BLUE DEVILS TRAVEL TO PLATTEVILLE IN CONFERENCE TILT

UW-Stout Blue Devils (3-0, 1-0) at UW-Platteville Pioneers (1-1, 0-0)
Saturday, Oct. 5, 2 p.m.
Ralph E. Davis Stadium, Platteville, Wis.

ON THE LINE: The conference blitz begins this week as UW-Stout will head to UW-Platteville to face the air-it-out offense the Pioneers have established the last several years under coach Mike Emmendorfer.

LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils defense put together another stellar performance as they shut down St. Thomas, 28-7, for most of the game. The Blue Devils held the Tommies to 19 yards rushing, and pretty much shut down their passing game, allowing 124 yards, much of that coming in the second period when St. Thomas scored to make it 14-7. Luke Bundgaard answered back with his second TD of the quarter just before the halftime break. Stout tallied 414 total yards of offense, with Bundgaard picking up 169 yards and fellow tailback Ryan Englebert getting 132. Englebert added a TD in the third quarter. The Blue Devils opened the game with a Nick Ohman to Dan Austin 3-yard TD toss with three minutes left in the first quarter, then came back with Bundgaard's first score of the night six minutes later.

Platteville: Lightning forced the cancellation of the Pioneers' game with ranked Augustana just minutes after Augustana took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter. After a one-and-a-half hour break in the unrelenting weather, officials and coaches decided the completely wash out the game. The week before, in a 32-20 loss to Hope, the two teams combined for 1002 total yards, 868 through the air. The Pioneers' Tom Stetzer was 34-of-61 for 427 yards and two TDs.

LAST SEASON: Stout and Platteville are both members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Stout was 6-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third) in the WIAC. The Blue Devils were WIAC champions in 2000 and their 16-4 overall record over the past two seasons is the best in the league during that stretch. Platteville was 4-6 overall, 3-5 (5th) in league play.

THE SERIES: This is the 46th meeting between the two teams and the Pioneers hold a 27-17-1 lead. Last season, the two team inaugurated Williams Stadium and Stout had to come-from-behind to take a 28-14 win. Tom Stetzer threw for 446 yards and two TDs for the Pioneers, but Stout's Julio Vargas (by air) and Luke Bundgaard (by land) each scored two TDs apiece.

STOUT PLAYERS TO WATCH: RB Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) 58 carries, 339 yds, 5.8 y/car, 113.0 y/g, 4 TD; QB Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) 71 att, 38 comp, 2 int, 442 yds, 6 TD, 147.3 y/game, 21 car, 83 yds, 4.0 y/car; RB Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) 57 Carries, 248 yds, 4.4 y/car, 82.7 y/g, 2 TD; WR Dan Austin (So, Clintonville) 10 rec, 133 yds, 3 TDs; DB Eric Moe (Sr, Hixton) needs one INT to become Stout's all-time interception leader, preseason All-America; DB Kevin Dewey (Jr, Burnsville, Minn) one fumble recovery, one fumble forced, one INT, two pass break-ups, one sack; LB Jamie Spielman (Sr, Menomonie) 21 tackles, 15 solo, 3 tackles for loss of 12 yds, 2 sacks for 10 yds; LB Noah Mayer (So, Mayville) 12 tackles, 10 solo, 5 tackls for loss of 35 yds, 4 sacks for 30 yds; Blue Devils avg 401.7 total ypg, 254.3 rushing, 147.3 passing; give up 162.7 total ypg, 22.0 rushing, 140.7 passing. Stout has outscored their opponents, 97-27.

PLATTEVILLE PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Tom Stetzer (Jr, Black River Falls) 132 att, 64 comp, 0 int, 755 yds, 3 TD, 16 carries, 44 yds; WR Reggie Davis (Sr, Madison) 21 rec, 226 yds, 113 y/g, 1 TDs; WR Jason Leonard (Jr, Hollandale) 16 rec, 171 yds, 85 y/g; RB Greg Siebers (Jr, Appleton) 12 carries, 40 yds, 14 rec, 153 yds, 76.5 y/g; WR Matt Kent (Jr, Gratiot) 10 rec, 182 yds, 2 TDs, 91.0 y/g; LB Kevin Mijal (Sr, Pulaski) 5 tackles, 5 solo, 3 tackles for loss of 11 yds, 3 sacks for loss of 11 yds; DE Jeff Christianson (Jr, Belmont) 7 tackles, 3 solo, 3 tackles for loss of 12 yds; Pioneers avg. 457.0 total yds, 67.5 rushing, 389.5 passing; give up 317.0 total yds, 55.0 rushing, 262.0 passing. Pioneers have been outscored by opponents, 38-27.

OFFENSIVE LOOK: Platteville: Pro-spread; Stout: multi-pro. DEFENSIVE LOOK: Platteville: 4-2 pressure; Stout: 3-4.

COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (45-48 career) is in his 10th year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. Platteville coach Mike Emendorfer (12-20) is in his fourth year.

BUNDGAARD WATCH: Luke Bundgaard is currently third on the Stout all-time rushing list with 2426 yards. Bundgaard trails Bob Johnson (1979-82) with 2656 yards and Steve Burr (1976-79) with 2562 yards. Bundgaard is now eighth on the all-time scoring list with 134 points. Shawn Lund ( 1996-99) has 136 points.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "Against St. Thomas, our defense kept us in good field position, then our offense dominated the time of possession, moved the ball and then scored points.

"This game against Platteville is a big game for us. For us to come back 4-0 with a two game homestand in front of us, that would inflate our chests, and confident teams are tough to beat. (Quarterback) Tom Stetzer is a big country kid that throws the ball well and is not afraid to throw an interception. Offensively, we need to be physical and defensively, we need to get after the quarterback. At the same time, if we take care our house, we will be okay. This is their homecoming. We just need to go down there and take care of a conference game."

RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; the game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com

RUNNING BACKS TAKE IT TO TOMMIES, DEVILS WIN 28-7

ST. PAUL, Minn
- UW-Stout running backs Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) and Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) combined for more than 300 yards of rushing as the Blue Devils defeated St. Thomas, 28-7, Saturday, Sept. 28 at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.

Bundgaard rushed for 169 yards and two TDs and Englebert rushed for 132 as the duo combined for 301 of Stout's 346 yards on the ground.

Bundgaard scored one TD with two seconds remaining in the first half to give Stout a 20-7 lead. Bundgaard's score was set up by a diving catch by Matt Sprester (Jr, Clear Lake) at the Tommies' one-yard line.

The score came after the Tommies had sliced into Stout's lead. The Tommies' Nick Ambrasas hooked up with Justin Kostner from 9-yards out with 2:32 remaining in the half to move the score to 14-7.

The Blue Devils (3-0) needed only the remaining time to drive 65 yards to paydirt and take a 20-7 lead into the locker room.

The Blue Devils opened the scoring with three minutes remaining in the first quarter when Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) hooked up with Dan Austin (So, Clintonville) for a 3-yard score. Bundgaard scored his first TD of the day less than six minutes later when he rushed in from a yard out.

Englebert got into the scoring action late in the third quarter when he barreled over from a yard out.

For the third week in a row, the Blue Devil defense was stellar, holding the Tommies to 143 total yards, with only 19 on the ground and 124 through the air. Stout held St. Thomas to only 11 total yards in the second half.

The Tommies (2-2) got only 10 first downs and Stout held a 37 minute to 22 minute bulge in time of possession.

Stout's offense went to the ground game, in contrast to last week's win over UW-Eau Claire, where the Blue Devils spent much of the time in the air. Stout had 426 yards of offense on 90 plays. Ohman completed 8-of-15 passes for 68 yards and the TD to Austin. He also rushed for 24 yards.

Tyrone Rhone (Sr, Milwaukee) and Joe Seep (Fr, Reedsburg) both recorded their first Stout interceptions. Stout linebacker Jamie Spielman (Sr, Menomonie) had nine tackles, seven of them solo.

Stout returns to WIAC play Saturday, Oct. 5, when they travel to UW-Platteville for a 2 p.m. contest. The Pioneers' game with Augustana, Sept. 28, was cancelled in the third quarter due to lightning. Augustana led 21-14 at the time.
