September 16, 2002BLUE DEVILS OPEN CONFERENCE SEASON BY HOSTING RIVAL EAU CLAIRE UW-Eau Claire Blugolds (2-0, 0-0) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (1-0, 0-0)Saturday, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. Don & Nona Williams Stadium ON THE LINE: The 2002 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) begins with this game between two nationally ranked teams that are only 25 miles apart and the rivalry is a lively one. Stout was picked in the WIAC preseason poll to win the title with the Blugolds picked third. But the Blugolds, who shared the title last year with UW-Stevens Point, have made a point early this season, upending preseason No. 1 nationally ranked St. John's University in the opening game of the season, then disposed of Augsburg College last Saturday. This will be Eau Claire's second consecutive game on an artificial surfaced field. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils defense kept Millsaps College completely out of the game in the first first half as Stout went on to a 30-6 win in Jackson, Miss., Sept. 14 in the Blue Devils opener. Fullback Matt Schaueble scored two TDs - one of the ground, another in the air - quarterback Nick Ohman connected on a 57 yard TD strike with Matt Sprester and Justin Zmyewski hit three field goals and three PATs for 12 points. The Blue Devil defense held Millsaps to 114 total yards - 38 on the ground - and recorded five sacks. Safety Kevin Dewey had a fumble recovery, a pass interception, forced a fumble and recorded a sack. Eau Claire: Eau Claire jumped out to a 24-0 halftime lead en route to a 37-13 win at Augsburg, Sept. 14. With a 3-0 lead, quarterback Jeremy Darnell ran for a nine-yard run with just seconds left on the first quarter clock, then, following a 46-yard complete to Matt Evenson, Darnell threw a two-yard TD to tight end Brad Newton. Brian Mitchell closed out the half with a two-yard run. Augsburg's Mathew Shannon scored both Auggie TDs on pass receptions of 61 and 81 yards. Joe Gast and Matthew Hennessey added TDs in the fourth quarter for the Blugolds. Darnell completed 21-of-41 passes for 266 yards and scattered his throws to 10 different receivers. LAST SEASON: Stout and Eau Claire are both members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Stout was 6-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third) in the WIAC. The Blue Devils were WIAC champions in 2000 and their 16-4 overall record over the past two seasons is the best in the league during that stretch. The Blugolds (8-2, 5-2) shared the title last season with UW-Stevens Point and just missed a bid for the NCAA playoffs. THE SERIES: This is the 76th meeting of the two teams with the series beginning in 1917. Stout holds a 3-2 lead in the series over the last five years, the teams have split evenly the last 10 meetings and Eau Claire holds a 43-36-6 lead in the series. In a driving rain storm that turned Carson Park into a bowl of mud, the Blugolds took a 33-0 win over Stout last October. The stats were relatively close - Stout had 185 total yards, Eau Claire 202 - but the only stat that counted was on the board and Eau Claire scored early and often, opening the game on a 47-yard Jeremy Bergeron TD from Brian Rassmussen only 26 seconds into the game. Darrell Souhrada scored three TDs. The Blue Devils lost the ball on fumbles twice, with Jay Hoyord picking up the change for a 78-yard fumble recovery for a score. COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (43-48 career) is in his 10th year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. Eau Claire coach Todd Hofner (18-14) is in his fourth year.STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "Our defense picked up right where they left off last year. We were very aggressive and made plays behind the line of scrimmage. Offensively, you take away the 12 penalties, and I was excited by what we were doing. We had two touchdowns taken away (by penalty) and had some stifling drives. Millsaps was a very well coached team. We physically had to move them and we needed to make plays to win this game. "The trip is over, and now we have a big rival with a big crowd. There is a lot of anticipation for this game. To rush 150 yards is a tough get. They are young on offense, but (Eau Claire coach) Todd (Hofner) is very good at moving people around and putting points on the board. This game is it - and it's still early." September 14, 2002DEWEY'S DEFENSE KEYS BLUE DEVILS SEASON-OPENING WINJACKSON, Miss - Safety Kevin Dewey (Jr, Burnsville) recovered a fumble, had an interception and forced a fumble, providing much of the fuel for a UW-Stout 30-6 win over Millsaps College in the Blue Devils' season opener, Saturday, Sept. 14 in Jackson, Miss. All three Millsaps miscues were turned into points by the opportunistic Blue Devils. Dewey recovered the fumble early in the first quarter on the Majors' 30-yard line, with fullback Matt Schaeuble (So, Wrightstown) going four yards at the 8:38 mark for his first of two TDs. Midway through the second quarter, Justin Zymewski (So, Houston, Minn) connected on a 27-yard field goal for a 10-0 Stout lead. Nine minutes later, quarterback Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) hooked up with transfer Matt Sprester (Jr, Clear Lake) for a 57-yard pass play to give Stout the 17-0 lead with 3:53 remaining in the half. Dewey gave the Blue Devils another opportunity with his interception and Stout settled for a 17-yard Zymewski field goal with 37 seconds left in the half as Stout took a 20-0 lead into the locker room. Zymewski booted a 38-yard field goal with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter. The drive began when Dewey forced a fumble. The Majors (1-1) eventually got on the board with their best drive of the evening on a 14-yard run by Jay Liles, but their point after failed. Schaeuble closed out the scoring, hooking up with Ohman with 2:31 left in the game on a seven-yard pass play. Blue Devil tailbacks combined for 155 yards - 117 more than the defense allowed Millsaps - in rushing with Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaueser) picking up 93 yards and Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) getting 62 yards in his first game as a Blue Devil. Ohman was 12-for-24 with two interceptions for 156 yards. Sprester had the one catch for 56 yards. Dan Austin (So, Clintonville) pulled down three aerials for 39 yards. The Blue Devils tallied 324 total yards, while Millsaps was held to 114, 38 on the ground, 76 in the air. Stout pressured the Millsaps quarterbacks all evening, notching five, with Dewey, Jamie Spielman (Sr, Menomonie), Nate Magestad (Sr, Pensilly, Minn), and Nate Rykal (So, Chippewa Falls) getting solo sacks, while Noah Meyer (So, Mayville) and Joe Kersten (Jr, Menasha) combined for another. Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in a key Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) match-up. It will be the first conference game for both nationally ranked teams.
September 13, 2002BLUE DEVIL SOCCER OPENS CONFERENCE SEASON WITH A TIEMENOMONIE - Nellie Sivertsen (Sr, River Falls) scored two goals for UW-Stout, but UW-Whitewater matched both of them as the teams played to a 2-2 overtime tie, Friday, Sept. 13 at Nelson Field. Sivertsen opened the scoring, taking a cross from Rachel Anderson (So, Victoria, Minn) only four minutes into the game. The Warhawks Dani Daggett scored unassisted in the 13th minute of the game for the tie. The Warhawks (2-2-1, 1-1-1) took the lead early in the second half, when Jamie McLaughlin scored on an assist by Jacie Hein in the 48th minute off the throw-in. Sivertsen knotted the score in the 66th minute when she was perched in front of the net, crossing the ball past the goalkeeper, getting assists from Rosa Cambray (Jr, Delavan) and Heidi Schultz (Fr, River Falls). The Warhawks attacked hard in the overtime, taking seven shots, while limiting Stout (3-1-1, 0-0-1) to only two shots in extra time. The Blue Devils had opportunities late in the second overtime, getting three corner kicks, but could not convert. Whitewater outshot Stout, 17-15. Stout's Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac) recorded eight saves in goal, while giving up her first goals of the season to stretch her record to 3-0-1. The Warhawks' Jamie Carollo had seven saves. Stout is off until they travel to UW-Eau Claire, Saturday, Sept. 21. September 10, 2002STOUT CONTROLS ST. MARY'S AS THEY SHUTOUT CARDINALSMENOMONIE - UW-Stout spent the majority of the game in the St. Mary's zone as the Blue Devils went on to a 2-0 win over the Cardinals Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Nelson Field - and it could have been a much bigger point spread. The Blue Devils (3-1) completely dominated the Cardinals (0-3), who are yet to score a goal on the season, out-shooting St. Mary's 40-2 and clanking at least five shots off the metal of the goal. Stout got all of their scoring in a four minute span in the second period. Stacy Normington (Sr, Delavan) scored her first goal of the season when she stole the throw-in and booted it home in the 47th minute. Diane Ehlen (Jr, Bloomington, Minn) notched her first goal of the year three minutes later when she worked a corner kick that deflected off a defender and scored from inside the goalkeeper's box. Blue Devils goalkeeper Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac) recorded her third consecutive shutout of the year to go 3-0, but had little work this evening, getting only one save, that coming off a direct kick. The third straight shutout sets a new school record. September 10, 2002MELISSA BALLWEG NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEKMENOMONIE - UW-Stout goalkeeper Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac/Sauk Prairie HS) put together 180 minutes of scoreless ball to start off her season at 2-0 and was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defensive soccer player of the week.
