April 27, 2003BLUE DEVILS WIN ONE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH MENOMONIE - It took UW-Stout all weekend to win a game at the WIAC Cluster Tournament, and then they needed to go to the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up a 5-4 win over UW-Stevens Point, Sunday, April 27 at Wakanda Park. But that win didn't come without controversy. After Stout had taken a 3-0 lead on the strength of two Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) home runs, the Pointers surged ahead with four runs in the sixth inning. Stout (17-18, 7-9) answered back to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth inning when, with runners on second and third, Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley) hit a one-out sacrifice fly to center field to score Heather Novalany (So, Cottage Grove, Minn). That's where the controversy came in. A Blue Devil runner on second base left before the catch, and was thrown out at home. Stevens Point appealed the call by throwing to second base, then questioned whether Novalany's run should count. Had the Pointers thrown directly to second base, rather than home for the play at the plate, the runner would have been called out, negating Novalany's run because it would have been the third out. After the rule book was brought out, the matter was cleared up with the score tied at 4-4. The Pointers stranded runners at second and third in their half of the seventh inning. Stout's Scooter Aspen (Jr, Eau Claire) led off the inning with a single to right and was brought home by Kaela Wold's (So, Altoona) double to right center to give Stout a 5-4 win. Earlier in the day, Stout dropped a 6-4 decision to UW-Platteville. Stout drew first blood with a run in the first, but the Pioneers, who went on to win the regular season conference title, added two runs in their half of the inning, the took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. The Blue Devils tied the score in the fifth when Caswell drove in two runs. The Pioneers were not to be denied, coming back with three runs in their half of the fifth. O'Connell added a solo home run in the sixth. On the day, O'Connell hit three home runs and is currently tied with Angie Pinnow for most career home runs with 17. O'Connell has 15 home runs on the season. Stout will next compete at the WIAC Tournament, May 2-4 at Platteville. Stout earned the No. 5 seed and will play fourth seeded UW-Eau Claire, Friday, May 2 at 1 p.m. April 26, 2003BLUE DEVILS HAVE ROUGH DAY AT CLUSTER TOURNEY MENOMONIE - It was almost feast or famine for the UW-Stout softball team, but either way, the result was still the same - two losses at the WIAC Cluster Tournament, Saturday, April 26 at Wakanda Park.Stout dropped a 7-6 decision to UW-Oshkosh in the first game, then was tipped, 1-0, by UW-Whitewater in their second game of the day. The Blue Devils (16-17, 6-8) jumped all over the Titans early, scoring three runs in the top of the first on the strength of a two-run home run by Kaela Wold (So, Altoona). The Titans pulled to within one with a two-run outburst in the second. Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) drove in a run with a triple in the fifth. The Titans took a 5-4 lead in the fifth, then added to that with two runs in the sixth.Stout put together a rally in the seventh, started by Kim Caswell's (Jr, Stanley) second career home run. O'Connell doubled in another run, but that would be it for Stout. Stout would rack up 12 hits, but committed five errors. The Blue Devils connected for only two hits against Whitewater, and committed three errors, including one that lead to the games only run in the top of the first. Stout stranded two in the second in their only series scoring threat. April 23, 2003BLUE DEVILS RECORD SWEEP OVER BLUGOLDS, 5-4, 2-0 EAU CLAIRE - It took to the final conference doubleheader of the season, but UW-Stout finally picked up their first sweep of the season, downing UW-Eau Claire, 5-4, 2-0, Wednesday, April 23 at Carson Park in Eau Claire.Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) notched both wins, coming on in relief in the first game, and scattering seven hits, but shutting Eau Claire out as a starter in the second game. Stout (16-15, 6-6) trailed 4-2 heading into the fifth when the Blue Devils exploded for three runs on three hits. Scooter Aspen (Jr, Eau Claire) drove in a run on her fielder's choice, then Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) drove in a run on a ground out to second. Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) singled in Aspen for the final run of the inning. Stout took an early lead when Wold slammed out a two-run home run in the first. Eau Claire (12-18, 6-6) answered back with the long ball in the third. Emily Planert opened the inning with a solo home run and Beth Stewart smacked a two-run shot. Wold went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Heather Novalany (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) was 2-for-3. In the nightcap, another Wold double drove in a run in the third and Jamie Gorges (So, New London) hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth to drive in O'Connell, who had tripled. Aspen was 2-for-4, but the Blugolds out-hit Stout, 7-6. Eau Claire stranded eight runners, including runners at second and third in the second inning. Donley (13-4) recorded three strikeouts and no walks in the second game, and did the same in the opener. April 21, 2003ERIN O'CONNELL POUNDS OUT FOUR HOME RUNS ON THE DAY MENOMONIE - If records are made to be broken, then UW-Stout's Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) did just that as the Blue Devils split a pair of games with UW-Superior, Monday, April 21 at Wakanda Park. The Yellowjackets took the opener, 4-1, but Stout came back in the second game to take a 9-0, five-inning win as O'Connell hit three home runs in three at-bats for seven runs batted in. On the day, O'Connell hit four home runs - her solo home run in the first game was Stout's lone run - and set a Stout single game record for most home runs and tied the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record for most home runs in a game (Beth Shaw, Platteville, 2001). With 12 home runs on the season, O'Connell broke the WIAC single season record of 10 set by Jill Schoenike of UW-Eau Claire in 1999. Her solo home run in the first game tied the Stout single season record, and her first home run of the second game - a three run shot to right center - broke the Stout record of nine set by Angie Pinnow in 2000. Pinnow holds the school career record with 17. Three of O'Connell's home runs went into left field where a stiff north wind of upwards of 25 mph was blowing across towards home plate. In the nightcap, O'Connell blasted a three-run shot in the first inning, bringing home Scooter Aspen (Jr, Eau Claire) and Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) to take a 3-0 lead.Stout (14-15, 4-6) added four more runs in the second inning when Wold doubled in Aspen and Bethany Johnson (Fr, Black River Falls). O'Connell homered home Wold in the next at-bat. O'Connell got the eventual game ending home run in the fourth inning, driving in Wold. Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) got the win, scattering two hits, a lead off single in the first inning and a one out single in the fourth. In the opener, the Yellowjackets (8-10, 2-6) scored on a passed ball in the first inning, then scored another in the fourth inning. O'Connell answered back with her solo shot in the bottom of the fifth. Stout loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, but O'Connell's ground out to shortstop ended the inning. Superior tacked on two runs in the seventh to take a 4-1 lead. Stout stranded two in the bottom half of the inning. Stout recorded six hits in the first game, but no batter got more than a single hit. In the second game, Wold matched O'Connell in hitting percentage, going 3-for-3 and scored three runs and drove in two.
April 27, 2003BLUE DEVILS HANG WITH TITANS IN SECOND GAME OSHKOSH - UW-Oshkosh made the sweep complete by taking a pair of games, 14-4, 12-10, over UW-Stout, Sunday, April 27, at Oshkosh. The Titans (27-2, 13-1) had seven consecutive batters reach base in a six-run third inning to break open the opener. The Blue Devils (5-26, 4-17) halved the score with three runs in the fourth inning as Nick Ziegler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn), Joe Miller (Fr, Chippewa Falls) and Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) each drove in a run. But that would be about it for Stout as Oshkosh scored two in the fifth, five in the sixth and one in the seventh as the game was ended by the 10-run rule. Stout tacked on an unearned run in the sixth. In the second game, Stout used two Oshkosh errors to score three runs in the eighth to forge a 10-10 tie in the inning. Oshkosh scored two runs in the top of the ninth on a Vince Mancusco double. Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls) went 4-for-5 with three RBI in the game. On the day, Maier went 6-for-8. Stout will be at Viterbo University, Tuesday, April 29, and will close WIAC play at UW-Superior, Wednesday, April 30. April 26, 2003BLUE DEVILS LOSE TWO TO OSHKOSH, 6-2, 14-6 OSHKOSH - UW-Stout dropped two games to the high-flying UW-Oshkosh baseball team, 6-2, 14-6, Saturday, April 26 at Oshkosh. In the opener, the Blue Devils (5-24, 4-15) took a 2-0 lead, but couldn't hold it as Oshkosh cut the score in half with a single run in the third inning, then tacked on three runs in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth. Stout outhit the Titans, 7-5, and the Titans (25-2, 11-1) committed four errors, but it didn't help the Blue Devils, who walked nine Titan batters. In the nightcap, Oshkosh jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but Stout cut the lead to 8-5 with a three-run seventh inning, with Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee), Nick Ziegler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) and Brock Meyer (Sr, Lyle, Minn) each driving in a run. Stout added a run in the eighth, but the Titans put a lock on the game with a six-run eighth. April 23, 2003BLUE DEVILS DROP TWO AT UW-LA CROSSE, 5-3, 6-2 LA CROSSE - UW-La Crosse scored all of their runs early in both games and went on to take both ends of a conference doubleheader over UW-Stout, Wednesday, April 23 in La Crosse. The Eagles took decisions of 5-3, 6-2.The Eagles scored two runs each in the first and third innings of the first contest, added another in the fourth, then held off a Stout rally. The Blue Devils (5-22, 4-13) put their only three runs on the board int the sixth inning. Brock Meyer (Sr, Lyle, Minn) doubled in Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee). Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) doubled in Meyer and Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) for the final two runs. Stout loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but came up empty. La Crosse (11-17, 7-7) threatened in the eighth, loading the bases, but relief pitchers Matt Hoeft (Sr, Elk Mound) and Dan Yudchitz (So, Stevens Point) worked out of the jam. Biever was 2-for-3 in the game. The Eagles scored all six of their runs of the second game across the first three innings, getting three runs in the first off a Casey Bablitch home run, one in the second and two in the third. The Blue Devils got their runs in the second on a triple by Biever that brought in Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls) and Jim Foreman (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn). Maier was 2-for-4, while Foreman was 2-for-3 in the game.
