GYMNASTICS
The Blue Devils wrapped up the 2003 season at the NCGA Championships were Tiffany Reber (Sr, Mantorville, Minn) earned All-America honors in the all-around and Cassie Johnston (Fr, Albertville, Minn) placed fourth on the balance beam to also earn All-America honors.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The Blue Devils will attempt to open the outdoor track & field season, Saturday, April 5 at the Norse Relays at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Last week: The Blue Devils' meet at UW-Stevens Point was cancelled

FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
The Blue Devils (7-5) will open the northern portion of their schedule, Tuesday, April 1 by hosting St. Scholastica. Stout is scheduled to play four games at the Grinnell College tournament, April 5-6. Last week: Stout went 5-5 on their spring break trip to Kissimmee, Fla.

BASEBALL
The Blue Devils (1-9) jump right back into the fire this weekend, when they travel to Iowa to play two games against Upper Iowa, Saturday, March 28 and a single nine-inning game, Sunday, March 29 against Wartburg College. Last week: Stout picked up their first win of the season, a 5-4 win at Upper Iowa in the second game of a double header, Saturday, March 29. Stout lost the first game, 4-3, and were defeated 20-12 by Wartburg, Sunday, March 30. Player of the week: Seth Maier, Fr, Park Falls. Pitcher of the week: Jon Severson, So, Hayfield, Minn.

TENNIS
The Blue Devils will be at Hamline University, Friday, April 4. Last week: The Blue Devils opened their non-traditional part of the schedule with a 9-0 loss at St. Mary's, March 27.

CASSIE JOHNSTON, TIFFANY REBER EARN ALL-AMERICA HONORS

EAU CLAIRE - Cassie Johnston (Fr, Albertville, Minn) and Tiffany Reber (Sr, Mantorville) earned All-America honors at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships, Saturday, March 29 at UW-Eau Claire.

Johnston finished fourth on the balance beam, scoring a 9.475 to bring her two-day total to 18.975. The top six individual performers earn All-America honors.

Reber finished eighth in the all-around with a score of 35.75. The top 10 all-arounders earn All-America status.

Johnston just missed out on honors on the floor exercise, placing in a tie for seventh. She scored a 9.425 to total a 19.075. Rhian Paulson (Fr, Stillwater, Minn) finished seventh on the uneven bars, scoring a 9.125 to bring her two-total to 18.275.

Reber placed 15th on the vault.

March 28, 2003

JOHNSTON, PAULSON, REBER ADVANCE TO NCGA FINALS

EAU CLAIRE - Cassie Johnston (Fr, Albertville, Minn), Tiffany Reber (Sr, Mantorville) and Rhian Paulson (Fr, Stillwater) advanced to the final day of competition at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships, Friday, March 28 at UW-Eau Claire.

Johnston advanced in two exercises, placing second on the balance beam with a scored of 9.50, and is currently ninth in the floor exercise in tying a school record with a score of 9.650. Johnston tied the school record set earlier this season by Reber. Johnston also placed 26th on the uneven bars (8.625). The top 12 advance to the finals.

Paulson advanced in the uneven bars, currently tied for fifth place with a score of 9.15. Paulson was 26th on the vault (9.175).

Reber is currently tied for 12th on the vault with a score of 9.175. Reber placed eighth in the all-around with a score of 35.75. Reber was 28th on the bars (8.575), 50th on the beam (8.40) and 14th on the floor (9.60), and just missed the cut.

Helen Pansch (Fr, Zimmerman, Minn) placed 47th on the floor exercise with a score of 9.025.

UW-La Crosse won their third consecutive NCGA national team championship. SUNY-Courtland was second. The NCGA championships will conclude Saturday, March 29 with the individual championships competition scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

BLUE DEVILS JUMP INTO FULL-BLOWN SCHEDULE

MENOMONIE -
UW-Stout opens the northern portion of their schedule this week by hosting St. Scholastica, Tuesday, April 1 at 3 p.m. The game will be held at either Wakanda Park or Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

Stout will be at the Grinnell College tournament where they will face Minnesota-Morris and William Penn, Saturday, April 5 and Nebraska Wesleyan and Grinnell College, Sunday, April 6. Stout may complete a March 9 game with Nebraska Wesleyan that was called because of time reservation after five innings.

BLUE DEVILS GO DOWN IN A SLUGFEST TO WARTBURG

WAVERLY, Iowa - In an afternoon slugfest, UW-Stout fell, 20-12, to Wartburg College, Sunday, March 30, in Waverly, Iowa.

Stout pounded out 16 hits, but surrendered 26 hits in the nine-inning contest.

Stout's Seth Meier (Fr, Park Falls) led Stout's hit parade, going 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. After flying out in his first at-bat, Maier drove in at least one run in each of his final four at-bats.

Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) went 3-for-5 for the Blue Devils (1-9).

Greg Torgerson led Wartburg's attack with two home runs.

Wartburg (15-4-1) scored three runs in first, but Stout took the lead with two runs in the second and three in the third. Wartburg pounded out six runs in the third and never trailed after that.

Stout will open WIAC play Wednesday, April 2 when they host UW-Superior at 1 p.m. at Nelson Field.

BLUE DEVILS PICK UP FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

FAYETTE, Iowa - By the skin of their teeth, the UW-Stout baseball team picked up their first win of the season, as they downed Upper Iowa University, 5-4, in the second game of a double header. Earlier, the Blue Devils allowed four runs in the bottom of the seventh to lose, 4-3, Saturday, March 29 in Fayette, Iowa.

Matt Christman (Fr, Milwaukee) pitched four innings, allowing two runs and three hits, to record the win. John Englund (Fr, Burnsville, Minn) come on in relief to get the save, but not before surrendering two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Third baseman Greg Meinertz (So, La Crosse) made a key play in the bottom of the seventh, staying with a fly ball that started foul, then drifted back into play for the second out of the inning. Englund got the final out on a strikeout.

Seth Maier (Fr, Park Falls) hit a two-run double in the third inning to lift Stout (1-8) to a 4-0 lead. Upper Iowa scored single runs in the third and fourth. Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) scored what would prove to be the game winning run in the fifth inning when he scored from third on a passed ball.

In the opener, Jon Severson (So, Hayfield, Minn) pitched six strong innings before allowing two runners in the bottom of the seventh and Upper Iowa (6-7-1) scored four times for the win. Stout had an opportunity to send the game into extra innings when Upper Iowa's Justin Inskeep flied to left field, but Eddie Daniels beat the throw for the game winning run.

BLUE DEVILS OPEN SPRING TENNIS SEASON

WINONA, Minn -
UW-Stout opened the spring non-traditional tennis season at St. Mary's in Winona, Minn., Thursday, March 27 where the Blue Devils lost to the Cardinals, 9-0.

Amy Boyle (Jr, Racine) was the only Blue Devil not to get swept, winning her first set at No. 6 singles, then getting tipped 6-4, 11-9.

Stout will be at Hamline, Friday, April 4.
