May 2, 2003SUPERIOR PUSHES BLUE DEVILS INTO THE OFFSEASONPLATTEVILLE - UW-Superior's Sarah Tarasewicz proved to be the force that eliminated UW-Stout from the WIAC Tournament as the Yellowjackets defeated the Blue Devils, 5-3, Friday, May 2 in the second round of the tournament. Tarasewicz, the 'Jackets' lead-off hitter, reached on error in the first inning and then was driven home. The catcher came back to drive in a run in the second, then scored from third when she was part of a double steal. Superior (16-18) added a run in the third and Tarasewicz put the cap on her performance with a lead-off home run in the fourth inning. Stout (17-20) managed to stay in the game, scoring twice in the third inning to pull to within 3-2. Jamie Gorges (So, New London) drove in two runs on her single up the middle. Gorges drove in Stout's only other run of the game when she singled in the fifth. The loss, coupled with a 13-inning loss earlier in the day, eliminated Stout from the tournament.
May 2, 2003BLUE DEVILS FALL IN 13 INNINGS TO UW-EAU CLAIRE, 1-0 PLATTEVILLE - UW-Stout's Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) pitched more than 12 innings of shutout ball, but 13 was not her lucky number as UW-Eau Claire got the game-winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning for a 1-0 win over the Blue Devils in the opening game of the WIAC tournament.Eau Claire's (16-20) Brenda Westerman led off the 13th with a walk, was moved to second on a Jannah Grinnel's groundout, then scored with two outs when Gerilyn Berens drove the ball up the middle to end the game. Donley struck out three and scattered five hits. Eau Claire's Kim Czapla allowed six hits and struck out nine to get the win. Heather Novalany (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) was 2-for-4 for Stout (17-19). Thirteen innings is the most innings a Stout team has ever played in a single game. The game last two-hours, 27-minutes. April 29, 2003ERIN O'CONNELL NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE - UW-Stout first baseman Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) put on an offensive show last week and for her efforts was named the WIAC softball player of the week.In eight games last week, O'Connell hit .714 (15-of-21) with nine runs scored, two doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 16 RBI for a slugging percentage of 2.000 percent. May 4, 2003BLUE DEVILS CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH LOSSES AT SCHOLASTICA DULUTH, Minn - UW-Stout closed out the 2003 campaign by dropping both ends of a twinbill to St. Scholastica, losing 9-3, 3-2, Sunday, May 4 at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn.Joe Huiting (Jr, Little Chute) put together another strong performance on the hill for the Blue Devils (10-29) in the nightcap, scattering five hits and allowing three runs, two unearned. Huiting struck out two and walked two. The Saints (35-8) scored single runs off Huiting in the first three innings, but no more after that. Stout scored their only runs of the game in the third inning on a an RBI single by Tim Nielson (Fr, Rosemount, Minn). Nielson would score moments later on an error. Brian Bosch (Sr, White Bear Lake, Minn) went 3-for-3, and Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) was 2-for-4, as Stout outhit the Saints, 7-5. In the opener, after Stout took a 1-0 lead in the first on Brock Meyer's (Sr, Lyle, Minn) RBI single to left, the Saints rocked Stout for four first inning runs. Stout sliced the lead in half in the second when Matt Hoeft (Sr, Elk Mound) tripled, then was brought home by Bosch. Scholastica scored single runs in the second and third and three in the sixth. Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) racked up an RBI single in the seventh, driving in Hoeft. Meinertz, Hoeft and Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) each went 2-for-3. Stout was outhit, 13-9. May 3, 2003BLUE DEVILS LEAVE IT TO BIEVER TO SEAL FIRST GAME WIN MENOMONIE - Heads started turning as he left the bullpen. Next the chuckles, then the shout "Here comes the ace."UW-Stout catcher Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) came to the pitchers' mound with two outs in the top of the seventh, with Stout leading Concordia University of Wisconsin, 6-4. After four years behind the plate, Biever was brought into the spotlight for his final home series to get the last out. The Blue Devils (10-27) went on to sweep the doubleheader, 6-4, 13-7, in the final home series of the season. Biever, who had not pitched in a game since he was 15-years-old, looked to do just that as he got Jeremy Ebert to hit a grounder, but an error allowed Ebert to first. Now, Biever would have to work out of the stretch, and he got the next batter to hit into a fielder's choice, giving Biever the save and the 6-4 win. Jim Foreman (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) gave Stout a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run double. Concordia (13-19) got on the board in the fifth with a single run. Stout answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, on RBI doubles by Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) and Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls), an RBI triple by Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) and an RBI single by Biever. Concordia got to Stout for three runs in the sixth, sending starting pitcher Nick Jones (Jr, La Crosse) to the dugout, as well as relief pitcher Dan Yudchitz (So, Stevens Point). Pat Gieseke (Jr, Courtland, Minn) gave up a walk, then struck out the next batter looking. Gieseke got a ground out and strikeout in the seventh before giving way to Biever.Jones picked up the win, striking out six, but was charged with all four earned runs. In the second game, Biever played the final home game of his career to the hilt, hitting a solo home run in his final at-bat in the bottom of the sixth. Stout feasted all afternoon on Falcon pitching, grinding out 19 hits in the second contest. Matt Hoeft (Sr, Elk Mound), also playing his final home game as a Blue Devil, led the offensive charge, going 3-for-5 with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Hoeft finished the game with five RBI. All but one starter got a hit. Jon Kroening (Jr, Ladysmith) went 4-for-5, while Nick Ziegler (Fr, Plymouth) was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Biever was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Riek was also 2-for-3. Jason Kuehn (So, Augusta) got the show going for Stout with a two-run double in the bottom of the first as Stout scored in every inning but the third and had at least one hit in each inning. April 30, 2003BLUE DEVILS SWEEP A PAIR OF GAMES AT SUPERIORSUPERIOR - Brian Bosch (Sr, White Bear Lake, Minn) made the best in his chance at redemption and Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) hit his second grand slam of the season as UW-Stout had to work overtime in the first game, then didn't need all of regulation in the second game as the Blue Devils swept a pair of games at UW-Superior, Wednesday, April 30. Stout (8-27, 6-17) closed out their conference portion of the schedule by taking an 8-6, 10-inning affair in the first game, then needed only seven innings to win an 11-1 nightcap. Bosch committed an error in the bottom of the ninth inning of the opener that allowed Superior (5-22, 3-15) to tie the score at 6-6. But after Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) opened the 10th with a lead-off triple, Bosch delivered a single to left field, driving Biever home which would be the eventual game winning hit. Corey Endreas (Jr, Spencer) came on to run for Bosch and was brought home by Brock Meyer's (Sr, Lyle, Minn) double. Meyer had a good day at the plate, going 4-for-8 with four RBI, smacking two doubles and triple. The contest was a game of rallies for Stout, which fell behind, 4-1, after a three-run fourth inning by Superior. Back-to-back doubles by Matt Hoeft (Sr, Elk Mound) and Meyer opened up a two-run seventh inning to pull Stout to within 4-3. Meyer drove in Hoeft and Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) drove in Meyer. Stout took a 6-4 lead in the eighth with three runs, two by Meinertz's triple. Meinertz scored from third on Riek's suicide squeeze. Joe Huiting (Jr, Little Chute) earned the win in long relief, pitching 5.2 innings and recording nine strikeouts - a Stout season high. Huiting allowed no walks and scattered eight hits and two runs, but only one earned. In the nightcap, pitcher Matt Christman (Fr, Milwaukee) allowed one unearned run in the first inning and went on to strike out seven, pitching six innings, as the 'Jackets were held scoreless the rest of the way. On the day, four Stout pitchers combined to strikeout 19 batters in 17 innings. Stout answered that single run in a big way in the second inning. With two outs, Justin Kuehn (So, Augusta) drove in Nick Ziegler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) for the first run. Stout loaded the bases and Meinertz delivered the grand slam and the rout was on. Stout added three runs in the fifth, a single run in the sixth and closed the door with two in the seventh, when Meyer tripled in a run and Meinertz doubled in the other. Meinertz was 3-for-5 with five RBI in the game. Biever went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Kuehn was 3-for-4 with two RBI. April 29, 2003BLUE DEVILS BREAK LOSING SKID IN SPLIT WITH VITERBO LA CROSSE - Nick Jones (Jr, La Crosse) scattered eight hits and went the distance to pick up the win in his hometown as UW-Stout broke an 11-game losing skid in downing Viterbo University 10-2 in the first game of non-conference doubleheader in La Crosse. The Blue Devils lost the second game, 5-2.Stout (6-27) held to a tight 3-2 lead until Nick Ziegler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) hit a three-run home run - his first collegiate round tripper - to push Stout to a 6-2 lead. Jones did the rest - although he did get three more runs in the top of the seventh - to shut down the V-Hawks (26-28) the rest of the way. Jones struck out six and walked only two in the seven inning affair. Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) added a solo home run. In the second game, Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) went 3-for-4 at the plate, but it wouldn't be enough as Stout smacked out seven hits but could only get runners across in the first and seventh innings. Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) brought Meinertz home in the first. Viterbo tied the score in the first, then took the led with run in the fourth, doubled it with two runs in the fifth and added another run in the sixth. Meinertz's double drove in Stout's only other run in the seventh. Riek had a triple in the game, but was left stranded. John Englund (Fr, Lakeville, Minn) allowed only six hits, but was tagged for four runs, three earned as Stout committed three errors.

April 10, 2003UW-STOUT ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME MEMBER PASSES AWAY APPLETON - A member of the UW-Stout Athletic Hall of Fame passed away, April 10. Jack Notebaart, 97, who was inducted into the Stout Hall of Fame in 1981, died at his home in Appleton.Notebaart was a pioneer on the football field as a wide receiver, when the forward pass was used sparingly. Graduating from what was then Stout Institute in 1929 with a degree in industrial education, Notebaart pulled down numbers that would raise eyebrows still today. In 1927 against Superior, Notebaart hauled in 15 passes, a record that would stand until 1994 when Kevin Wiese caught 16 passes. Later in that season, Notebaart gained 157 yards receiving, a mark that stood until the wild passing days of the late 1980s when it was surpassed several times. Following graduation, Notebaart taught printing at the Appleton Vocational and Adult School for 42 years, retiring from what is now Fox Valley Technical College in 1971. A Professional Golfers Association (PGA) member, Notebaart worked as a golf pro at Peninsula State Park Golf Course and at the New London Country Club. For more than 25 years, Notebaart taught golf at the Appleton YMCA and was a high school basketball and football official. Notebaart was born Dec. 5, 1905 in Antwerp, Belgium. The family emigrated to the United States in 1908, resided in Chicago for three years, and then St. Paul, Minn., where Jack graduated from high school in 1924. He participated in football, basketball and baseball and received his high school's most outstanding athlete award. He attended the University of St. Thomas before transferring to Stout, where he was all-league in both football and basketball. Notebaart was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, the Professional Golfers Association of America and the Wisconsin Section of the Association. He was one of the founders, life member, and former board member of the Appleton Junior Chamber of Commerce, a life member of the Appleton Curling Club, and a life member of the Appleton Elks Lodge #337. Jack was married to Eileen Zuehlke on June 16, 1934, sharing 58 years together before her death on February 6, 1993. Survivors include a daughter Barbara (Richard) Nehls of Madison and their children Jennifer (Paul) Snyder, Dr. Sarah Rikkers, and Paul Nehls; a son John Notebaart of Appleton and his children Ross and Katie Notebaart; a brother Edward (Lois) Notebaart of North St. Paul; a sister-in-law Gert Notebaart of Red Wing, Minn; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Jack was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers all of North St. Paul. Updated: May 5, 2003 |
