February 1, 2003TITANS BOMB STOUT FROM OUTSIDE, AT THE LINE MENOMONIE - UW-Oshkosh scored from the outside and hit free throws when they needed to as they downed UW-Stout, 87-80, Saturday, Feb. 1 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Titans (16-3, 7-3 WIAC) connected on 11-of-26 3-point shots, and made 18-of-32 free throws. Stout (14-6, 6-5), in a catch-up mode, connected on only 5-of-24 long range shots and made 15-of-26 free throws. With the exception of the opening seconds, Stout never led in the game and fell behind by as many as 14 points early in the second half. The Blue Devils would manage to cut the deficit to five points, 85-80, in the waning seconds, but Oshkosh connected on 7-of-12 free throws to keep Stout at bay. Oshkosh jumped out to a 16 point first half lead with about eight minutes left in the half, but Stout got on a roll after Erin Churchill (So, Plum City), stole the ball, took it coast-to-coast, sunk the lay-up and added the free throw. Stout chipped the lead down to five points, and trailed 38-34 at halftime. The Titans opened the second half on a roll of their own, taking off on a 14-5 run. Stout slowly chipped away at the lead, but could never get closer than five points. The Titans' Kay Mikolajczak was around the basket all afternoon, scoring 18 points and pulling down 20 rebounds. Michele Rosicky led all scorers with 22 points, nailing 6-of-9 3-pointers, and Libby Sievert scored 21 points, hitting 4-of-8 treys. Stout was led by Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie), who scored 20 points. Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) scored 12, Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville) 11 and Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) 10. Stout will be at UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 5.January 29, 2003BLUE DEVILS COME BACK, BUT NOT QUITE FAR ENOUGH MENOMONIE - UW-Stout cut a 16 point UW-Stevens Point lead down to three points with 90 seconds remaining in the game, but couldn't get all the way back and lost an 82-76 decision to the defending national champions, Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Stevens Point. Trailing by 16 midway through the second half, the teams played fairly even for the next seven minutes before Stout (14-5, 6-4 WIAC) made their move and went on 10-2 run as Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie) scored five points, Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) three and Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) two during the run to pull to within 76-73. The Pointers (15-3, 7-2) did not score a basket in the final three minutes of the game, but did connect on 5-of-8 free throws down the stretch. The Pointers held a 42-35 halftime lead as Cassandra Heuer scored 15 of her 21 points in the first half and added 11 rebounds for the game. Andrea Kraemer, who hit 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch, finished the night with a game-high 23 points. The Pointers got 13 points from Amy Scott and 10 points from Amanda Nechuta. Stout was led by Tanya Halbach (Sr, Janesville) with 14 points, Jessie Herrman (Jr, Barron) with 13 and Kahl with 12. Kahl pulled down eight rebounds.
February 1, 2003BLUE DEVILS TAKEN TO TASK BY UW-OSHKOSH, 88-64 OSHKOSH - UW-Stout made 100 percent of their free throws. Big deal, it didn't buy them anything close to a win as the Blue Devils dropped an 88-64 contest at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, Feb. 1. The Blue Devils (12-7, 7-4) made all 10 of their free throw chances, but only got two trips to the line in the second half. The Titans (15-4, 6-4), who Stout defeated earlier this season, wore the varnish off the free throw line as they nailed 22-of-24 free throws, 12-of-13 in the second half. Stout trailed, 38-32, at halftime, got that lead down to as little as four points, 51-47, halfway through the second period, then saw the Titans explode out to a 20-plus point lead to conclude the game. The Titans' two leading scorers, Tim Dworak and Scott Sowinski, again scorched Stout. Dworak tossed in 23 points, while Sowinski finished with a game-high 28 points. Nate Miller added 18. Stout got 16 points from Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich), 13 points from Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn), 12 points from Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) and 11 points from Nate Severson (Fr, Eau Claire). Stout will host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.January 29, 2003POINTERS SNAP STOUT'S SEVEN GAME WINNING STREAK MENOMONIE - It was raining 3-pointers in the first half and free throws in the second half as UW-Stevens Point snapped UW-Stout's seven game winning streak, 80-59, Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Pointers (16-2, 7-2 WIAC) showered Stout (12-6, 7-3) with seven 3-pointers in the first half to run off to a 39-31 halftime lead, then left Stout standing in the dust from the line as Stevens Point buried 22-of-26 second half free throws. Stevens Point attempted no first half free throws. The loss drops Stout into a second place tie in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with UW-Whitewater, which lost, 85-75, to UW-Platteville. Stevens Point moves back into sole possession of first. The Pointers - in particular Nick Bennett, who hit all four long range missles - bombed Stout in the first half from downtown, nailing 7-of-11 treys. But Stout was no slouch from beyond the arc in the first half, connecting on 6-of-8, mostly on the strength of Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn), who hit all three of his 3-point attempts. The visitors took control in the second half, using an 11-0, three minute spurt starting around the 16 minute mark to jump out to a 22 point, 59-37 lead. The Pointers, ranked ninth in the latest D3hoops.com poll, ran the lead to as much as 31 points late in the game after Stout, ranked 25th, pulled their starters. Stout shot miserably in the second half, trying to make up the difference from the 3-point line. Stout connected on only 6-of-36 from the floor for 17 percent shooting, and finished hitting 29 percent for the game. Stevens Point shot 40 percent from the floor in the second half, but offset that by 85 percent free throw shooting. The Pointers shot 50 percent from the floor for the game. Bennett led all scorers with 27 points, followed up by 15 points by Kyle Grusczynski and 12 points by Josh Iserloth. Stout had only one player in double figures, Vandenberghe who scored 11 points. Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) was held to nine points and Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) to eight. Vandenberghe and Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) each had a team-high seven rebounds. The Pointers' Jason Kaslow had a game high nine rebounds.January 28, 2003STOUT'S CASEY CHAPMAN NAMED WIAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE - UW-Stout guard Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland/Arrowhead) continues to come off the bench to provide Stout with a scoring spark to propel the Blue Devils into a tie for first in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). For his efforts, Chapman was named the WIAC player of the week. The Blue Devils (12-5, 7-2 WIAC) won two overtime, come-from-behind road games last week to jump into first place for the first time in two decades this late in the season. Chapman scored a career-high 27 points in an 88-79 win over River Falls, Jan. 22, then followed that up with 18 points in an 85-81 win at Eau Claire, Jan. 29. On the week, Chapman scored 45 points (22.5 ppg), shooting 14-of-22 (.636) from the floor, 9-of-14 (.643) from 3-point range, 8-of-10 (.800) from the line, had seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
February 1, 2003DOTSON STOPS 47 SHOTS, BUT DEVILS STILL FALL TO SUPERIOR, 4-2 MENOMONIE - UW-Stout goalie Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn) recorded 47 saves, but the Blue Devils lost, 4-2, to defending national champion UW-Superior, Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Dotson, who had blanked the Yellowjackets in regulation in November only to fall 1-0 in overtime, stopped 19 shots in the first period, 12 in the second and 16 in the third. The Yellowjackets (16-5-2, 9-2-1) scored solo goals in the first and second period, and pierced Dotson's armor twice in the third. The Blue Devils (6-17-0, 2-10-0), trailing 2-0 in the second scored with 8:21 gone in the second when Dan Winkler (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn) scored his first of two goals. Winkler was assisted by Curt Caverly (Fr, Red Wing, Minn). Winkler tied the score only 34 seconds into the third period, punching the puck through from right in front of the goal on a short handed goal. Nate Legler (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) assisted. But the Yellowjackets got to Dotson three minutes later when Jay Dardis scored on a power play. The 'Jackets got the clincher with nine minutes left in the game when Colin Kendall scored. Superior scored their first two goals of the game within 40 seconds on the clock. Their first goal came with 21 seconds left in the first period and their second came only 19 seconds into the third. The Blue Devils will wrap up regular season play next weekend when they travel to Lake Forest College, Friday, Feb. 7 and to No. 1 ranked St. Norbert, Saturday, Feb. 8.January 31, 2003BLUE DEVILS TROUNCE SAINTS TO MOVE UP IN CONFERENCE MENOMONIE - UW-Stout scored four first period goals and Kory Mortel (So, Cottage Grove, Minn) scored two goals and had an assist as the Blue Devils pounded St. Scholastica, 6-2, Friday, Jan. 31 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Mitch Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) got the onslaught going early, scoring with an assist by Dan Riffe (Jr, Byron, Ill) four minutes into the game. Stout scored their second shorthanded goal of the season two minutes later when Kevin McLaughlin (Jr, Oakland, Calif) scored one man down, his first college goal, on an assist by Dan Winkler (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn). Scoring anyway they could, Stout (6-16-0, 2-9-0 NCHA) scored on the power play with eight minutes left in the period with a goal by Andy Jasicki (Sr, New Brighton, Minn), assisted by Nate Legler (Jr, Lakeville, Minn) and Curt Caverly (Fr, Red Wing, Minn). Mortel closed out the scoring on a goal with four minutes left in the period. Caverly picked up his second assist of the night along with Caleb Shanahan (Fr, Tulsa, Okla). With the win, Stout moved ahead of St. Scholastica in the standings, with four points to Scholastica's three. UW-Eau Claire, which also had three points, was idle tonight. The Saints (4-16-1, 1-9-1) broke onto the board seven minutes into the second period when Derek Yirkovsky scored. The Blue Devils equalized that goal when Mortel scored unassisted three minutes later. Shanahan, playing in only his third game of the season, scored his first collegiate goal midway through the period, with assists by Lewie Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) and Mortel. Scholastica added the final goal of the game 30 seconds into the third period. Blue Devil goalies Jeff Dotson (Jr, Chanhassen, Minn) and Tim Elde (Fr, Grafton, ND) combined to record 32 saves. Dotson picked up the win.January 27, 2003STOUT'S MITCH KELLIN NAMED NCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK MENOMONIE - UW-Stout's Mitch Kellin (Jr, Cohasset, Minn) helped his team to its first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) win of the season last week and has been named the NCHA Player of the Week.
