October 7, 2002BLUE DEVILS BEGIN TWO-GAME HOMESTAND BY HOSTING OSHKOSH
UW-Oshkosh (2-2, 0-1) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (3-1, 1-1)
LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils missed an opportunity to win the game in regulation but missed a field goal as time ticked off the clock. Stout used a field goal in overtime to take a 31-28 lead, but Platteville's Matt Kent hauled in his third TD catch of the afternoon. The game was an offensive showcase for both teams. Stout rolled up 539 total yards, 292 in the air, 247 on the ground, had 99 total plays and held a 35-25 minute lead in time of possession. The Pioneers finished with 452 total yards, 378 in the air, 74 by rushing. Stout's Ryan Englebert rushed for 114 yards and a TD, while Luke Bundgaard scored two TDs and ran for 89 yards. Dan Austin hauled in six Nick Ohman passes for 125 yards, and Julio Vargas had six grabs for 96 yards. Oshkosh: The Titans, who were off last week, gave UW-Eau Claire all they could handle before bowing out, 12-10, in Eau Claire, Sept. 28. The Titans jumped to an early 3-0 lead, but Eau Claire knotted the score with a field goal late in the second quarter. The Blugolds took the lead in the third quarter, but the Titans regained the lead on a 35-yard interception return by Nick Carlson. The Blugolds notched the win with a 27-yard field goal with 3:46 remaining.
LAST SEASON: Stout and Oshkosh are both members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Stout was 6-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third) in the WIAC. The Blue Devils were WIAC champions in 2000. Oshkosh was 3-7 overall, 2-5 (5th, tie) in league play.
THE SERIES: This is the 46th meeting between the two teams and the Titans hold a 25-19-1 lead in the series. Last season's 19-7 loss to Oshkosh sent the Blue Devils on an offensive drought that saw them remain scoreless for almost 130 minutes. After forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff, Stout's Julio Vargas hauled in an 11-yard TD pass only 1:34 into the game. The Titans scored on a 43-yard Shannon King reception to tie in the first, then went ahead on a safety in the second quarter. Five Stout fumbles doomed the Blue Devils, and Oshkosh put up 10 points in the third for the win. Stout would go scoreless the next weekend at Eau Claire, then allowed 20 River Falls' first quarter points before going on to a 26-23 win over the Falcons.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "What we did Saturday was not a formula for a loss. What we did will win 99 percent of the games, but we were the one percent. They made one more play than we did, and that was in overtime. We gave up some opportunistic drives at the wrong time, and gave up three big plays. "Oshkosh has had two weeks to prepare, and that concerns us. They have some nice WIAC players. (Head coach) Phil (Meyer) has done a nice job. They have one of the best defensive fronts we will have played. And their free safety (Nick) Carlson, we must ID where he is all the time."

October 5, 2002BLUE DEVILS LOSE FIRST GAME OF THE YEAR, 34-31, IN OVERTIME
PLATTEVILLE - Matt Kent caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Tom Stetzer in overtime to give UW-Platteville a 34-31 win over previously undefeated UW-Stout, Saturday, Oct. 5, in Platteville.
The Pioneers (2-1, 1-0) won the toss and elected to go on defense. The Blue Devils (3-1, 1-1) couldn't get into the end zone, but Justin Zymewski (So, Houston, Minn) connected on a 37-yard field goal to give Stout a 31-28 lead.
Zymewski did not have a good day, missing his first three field goals of the game, including one in the waning minutes of regulation.
Stout struck first in the game, with Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) rumbling to the end zone from 40 yards to give Stout a 7-0 lead only two minutes into the game.
But the Pioneer pass attack needed only three plays to answer back when Stetzer found running back Greg Siebers and Siebers went 68-yards to paydirt.
Stout missed two field goals in the second quarter, but the Pioneers didn't as Jason Borchardt hit 23- and 22-yard 3-pointers to give Platteville a 13-7 halftime lead.
The Blue Devils took over coming out of the locker room. Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) scored on a 22-yard run only a minute into the half to give Stout the 14-13 lead and quarterback Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) hit Seth Mattison (So, Byron, Minn) with a 5-yard scoring play for a 21-13 lead.
But Stetzer, who completed 24-of-57 passes for 378 yards, put the Pioneers back in the game, completing a 39-yard pass play to Kent. Stetzer and Kent hooked up for the 2-point conversion, and the game was tied at 21-21.
Stout went on a well executed, 15 play, 97-yard drive, and Bundgaard took scoring honors with a one yard plunge. But the Pioneers matched Stout again, and again it was Stetzer to Kent, this time for 44 yards and a score with 3:17 left in the game.
Stout got into scoring position, but Zymewski's 23-yard attempt sailed wide left as time ran out, setting up the overtime period.
Englehart finished the game with 114 yards on 18 carries, while Bundgaard ran for 89 yards on 19 carries. Ohman was 20-for-44 for 292 yards passing and rushed for 30 yards. Dan Austin (So, Clintonville) was on the receiving end of six passes for 125 yards. Julio Vargas (So, Sturgeon Bay) pulled down six passes for 96 yards.
The Blue Devil defense held Platteville to 74 yards rushing - the most of any team this season - but it was Stetzer and the passing game that put the biggest hurt on Stout. Kent finished with nine catches for 174 yards and three TDs. Siebers had six catches for 113 yards.
What may have hurt the Blue Devils the most was themselves. Stout was called for 15 penalties for 144 yards.
Stout returns home for a two-game homestand by hosting UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. Stout will host Concordia-Moorhead for homecoming, Saturday, Oct. 19.

But it was freshman Kristy Symons (Reedsburg) who got things going for the Blue Devils (5-2-3, 1-0-3) with her first collegiate goal at the 4:45 mark of the game, getting an assist by Krista Hight (So, Brookfield).
Sivertsen scored her first goal of the game with seven minutes left in the half, with an assist by Carrie Schrank (So, Reedsburg). Sivertsen notched her second score of the game, this time unassisted, 13 minutes into the second half.
Stolarczyk opened her scoring bid eight minutes later, on an assist by Sivertsen. Stolarczyk closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute.
Goalkeepers Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac) and Steph Hennick (Fr, Elk River, Minn) combined for the shutout, with Ballweg snagging the only saves.

NEW ULM, Minn - Freshman Kelly Stolarczyk (Elk River, Minn) scored two goals and added an assist to lead UW-Stout to a 3-0 non-conference win over Martin Luther College, Wednesday, Oct. 2 in New Ulm, Minn.
The Blue Devils' leading scorer, Nellie Sivertsen (Sr, River Falls) got Stout going in the 11th minute with her fifth goal of the season, coming on assists from Stolarczyk and Krista Hight (So, Brookfield).
Stolarczyk scored her two goals only four minutes apart, scoring in the 38th minute and the 42nd minute. Heidi Schultz (Fr, River Falls) assisted on both goals and Kala Schmuck (Fr, New Glarus) and Rachel Anderson (So, Victoria, Minn) each recorded an assist.
The Blue Devil (4-2-3) defense limited the Knights' (7-3-1) two leading scorers to only two shots in the game.
Goalkeepers Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac) and Steph Hennick (Fr, Elk River, Minn) shared the shutout, but saw relatively little work. Ballweg had three saves in 67 minutes and Hennick two in 23 minutes.

MENOMONIE - In a battle of nationally ranked teams, the UW-Stout volleyball team came out on top of Bethel College, 3-1, in the first game of a triangular at Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout closed out the day with a 3-0 win over Viterbo University.
