October 14, 2002HOMECOMING FEATURES BLUE DEVILS HOSTING CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD
Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers (5-1) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (4-1) ON THE LINE: This game between the first time ever opponents is more than just an individual match between two teams - the defense of each of the leagues is at stake with possible playoff ramifications down the road. At the present time, WIAC schools have won four of the five meetings between the two conferences. Individually, this game pits a couple of the top teams of each conference. UW-Stout (4-1, 2-1 WIAC) is currently in second place in the WIAC, while Concordia-Moorhead (5-1, 5-0) is currently on top of the MIAC, a half-game ahead of St. John's, and is on a five game winning streak. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils was not running on all gears (Stout tallied only 192 total yards), but the defense certainly was as Stout held UW-Oshkosh to 185 total yards, 29 on the ground, in a 24-3 win. The Blue Devil secondary had five interceptions, including three by Eric Moe, who set a new mark for career interceptions, and now has 18. Oshkosh took a 3-0 lead, but Stout took a 7-3 lead when Phil Ashfield, playing for the injured Nick Ohman, ran in from seven yards out and jumped ahead 14-3 when tailback Ryan Englebert hit Dan Austin with a 28-yard TD pass one play after Moe's second interception of the day. Evan Larsen hit his first collegiate field goal in the third quarter to push the score to 17-3 and Moe's 34-yard fourth quarter interception return closed out the scoring. Linebackers Jamie Spielman and Mark Ralph had solid games, with Spielman recording 16 tackles with 10 solo, and Ralph finished with 10 tackles. Concordia: After a scoreless first quarter, the Cobbers' scored early in the second on a Jeremy Hinderks 2-yard plunge, and it was off to races for a 38-13 win over Augsburg for Concordia's homecoming. Quarterback Ryan Hebrink gave the Cobbers a 14-0 lead, scored from 49-yards out, then later in the quarter, hooked up with Shawn Reile for a 26-yard TD score for a 21-0 halftime lead. Augsburg scored early in the third, but running back Bobby Clarke answered with a 54-yard TD run. The Auggies tightened the score to 28-13, but the Cobbers put the game away when Hebrink found Riele again, this time from 31-yards out. A Brian Halverson 27-yard field goal finished the scoring. Concordia totaled 359 yards, 206 on the ground, 153 in the air, while holding Augsburg to 247, 69 rushing. LAST SEASON: Stout is a member of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 6-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third) in the WIAC. The Blue Devils were WIAC champions in 2000. Concordia is a member of the nine-team Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and have been MIAC champions 17 times, the last time in 1995. Bundgaard trails Bob Johnson (1979-82) with 2656 yards, but needs only 91 yards for the mark. Bundgaard is seventh on the all-time scoring list with 146 points. Mike McHugh (1964-67) is sixth with 150 points. Bob Johnson and Rich Vargas (1990-92) are tied for fourth with 158 points. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "I thought the quarterbacks (freshmen Phil Ashfield & Jon Severson), for guys put into a hard situation, played well enough for us to win. Our defense played the type of game we said they had to play. They didn't allow short fields to bother them and turned around and gave the offense short fields. Our offensive line fell flat on it's face in a game they needed to perform well. We can afford to have a bad game, but that was bad timing. We should never be held to under 100 yards rushing. "Concordia will run a shuttle option, but they will spread things out. Their quarterback (Ryan) Hebrink is a Nick Ohman-type quarterback. Their line is a bigger version of St. Thomas. This is our homecoming and it also gives us a chance for our fifth win. We get a chance to defend the WIAC's honor, and a win would give the WIAC another notch. They are used to winning games. The key to this game is for us to be physical." > RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; the game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com October 12, 2002DEFENSE LEADS BLUE DEVILS TO 24-3 WIN OVER OSHKOSHMENOMONIE - Eric Moe (Sr, Hixton) had three interceptions and returned one for a touchdown as UW-Stout ran out to a 24-3 win over UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 12 at Don & Nona Williams Stadium. As a team, Stout intercepted five passes, with Tyrone Rhone (Sr, Milwaukee) and Rob Weinstein (So, Racine) also making interceptions Moe, who had not had an interception in the previous four games, entered the season tied with Jack Voigt with 15 career interceptions, and his first interception in the second quarter snapped the mark. Moe returned a pass 34 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring. Things didn't start so easily for Stout, as the Blue Devils offense was relatively sluggish in the first half, rolling up only 129 total yards, but did carry a 14-3 lead into halftime. The Blue Devils (4-1, 2-1) drove to the Oshkosh 13 on the their first drive, but a field goal went wide right. Oshkosh (2-3, 1-2) drew first blood on a 26-yard Ryan Fitzgerald field goal two minutes into the second quarter. Stout missed another field goal opportunity two minutes later and it wasn't until Oshkosh gave Stout a gift on a muffed punt deep in Oshkosh territory that Stout would score. Stout took advantage only two plays later when Phil Ashfield (Fr, Oakdale, Minn), making his first start at quarterback, bulled his way to paydirt from seven yards out with 7:13 left in the half. Moe's first interception set up Stout's next score after he returned the ball 22 yards to the Oshkosh 28. Tailback Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) lofted a floater to Dan Austin (So, Clintonville) on the next play to pull Stout ahead 14-3. Stout scored four minutes into the third quarter after Rhone returned a punt 18 yards to the Oshkosh 18. Evan Larsen (Fr, River Falls) nailed his first career field goal, a 28-yard shot. Moe closed out the scoring with his 34-yard return down the west sideline. Every yard was hard fought as Stout was held to only 192 total - 81 rushing - while Oshkosh was limited to 185 total yards. Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) led all rushers with 51 yards, his lowest output of the season, but it was enough to move him to second on Stout's all-time rushing list, passing Steve Burr, with 2566 career yards. Englebert finished with 39 yards. Ashfield completed seven passes for 74 yards, with Austin hauling in two passes for 28 yards, Jason Kuehn (So, Augusta) one for 38 yards and Seth Mattison (So, Byron, Minn) three for 20 yards. The Titans were held to only 29 rushing yards, with quarterback Nick Wara netting 10 yards. Wara was 18-for-42 for 156 yards through the air. Kris Johnson snagged eight passes for 75 yards, and Steve Wagner five for 49 yards. Linebackers Jamie Spielman (Sr, Menomonie) and Mark Ralph (Sr, Colfax) had top-notch games. Spielman was in on seemingly every play, racking up 16 tackles, 10 of them solo, with five tackles for loss. Ralph had 10 tackles. Moe finished with five tackles, the three interception returns for a total of 56 yards, and broke up four passes. Stout steps out of the conference next week when they host Concordia-Moorhead, Saturday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. for homecoming.
October 11, 2002BLUE DEVILS RECORD FOURTH TIE OF CONFERENCE SEASONMENOMONIE - The good news for the UW-Stout soccer team is they are still undefeated in conference play. The bad news is Stout just broke a conference record for most ties during a conference season as the Blue Devils tied with UW-River Falls, 2-2, Friday, Oct. 11 at Nelson Field. Stout ran their record to 5-2-4 over all, 1-0-4 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. The Blue Devils brought the top ranked conference defensive squad into the game, and the Falcons (8-2-1, 4-2-1) brought in the top ranked scoring offensive squad. But it was Stout that controlled the pitch most of the evening, outshooting the Falcons 18-4. River Falls scored first, only four minutes into the second half when Amy Gilfillan dribbled around Blue Devil goalkeeper Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac) to record her 21st goal of the season. Stout answered back 11 minutes later as Sarah Geiger (Jr, West Bend) picked up the loose change from Kristy Symons (Fr, Reedsburg) for her first goal of the season and only her second collegiate goal. Gilfillan returned the favor at the 68 minute mark when she dribbled downfield and scored again. Stout was not to be outdone. At the 74 minute mark, Rosa Cambray (Jr, Delavan) sent a cross through the box several feet in front of the net that Nellie Sivertsen (Sr, River Falls) knocked home with her shoulder. Ballweg finished with two saves, while Falcons' goalkeeper Apryl Jennrich knocked down seven shots. Stout travels to UW-Stevens Point Tuesday, Oct. 15, then returns home Friday, Oct. 18 to host Gustavus Adolphus at 7 p.m. October 8, 2002RAINA SCHNEIDER NAMED WIAC SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - Raina Schneider (Sr, Sheboygan/South HS), a central defender for UW-Stout was named the women's soccer defensive player of the week by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). October 9, 2002BLUE DEVILS SWEEP PAST YELLOWJACKETSMENOMONIE - Even a couple of lethargic opening first games did not prevent UW-Stout from sweeping past UW-Superior in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) volleyball contest, Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils (20-4, 3-1) fell behind Superior, 14-12, in the first game, but stormed back for a 30-20 win, then fell into the same pattern in the second game, trailing 16-10 before taking a 30-26 win. The third game was all Stout, 30-19. Lindsay Mensink (So, Ostrander, Minn) led the 19th nationally ranked Blue Devils with 10 kills. Tanille Zenner (Fr, Athens) added eight kills and one solo block and four block assists. Katie O'Hara had seven kills for Superior (6-12, 1-4).
