November 15, 2003BUNDGAARD SHATTERS RECORDS AS BLUE DEVILS DOWN PIONEERS MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Luke Bundgaard (Sr, Weyerhaueser) became the all-time leading rusher in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) history with a 53-carry, 328-yard performance in a 42-14 Stout win over UW-Platteville, Saturday, Nov. 15 at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.Bundgaard came into the game needing 275 yards to snap the conference mark of 4375 yards set by Darrell Sourhada of UW-Eau Claire from 1998-2001. Bundgaard had 158 yards by the end of the first half, then broke the mark early in the fourth quarter and finished his four-year career with 4427 total rushing yards. Along the way, Bundgaard broke or tied four of his own school records. Bundgaard scored four touchdowns, tying his own school record, and broke the following records: single season rushing record at 1461 yards (was 1366), single games carries record with 53, which was 45, and the single season carries record with 294, which was 270. Not to be left in the dust, fellow Blue Devil senior defensive back Steve Anderson (Stanley) took advantage of Senior Day to have a standout performance, intercepting three passes, of which two led to Stout touchdowns. Platteville (3-7, 1-6) drew first blood. After stopping Stout on downs, the Pioneers drove 66 yards in nine plays to score on a 1-yard run by Damian Droessler with 8:54 showing on the first quarter clock. It was all Blue Devils after that as Stout (6-4, 4-3) scored twice in the first quarter and three times in the second quarter to take a 35-14 halftime lead. Bundgaard scored from one-yard out on the next drive, as Stout took advantage of two Platteville pass interference penalties. Anderson's first interception at the Platteville 33 led to Stout's second score. Quarterback Nick Ohman (Jr, Glenwood City) capped off the drive with a 9-yard pass to Julio Vargas (Jr, Sturgeon Bay). After a Platteville three-and-out, the Blue Devils drove 71 yards in six plays, with Bundgaard gaining 59 yards, including the 13-yard TD score. Platteville scored on their next drive as Brent Nelson passed for all 65 yards, capping the drive with a 16 yard pass to Derek Hoff. Stout answered back on their drive with a 75-yard, 14-play drive. Ohman completed three key passes in the drive, a 7-yard third down pass to fullback Sam Weber (Fr, Waverly, Minn), a 22-yard third down pass to Seth Mattison (Jr, Byron, Minn) to the Platteville 22 and a 12-yard pass to Vargas on the next play to the Platteville 6. Bundgaard accounted for the rest of the yardage, and cashed in with a 1-yard scoring run at 3:43 for a 28-14 lead. Anderson intercepted Nelson on the next drive, returning the ball to the Stout 34. Ohman connected again to Vargas, this time for 43 yards to the Platteville 23. Bundgaard carried for eight yards, and Ohman found Mattison in the end zone for a 15-yard passing TD with eight seconds left in the half. Stout scored their final TD in the fourth, again taking advantage of an interception, this time by Jordan Sinz (Jr, Edgar), who returned the ball 30 yards to Stout 39. Bundgaard carried 6-of-7 times on the drive and scored from seven yards out with 13:28 left in the game to close out the scoring. Platteville threatened midway through the quarter, but Anderson squashed the threat when he intercepted on the Platteville goal line, and carried the ball to the 2. The Blue Devils racked up 645 total yards of offense - a new school single game record - getting 358 yards on the ground, to 287 in the air. Ohman completed 16-of-27 passes for 259 yards with two TD passes. Vargas hauled in four catches for 78 yards. Mattison had three catches for 56 yards and Matt Schaeuble (Jr, Wrightstown) three catches for 44 yards. The Pioneers were held to 267 total yards, 256 coming in the air as Nelson completed 17-of-39 passes for all of the yardage. Matt Kent had five catches for 113 yards and Max Seroogy had three catches for 53 yards. November 11, 2003LUKE RYKAL NAMED WIAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE - UW-Stout linebacker Luke Rykal (Jr, Cadott) was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defensive player of the week for his efforts in the Blue Devils' 43-36 win over UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Nov. 8 at Carson Park.Rykal gave Stout the lead back in a wild fourth quarter when he returned an interception 19 yards for a score with 2:27 left in the game. Rykal recovered a fumble in the second quarter, broke up one pass and had three solo tackles. Rykal also returned a kickoff back 21 yards to set up Stout's game winning drive late in the fourth quarter.
November 12, 2003TWO BLUE DEVILS NAMED TO ALL-WIAC VOLLEYBALL SQUAD MENOMONIE - UW-Stout top two leaders in kills were named to the 2003 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) volleyball team.Outside hitter Gretchen Schroer (Sr, Eau Claire) was named to the first team and middle hitter Tanille Zenner (So, Athens) was an honorable mention choice. Schroer led the Blue Devils in kills with 433, averaging 3.23 kills per game, and ranked ninth in the WIAC. Schroer recorded double digit kills in 25 of 35 matches, with a high of 19 kills against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 24 in a three game match. Schroer played in 134 of 135 games, the most of any of the Stout players. Schroer was named the WIAC player of the week, Nov. 4, after being named to the all-tournament team at UW-River Falls. Schroer was also named to the UW-Stout all-tournament team. Schroer is a vocational rehabilitation major with a 3.83 grade point average. Zenner played much of the season injured, but still collected 361 kills for a 2.96 kills per game average. She led the team in hitting percentage (.269) and ranked in the top 10 in the WIAC in the category. Zenner, who holds the school record for most block assists in a season (107), finished this season with 95 block assists. Zenner, a graphic communications major with a 3.55 GPA, was the 2002 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) freshman of the year and a third team All-American. Stout finished the season at 22-13 overall.

St. Mary's (1-1-1) scored only two minutes into the game on a Mike Bry power play goal. The Cardinals added three goals in the next 12 minutes before Stout (3-2-0) got on the board with 4-minutes, 50-seconds remaining in the period when Mitch Kellin (Sr, Cohasset, Minn) scored unassisted. November 17, 2003BLUE DEVILS RETURN LARGE PORTION OF LINE-UP MENOMONIE - A little tweak here, a little tweak there, combined with a strong group of returners who have seen a great deal of success key the UW-Stout women's basketball team for yet another run at the top conference spot.Stout, which averaged a conference high 79.5 points, returns seniors Laura Verdegan (Tony), Sara Kahl (Menomonie), Jesse Herrman (Barron) and Bonnie Thoe (Hayfield, Minn), along with juniors Erin Churchill (Plum City), Lindsey Erichsen (Spring Valley, Minn), Jenny Philipsky (Jr, Lomira) and Jackie Ellsworth (Hayward) and sophomores Steffanie Nemitz (Bloomington) and Molly Hendricks (Blaine, Minn) to lead the Blue Devils fast paced attack. The Blue Devils have been picked to finish fourth in a preseason Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) poll. Verdegan, a first team all-conference and all-defensive pick who is also a track All-American in the long jump and triple jump, averaged 10.7 points and a team high 6.3 rebounds. Kahl averaged 9.9 points and 4.3 rebounds. Herrman seemed to be fully recovered from a season-ending knee injury two years ago and brings a point guard mentality to a wing guard spot. Churchill, the Blue Devils' point guard, led the Blue Devils in assists with 3.4 per game and averaged 7.1 points. Churchill was not afraid to go underneath, grabbing 4.4 rebounds. Erichsen is a two-time all-conference honorable mention pick and teams with Verdegan underneath. Erichsen led Stout in scoring with 11.7 points and had 5.3 rebounds. Ellsworth has been the hard luck Blue Devil over the past three years, missing parts or all of two seasons due to injury, but looks to be ready at a guard spot. Nemitz and Hendricks added quality minutes, with Nemitz pulling down 4.0 rebounds and averaging 6.3 points. "This group of kids will give us an opportunity to have a successful season," 17th year coach Mark Thomas said. "This is an athletic, experienced group that has a chance to be real good." The juniors and seniors tasted a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championship during the 2001-02 season. "This group has been around the block," Thomas said. "Now, they have to establish their own identity. We are looking to see who is our "go-to" player. This group has played hard. They are able to withstand adversity and turn it into a positive." While the Blue Devils will still move the ball up and down the court, Thomas is looking for a few improvements here and there. "We will have to score more around the basket, and that's not necessarily the post players," Thomas said. "We must do a better job being smarter with the ball in transition and our half-court defense must be more solid." "Erickson, Verdegan, Nemitz, Philipsky and Thoe should be tough around the basket," Thomas said. "Churchill, Kahl, Herrman and Ellsworth should help us on the perimeter." Thomas said his returners know what they are looking for and take pains to get there. "They have always been a task-oriented group," Thomas said. "They seem really focused and have taken the responsibility of being an older group. They are looking for challenges by the (coaching) staff, and I like that." A large group of first year players will figure into the line-up that generally sees 15 or more players into a game. First year players Amanda Geissler (Fr, Thorp), Savannah Oeltjen (Fr, Spring Valley, Minn), Liz Eldred (Fr, South Range), DeJarnette Nelson (Jr, Tusla, Okla), Jenny McDermid (Fr, Oconto Falls) and Leah Johnson (Fr, Osseo) will be joined by returners Sarah Miles (So, Luck), and Brittany Evert (So, Hendricks, Minn). Stout will open their season by traveling to Michigan to participate in the Kalamazoo College Tournament, Nov. 21-22, then will be at Northwestern, Minn., Nov. 25. Stout will open home play, Sunday, Nov. 30, by hosting Northland College.A WIAC women's basketball preview of all WIAC teams can be found at: WIAC Women's Preview
November 17, 2003BLUE DEVILS TO OPEN SEASON WITH TRIP TO THE SOUTH MENOMONIE - To say that fourth year UW-Stout men's basketball coach Eddie Andrist is excited about getting the 2003-04 season underway could be an understatement. "This could be the best team since I've been here, baring any unforeseen circumstances," the always upbeat Andrist said. "We are athletic and have good speed and size. Depth should be a strength, where we could go 12-deep."Three seniors will be the cornerstone to any Blue Devil success - post players Nate Templer (Sr, Beaver Dam, 6-5, 225) and Andy Bray (Sr, Menomonee, Mich, 6-8, 225) and outside player Jeff Vandenberghe (Sr, Coon Rapids, Minn, 6-3, 170). Both Templer and Bray were honorable mention all-conference last season. "These are the most talented seniors since I have been here," Andrist said. "It is time for the seniors to step up. They need to take the program to the next level. We were really close last year." The Blue Devils, who finished at 14-11 overall, 9-7 in league play, put together a seven game winning streak midway through the season, finding themselves in first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) at one point, and also won four of five overtime games. Balanced scoring was a key for Stout last year as five players averaged double digit scoring - the three returning seniors among them. Stout has been picked to finish fourth in a preseason WIAC poll. Templer advanced to the NCAA national track meet in three events last spring as a sprinter and averaged 11.2 points and 5.7 rebounds on the court. Templer was capable of some "in-your-face-ball", putting back 42 blocked shots, including a school record eight blocks against UW-Whitewater. Bray was the team's top scorer with 14.6 points and matched Templer's rebound totals. Vandenberghe, the Blue Devils' leading threat from beyond the arc, averaged 10.4 points. The lanky senior led the team in steal, snagging 46. "I am confident these senior will step it up," said Andrist. The Blue Devils will need to find a new point guard, a spot that was hurt by injury last season. Nate Severson (So Eau Claire) saw some time at the point last year, but is usually a shooting guard. While averaging just less than 20 minutes of playing time, Severson averaged 4.6 points and pulled down 3.0 rebounds."Nate is ready to take that next step in his development," Andrist said. Returning sophomore Mike Lee (Marshfield), transfers Greg Chaisson (So, Minneapolis, Minn) and Isaac Reece (Jr, Sterling, Kan), and true freshman Blake Craft (Chicago, Ill) are expected to vie for the spot. Guard Luke Loney (So, River Falls) played the last half of the season following a preseason injury. Despite limited time, Loney established himself as a 3-point threat. Andrist has been pleased by his work ethic throughout the offseason. Jordan Burns (So, Colfax) saw valuable floor time last year. Terry Farmer (So, Kenosha) is expected to be recovered from knee surgery and true freshman Nate Fern (Hammond) has been an intense player during the preseason. Size off the bench certainly will not be a problem for the Blue Devils. Adam Maslowski (So, Marshfield, 6-6, 225) brings another big threat underneath. An engineering major with a 4.0 grade point average, Maslowski has made a name as the ultimate role player. "He will do what ever we need him to do," Andrist said. Maslowski averaged two rebounds per contest in only seven minutes per game as a freshman. Landon Stack (So, Pleasant View, Tenn, 6-7, 190) has been with the program for a year after sitting out last season. Stack transferred from NCAA Division II Lander University in South Carolina. "We expect great things from him," Andrist said. "He can run the floor." Twin brothers Jacob Nonemacher (Fr, Kalispel, Mont, 7-0, 240) and John Nonemacher (Fr, Kalispel, Mont, 7-0, 225) will see a fair amount of time, said Andrist. Stout opens the season by taking a road trip south. The Blue Devils will be at the University of the South Classic in Sewanee, Tenn., Nov. 21-22. The Blue Devils will stay in the south, traveling to Transylvania University in Kentucky, Nov. 24 and Manchester College, Nov. 26, in Indiana. Stout will host their own tournament, Nov. 28-29.
