryon, Ill) scored what would prove to be the game-winner in the second period as UW-Stout downed St. Scholastica, Saturday, Jan. 24 in Duluth, Minn.

Riffe scored with 6-minutes, 58-second off the second period clock, getting assists by Caleb Shanahan (Jr, Tulsa, Okla) and Todd Wynia (Fr, Minneapolis, Minn).

The Blue Devils (12-7, 3-5) won their second consecutive game after dropping four straight games.

Stout got on the board first, at the 11:43 mark in the first period, when Lewie Kellin (Sr, Cohasset, Minn) scored his first goal of the season. He was assisted by his brother Mitch Kellin (Sr, Cohasset, Minn) and Adam Boche (Fr, South St. Paul, Minn).

The Saints (5-11-3, 0-7-1) knotted the game four minutes into the second period on a goal by Josh Martalock. He was assisted by Derek Ciernia.

Stout outshot Scholastica, 32-24. The Blue Devils Jeff Dotson (Sr, Chanhassen, Minn) recorded 23 saves. His counterpart, Corey Wogtech had 30 saves.

NICHOLS SCORES GAME WINNER OVER SUPERIOR

MENOMONIE
- Derek Nichols (Sr, Victoria, Minn) scored the game winning goal with 3-minutes, 23-seconds left in the game as UW-Stout notched a 1-0 win over UW-Superior, Friday, Jan. 23.

After a scoreless 56-plus minutes, Nichols grabbed the puck, and shot with almost no angle at the net and put the puck high in the opposite corner of the net. The goal was Nichols' first of the season. BJ Garczynski (Fr, Sun Prairie) assisted on the play.

Blue Devil (11-7-0, 2-5-0 NCHA) goalie Jeff Dotson (Sr, Chanhassen, Minn) seems to always play the Yellowjackets (11-6-1, 4-3-0) tough and this game was no exception as he stopped all 48 shots Superior took. It was also Dotson's third shutout of the season.

The Yellowjackets' Mathieu Bonnelly recorded 25 saves.

The win snapped a Blue Devil four game losing streak. The game was virtually penalty free with Stout sitting in the box twice to Superior's three penalties.
