September 9, 2002BLUE DEVILS OPEN SEASON WITH ROAD TRIP TO THE DEEP SOUTH
UW-Stout Blue Devils (0-0, 0-0) at Millsaps College Majors (1-0, 0-0) LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils finished up the 2001 season with a 10-7 win over UW-La Crosse. Millsaps: The Majors took a 16-7 lead, then held on as Mississippi came back to score a TD with 1:36 left on the clock. Millsaps recovered the onside kick, but only 30 seconds ticked off the clock before they were forced to punt. The punt stuck Mississippi on their own 2-yard line. Mississippi picked up a first down, but Millsaps stopped them with 22 seconds remaining and no timeouts to give the Majors the win. Millsaps held a considerable lead in yardage, racking up 319 yards - 192 on the ground - to Mississippi's 176. Brandon Morris completed only four passes, but all four went to Wayne Brown for 127 yards and the opening touchdown, a 40-yard connection five minutes into the game. Chris Schiro scored on a 31 yard run near the end of the first half, and Robert Ezelle booted a 26-yard field goal in the third. Schiro finished with 71 yards rushing. Millsaps has perennial powerhouse Trinity in their league, along with Centre College, DePauw University, University of the South-Sewaunee, Rhodes College and Rose-Hulman. Majors coach Bob Tyler (48-38-3 overall, 6-4 at Millsaps) is in his second year with the Majors. Tyler has been the head coach at Mississippi State and North Texas State University. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "After watching two future opponents play (Sept. 7), we don't know how we will size up until we play. Then, going to the south, we don't want to let all of the distractions get in the way. Offensively, we seem to be improved. Our timing is better and our tall receivers are catching the ball. Our offensive line, because they are back, understand what is going on. We have eight or nine offensive linemen we can trot out there. If we are smart and don't turn the ball over, we have a chance in every game. Depthwise defensively, we are as deep as we have ever been, but we still have to go out and make the plays. "We don't have a good barometer on Millsaps yet. We know we outweigh them and they can outrun us. Our defense will play hard against them and try to lay a couple of helmets on them." SIGHTSEEING: The trip will give the Blue Devils a chance to see not only the deep south - including New Orleans - but Stout is scheduled to take in the Green Bay Packer/New Orleans Saints game Sunday, Sept. 15. "Friday and Saturday, we need to be all business," Meierkort said. "Sunday will just be fun." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; the game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com
September 8, 2002BLUE DEVIL SOCCER POSTS SECOND STRAIGHT SHUTOUTST. PAUL, Minn - UW-Stout's Melissa Ballweg (So, Sauk Prairie) posted her second straight shutout in goal as the Blue Devil women's soccer team downed Graceland College, 1-0, Sunday, Sept. 8 in St. Paul, Minn. Ballweg recorded 10 saves on the day and made Nellie Sivertsen's (Sr, River Falls) goal 18 minutes into the game standup. Sivertsen's shot came from the top of the box only minutes after Kelly Stolarczyk (Fr, Elk River, Minn) clanged a shot off the top bar. Graceland outshot Stout, 14-12, but many of their shots came towards the end of the game, said coach Dave Morris, who was pleased with the play of his charges against the scholarship team. The game was part of a two-day tournament that was scheduled at St. Catherine's, but a game with Iowa Wesleyan was cancelled when Wesleyan failed to field a team for the season. Stout will host St. Mary's Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Menomonie High School boys team, which will play at 5 p.m. against Hudson.
