2002-03 IN THE BOOKS
The Blue Devils will wrap up the season this weekend when they compete at the Last weekend's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships marked the end of the 2002-03 athletic season, another successful year for UW-Stout athletics. Included in this final weekly newsletter of the year is a synopsis of the awards and honors gathered by Blue Devil athletes this season.

The Blue Devil This Week will return on a weekly basis the final week of August when the 2003-04 season gets underway. There will be periodic updates throughout the summer.

GREG MEINERTZ NAMED TO ALL-MIDWEST REGION BASEBALL TEAM

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) was named to the third team of the 2003 NCAA Division III All-Midwest Region baseball team.

Meinertz, an outfielder who was a first team all-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) choice, ranked in the WIAC's top 10 in five different offensive categories, hitting percentage (.383, tied for fifth), slugging percentage (.546, 10th), hits (54, fourth), doubles (12, tied for fifth) and total bases (77, eighth). Meinertz hit a team-high three home runs, two of them grand slams.

Meinertz started the season slowly at the plate, working his way up from a batting average of .143 early in the season to become Stout's most prolific hitter. Midway through the season, Meinertz was hitting at a .456 clip before settling into the .380-area. Meinertz led Stout in batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits and total bases.

ANN SCHACHTNER JUST MISSES ALL-AMERICA HONORS

CANTON, NY - UW-Stout's Ann Schachtner (So, Somerset) advanced out of the preliminary round of the shot put competion at the 2003 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday, May 24 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., but came up short in her bid for All-America status.

Schachtner tossed the shot put 42-feet, 6.25-inches during the preliminaries, but could not extend her distance in the final round and finished ninth during the wet, drizzly early afternoon. The top eight are named All-America. Healy Thompson of Williams College won the event with a throw of 49-9.75.

INJURY FORCES NATE TEMPLER OUT OF FINALS

CANTON, N.Y. - UW-Stout's Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) was forced to withdraw from his final two races due to injury at NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Saturday, May 24 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

An injury late Thursday forced Templer to miss the 100-meter preliminaries, Friday, and the 200-meter finals, Saturday.

LEWIS CASSELLIUS COMPETES AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

CANTON, N.Y. - UW-Stout's Lewis Cassellius (Jr, Glenwood City) placed 18th in the pole vault on the second day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Friday, May 23 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

Cassellius, who was making his first appearance at the national meet, vaulted 14-feet, 7.25-inches. Hans Schmidt of UW-La Crosse won the event with a meet record mark of 17-6.50.

NATE TEMPLER ADVANCES TO FINALS IN 200-METER DASH

CANTON, N.Y. - UW-Stout's Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) qualified to the finals of the 200-meter dash during the first day of the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Thursday, May 22 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

Templer finished fourth in his preliminary heat with a time of 22.14 seconds, qualifying him for the finals in the ninth and final spot, Saturday, May 24. Event favorite Andrew Rock of UW-La Crosse fielded the top time at 21.46 seconds.

The Blue Devil 4x100-meter relay team, in which Templer ran the second leg, did not make it out of the preliminary rounds, despite beating the old stadium record. The team of Sam Werner (Jr, Elk Mound), Templer, Brady Hurtgen (So, Ridgeland) and Joe Seep (Fr, Reedsburg) finished at 42.25 seconds and placed 13th. Rowan University in New Jersey posted the top time in the event at 40.83 seconds.
