STEVENS POINT -
UW-Stout won one and lost one in the second day of the WIAC Cluster Tournament at UW-Stevens Point, Sunday, April 13, to go 2-2 at the two-day event.

The Blue Devils used the long ball to dispatch UW-Whitewater, 7-4, in the first game of the day, then lost, 1-0, to UW-Platteville.

The Altoona Railroader express provided the power for Stout in the win over Whitewater. BLUE DEVILS SPLIT IN FIRST DAY OF WIAC CLUSTER TOURNEY

STEVENS POINT -
In an inning that didn't seem to be going anywhere, the UW-Stout softball team made the best of their at-bats as they went on to a 9-4 win over UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 12 in the first day of the WIAC Cluster Tournament at Stevens Point. In the second game of the day, Stout lost 4-2 to UW-Stevens Point.

Stout (9-10, 0-2) struck first in the opener when Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) tripled in Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley), who reached on a lead-off single. But La Crosse (14-5, 3-1) wasted no time coming back, scoring the equalizer in the bottom of the inning.

BLUE DEVIL RALLY FALLS SHORT, STOUT SPLITS WITH PLATTEVILLE

MENOMONIE -
After clubbing UW-Platteville, 14-3 in seven innings in the opener, UW-Stout needed a ninth inning rally to catch the Pioneers in the second game. But the rally fell one run short as the Blue Devils bowed out, 9-8, Sunday, April 13 at Nelson Field.

Trailing 9-3 heading in the ninth, Stout (5-16, 4-7) scored five runs. Nick Ziegler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) cracked out a bases loaded single, driving in two runs to start the scoring parade. Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) scored on a passed ball, Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) doubled in a run and Jason Kuehn (So, Osseo) singled in a run up the middle. Stout stranded runners at first and third to end the inning.

Platteville (7-13, 1-7) jumped all over Stout pitching for two runs in the first, third and fifth and added three runs in the fourth as Stout committed five errors in the game.

It was a different story in the first game as every Stout starter got at least one hit. Riek went 4-for-5 with a home run in the first inning and drove in three runs in the game. Biever also went 4-for-5 with an RBI.

Jim Foreman (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) collected a three run home run in a six run third inning that broke the game open. Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) stroked out a two-out solo home run in the fifth that ignited a three-run stanza. Nick Ohman's (So, Glenwood City) double drove in two runs in the inning and he finished the game with three RBI.

Jon Severson (So, Hayfield, Minn) went the distance for the Blue Devils to get his first win of the season along with his first complete game. Severson scattered three hits, walking only two and striking out one.

Stout will be at UW-Whitewater, Thursday, April 17 and Friday, April 18.

MEINERTZ'S BLASTS GIVE BLUE DEVILS SWEEP OVER PLATTEVILLE

MENOMONIE - Greg Meinertz (So, LaCrosse)
had game-winning hits in both contests to lift UW-Stout to a sweep over UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 12, in a WIAC baseball contest at Menomonie.

Meinertz cracked out a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth to lift Stout to a 7-6 opening game win, then hit a grand slam home run in the seventh inning and Stout (4-15, 3-6) hung on for an 11-10 second game win.

On the afternoon, Meinertz went 6-for-10, with an RBI in the first game and five in the second.

On the mound, Ryan Jensen (Sr, Cylinder, Iowa) recorded the win the first game, allowing only one hit, then came on in the second game to get the save, again allowing only one hit.

Meinertz's heroics in the second game came after Stout fell behind, 7-1, allowing five Platteville (6-12, 0-6) runs in the second and two in the third.

Stout nailed a five-run inning in the sixth, with single RBIs by Matt Hoeft (Sr, Elk Mound), Jon Kroening (Jr, Ladysmith), and Meinertz and a two-run single by Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville).

Stout jumped out for five runs again, this time in the seventh as the Blue Devils loaded the bases. Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) was hit by a pitch, bringing in a run and setting the table for Meinertz, who delivered the blast to right field, his second career home run.

The Pioneers were not through, as they scratched and clawed for three runs in the top of the eighth, with David Reifenberger's single acounting for two runs. Jensen came on, only to have his first batter reach on an error, but the lead runner was cut down at home attempting to score on the play for the third out. Jensen allowed the lead runner in the ninth a single, then got three straight fly ball to end the game.

In the first game, Meinertz's single in the bottom of the ninth scored Corey Endreas (Jr, Spencer) from second to give Stout the opener win. Endreas entered the game as a pinch runner for Brock Meyer (Sr, Lyle, Minn), who led off the inning with a single to right field. Endreas moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Riek.

Stout opened the scoring in the first when Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls) drove in Meinertz, who doubled to lead off the inning.

The Pioneers came back with a five-run second inning that was aided by two Stout errors.

Stout answered with a three-run third inning. Kroening doubled in Riek and Maier drove in two runs.

From there on, it was nickel and dime scoring. Platteville scored a run in the fifth, and Stout scored a single run on an Ohman RBI. The Blue Devils knotted the score at 6 apiece in the sixth inning, with Riek driving in a run.

BLUE DEVILS COME UP JUST SHORT TO EAGLES IN DOUBLEHEADER

MENOMONIE -
Trailing by two runs, UW-Stout left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth of the second game of a doubleheader with UW-La Crosse, losing, 6-4, Wednesday, April 9 in Menomonie. The Eagles won the first game, 7-3.

On the strength of a four-run fifth inning, the Eagles (4-12, 2-2 WIAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Stout battled back with a single run in the fifth as Brock Meyer's (Sr, Lyle, Minn) sacrifice fly plated Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls).

Stout (2-15, 1-6) racked up three runs in the sixth inning on RBIs by Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee), Maier and Jason Kuehn (So, Osseo).

The Blue Devils stranded two runners in the seventh and eight innings, and filled the bases with one out in the ninth, only to go down.

In the opener, Stout jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Biever drove in Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) with a triple, then came home on Jim Foreman's (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) single to left.

LaCrosse tied the score with solo run sin the third and fifth, and took the lead in the seventh with five runs, three unearned. Foreman drove in a run in the eighth for the Blue Devils, which outhit LaCrosse, 12-8, in the game.

Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) was 6-for-9 on the day, 4-for-4 in the opener.

Stout used all 14 of their pitchers in the two contests, electing to throw one pitcher per inning.

POINTERS TAKE TRIPLE HEADER FROM BLUE DEVILS

MENOMONIE -
UW-Stevens Point took three conference games from UW-Stout, Monday, April 7, at Menomonie in a rare tripleheader. The Pointers snagged wins of 10-4, 6-5, 10-3.

The Pointers (12-2-1, 5-0 WIAC) led from start to finish in the first game, but had to overcome Stout (2-13, 1-4) leads in the final two games.

In the opener, the Pointers opened up with a three run first, and tacked on two more runs in the third. Joe Waksmonski had a big game, hitting two-run homers in the first and the fifth to help blow the game open.

Stout's Jim Foreman (Jr, Apple Valley, Minn) broke up a no-hitter in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run blast to cut the lead to 10-2. Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls) doubled in two runs in the fifth.

In the middle game, Stout scored in the first when Jake Riek (Jr, Boyceville) scored on an error and Maier drove in Foreman to give Stout a 2-0 lead. The Pointers halved the lead with a run scoring double by Matt Peterson in the second. Stout moved the lead to 4-1 when Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) tripled in Jason Kuehn (So, Osseo), then scored on a error.

Stevens Point chipped away at the lead, putting up single runs in the fourth and fifth to pull to within 4-3. A double by Maier gave Stout a 5-3 lead in the fifth.

The Pointers took the lead in the sixth inning. Waksmonski reached on a lead-off error, then came in on Matt Peetz's home run to tie the score at five all. Matt Polomis hit a run scoring double for what would prove to be the final 6-5 score.

In the final game, the Blue Devils scored two unearned runs in the second inning, then added another run when Nick Ziegler (Fr, Plymouth, Minn) plated Greg Meinertz (So, LaCrosse) with a single to right field.

Jones put the Pointers right back into the game with a two-run shot in the third inning. The Pointers took control in the fifth inning with a six-run explosion that saw 11 Stevens Point players to the plate. The Pointers added two more in the sixth.

On the day, Stevens Point notched seven home runs.

The games were originally scheduled to be played April 5-6, but snow covered the field after a Friday, April 4 storm. Stout players and staff cleared the field over the weekend, but it was not playable until today.
