Women's Gymnastics

March 18, 2003

Tiffany Reber (Sr, Mantorville, Minn) qualified as an all-arounder and will make her second consecutive trip to the national championships. Last year, Reber competed with UW-River Falls as an all-arounder before the Falcons dropped their gymnastics program.

Three freshmen will make their first trip to the national meet.

Rhian Paulson (Fr, Stillwater, Minn) will compete on the vault and the uneven bars, Cassie Johnston (Fr, Albertville, Minn) will compete on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise, and Helen Pansch (Fr, Zimmerman, Minn) will compete on the floor exercise.

Stout (7-5) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but had to hold off Springfield College (6-2), who rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Blue Devils scored two runs in the top of the first when Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) hit a two-run home run. Stout added two more runs in the fifth. Tasha Rosenbrook (Fr, Bloomer) hit a run-scoring single driving in Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley). O'Connell scored on a throwing error on the same play.

Springfield drove starting pitcher Molly Kraft (So, St. Louis Park, Minn) from the circle with bases loaded after a run scored. Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) allowed two unearned runs, but got the final two outs of the inning. Donley went on to allow only one more runner in the final two innings to record the save.

Caswell went 2-for-4 in the game and Rosenbrook was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Earlier in the day, Stout gave up three runs in the first inning and went on to a 6-3 loss to conference foe UW-Platteville. O'Connell hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth before Platteville came back with three runs in the top of the fifth.

Stout tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Caswell scored when a Stout player hit into a double play and O'Connell followed up with a home run.

Stout lost two games, Wednesday, March 19, falling 5-3 to Illinois Wesleyan and 2-1 to Hope College.

Stout took a 3-0 lead against Wesleyan in the first, but Wesleyan added a solo run in the third and took the lead with four runs in the sixth.

The Blue Devils went 5-5 on the trip and will host St. Scholastica, Tuesday, April 1 at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

KISSIMMEE, Fla - UW-Stout freshman pitcher Megan Donely (Fridley, Minn) recorded four strikeouts and went on to snag her first collegiate shutout as the Blue Devils blanked Wooster College, 2-0, in the second day of the the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

The win, which was a rain-shortened six inning affair, came after a 9-6 day opening loss to St. Norbert.

Donley ran her record to a perfect 3-0 on the season with the win.

Stout (4-2) opened the game with a single run in the top of the first when Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) tripled and was driven in by Jamie Gorges (So, New London). Stout added their other run in the fourth inning when Erin O'Connell (So, Altoona) tripled, then came open when a pick off attempt was thrown into left field.

Stout scored in the top of the seventh, but the rain threw out that inning.

Against St. Norbert, Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley) led off the game with a triple, but she was stranded and it became that kind of game for the Blue Devils.

After allowing the Knights a 3-0 lead in the fifth, Stout scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, but gave up two runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Stout added two runs in the seventh, but stranded two runners.

Caswell went 3-for-4 with the triple and two doubles. Tasha Rosenbrook (Fr, Bloomer) added a triple.

KISSIMMEE, Fla - UW-Stout opened their annual Florida spring break trip by splitting a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., Saturday, March 15.

The Blue Devils (3-1) lost the first game, 10-6, to Illinois Wesleyan, then came back with an 8-7, eight-inning win over Calvin College.

Tasha Rosenbrook (Fr, Bloomer) wielded the hot bat in the Calvin game, going 4-for-4 with a triple and three doubles, including the game-winner in the eighth. With the international tie-breaker in place, meaning a runner is placed on second to open the inning, Rosenbrook led off with her third double of the day to put an end to the game.

Against Illinois Wesleyan, the young Blue Devils held a 5-2 lead through the third, but gave up five runs in an error-filled fourth inning.

Kim Caswell (Jr, Stanley) and Kaela Wold (So, Altoona) both went 2-for-4 with Wold smashing out a triple.

Molly Kraft (So, St. Louis Park, Minn) threw the Illinois Wesleyan game, while Megan Donley (Fr, Fridley, Minn) picked up her second win of the season in the Blue Devils win.

JOPLIN, Mo - As if it add insult to injury, the UW-Stout baseball team lost their only senior pitcher to a probably season-ending injury on their final day of their spring break trip, Saturday, March 22 in Joplin, Mo. Ryan Jensen (Sr, Cylinder, Iowa), who was coming back after sitting out last year's season due to injury, come on in relief and possibly tore a bicep muscle, which would effectively end his season. The Blue Devils were swept by the University of Sioux Falls, 10-8, 10-3, in a change of schedule. Nick Jones (Jr, La Crosse) took the loss in the first game and Joe Huiting (Jr, Little Chute) was saddled with the second game loss.

March 20, 2003

Trinity (15-3) chased four Stout (0-5) pitchers. Trinity added one run in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth, another in the sixth and three more in the eighth. Stout committed seven errors, while Trinity had three errors.

March 18, 2003

The Bulldogs (17-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Stout (0-4) pulled to within one with two runs in the top of the fifth. Lutheran added a single run in the bottom of the inning and Stout stayed tied the score with two in the top of the sixth.

The Bulldogs took control in the bottom of the sixth with five runs, then added four runs in each the seventh and eight innings. Stout posted a single run in the seventh and two runs in the ninth.

Jon Kroening (Jr, Ladysmith) went 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs batted in. Justin Biever (Sr, South Milwaukee) was 2-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and two RBI. Brian Bosch (Sr, White Bear Lake) was 2-for-5.

Verdegan, a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) first team selection and all-defensive team choice, led Stout in rebounds with 6.3 rebounds per game. She set a school single season record for blocked shots with 38 and set a new school mark for career blocked shots, holding at 90 blocked shots in her three year career. Verdegan also led Stout in steals, snagging 65, ranking her fourth in the WIAC.

Verdegan averaged 10.7 points per contest and led the league in shooting percentage, hitting 56.7 percent from the floor (115-203).
