WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (10-2, 2-1) will return from Florida this week, then get the weekend off before traveling to UW-Oshkosh, Monday, Jan. 6. The Titans (8-1, 1-1) are playing in a tournament, Jan. 3-4, in Madison, meeting North Central College, Jan. 3 and Carroll or Edgewood, Jan. 4. The Titans handed Stout their only conference loss last season, but the Blue Devils captured two games over Oshkosh, including the WIAC tournament title game where Stout won handily, 90-71. Prior to last year, Stout had not defeated Oshkosh since the 1998-99 season. The Stout/Oshkosh game is scheduled to be broadcast over WMEQ, 880-AM radio and via the internet at: www.wmeq.com Last week: The Blue Devils won two games at the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla., downing Elizabethtown College, 78-66, Dec. 29, and Hanover College, 104-77, Dec. 30.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Blue Devils (5-5, 1-2) return to the conference wars Satuday, Jan. 4 when they host preseason favorite UW-Oshkosh (9-1, 1-1) at 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Titans finished in a three-way tie for the conference title last year and are led by All-American Tim Dworak. Oshkosh captured both overtime contests last year - Stout's only two overtime games all season - winning 73-68 in Menomonie and 66-64 at Oshkosh. The last three meetings have been overtime games, with Stout winning, 73-64, during the 2000-01 season. Stout will host Northwestern College, Tuesday, Jan. 7. Stout beat Northwestern last season, 79-60. The Oshkosh game will be broadcast over WMEQ, 880-AM radio and via the internet at: www.wmeq.com Last week: The Blue Devils split two games at the DIII Hawaiian Shootout in Honolulu, Hawaii, last weekend, downing Nebraska Wesleyan, 87-81, Dec. 28, but dropping an 89-75 decision to No. 18 ranked Illinois Wesleyan, Dec. 29.

HOCKEY
The Blue Devils (4-10-0, 0-6-0 NCHA, 0-3-0 WIAC) will jump back into action Saturday, Jan. 3 when they will be at St. Olaf College (5-5-1). The Blue Devils lost, 2-1, in overtime to the Oles last year, but Stout holds a 14-8 lead in the series. Stout will host Gustavus Adolphus (3-9-0), Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Stout defeated Gustavus, 5-3, last season and hold a 4-3 lead in the series. Last week: Stout has been idle since they dropped a 7-3 decision to Augsburg College, Dec. 14.

GYMNASTICS
The Blue Devils will open their season Wednesday, Jan. 8 when they travel to Winona State.

BLUE DEVILS PUMMEL HANOVER IN FINAL FLORIDA GAME

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Lindsey Erichsen (So, Spring Valley, Minn) scored 16 points to lead UW-Stout to a 104-77 rout over Hanover College in the final day of the Land of Magic Classic, Monday, Dec. 30 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Erichsen scored 11 points in the first half as the Blue Devils (10-2) rolled to a 52-38 first half lead. Once Stout hit a double-digit lead midway through the first half, they never gave it up. Stout led by as much as 36 points with six minutes left in the game. The Blue Devils cleared the bench and 18-of-19 players scored.

Guard Erin Churchill (So, Plum City) pulled down eight rebounds to lead Stout off the glass. Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) and Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) eached tossed in 10 points.

Hanover (5-4) had three players in double digits, led by Tessa Blair's 21 points. Tessa Wynn scored 15 and Laura Little 12.

Stout is off until Monday, Jan. 6 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh to resume conference play.

AFTER SLOW START, BLUE DEVILS PUT AWAY ELIZABETHTOWN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Back-to-back jumpers by Steffanie Nemitz (Fr, Bloomington) and a field goal by Stephanie Westman (Fr, Ham Lake, Minn) pushed UW-Stout over the hump as the Blue Devils went on to a 78-66 win over Elizabethtown in the first day of the Land of Magic Classic, Sunday, Dec. 29 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Stout (9-2) shot only 32 percent in the first half, but held a slim 39-38 halftime lead before E-town (2-4) jumped out to a 44-39 lead two minutes into the second stanza. Sara Kahl (Jr, Menomonie) nailed two free throws to pull Stout to within three and Laura Verdegan (Jr, Tony) sunk a free throw to tighten the score at 44-42.

Nemitz hit a shot from the paint, then connected on a lay-up to give Stout a two point lead and Westman finished the 9-0 run with her jumper. Elizabethtown's Mary Wismer tickled the twine with a 3-pointer before Stout went on an 18-0 run and effectively put the game away over the next six minutes. E-town would get only as close as eight points through the remainder of the game.

Stout forced 46 turnovers and collected 23 steals.

Westman and Verdegan led Stout with 13 points. Wismer led Elizabethtown with 19 points. Dana Voit added 13.

BLUE DEVILS CAN'T COME BACK FAR ENOUGH

HONOLULU, Hawaii - UW-Stout overcame a 19-point first half deficit, but couldn't get all the way back as they dropped an 89-75 decision to Illinois Wesleyan in the second game of the Division III Hawaiian Shootout, Sunday, Dec. 29 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Blue Devils (5-5) cut into Illinois Wesleyan's lead, trailing 42-35 at halftime. But the 18th ranked Titans held off Stout, shooting 58 percent for the game.

Stout was led by Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) with 20 points. Barrington Smith (Sr, Oklahoma City, Okla) added 18 points and Julian Greer (Jr, St. Paul, Minn) tossed in 14 points in his second game as a Blue Devil. Greer was not eligible first semester.

Wesleyan (7-2) was led by Chris Silagi, who came off the bench to score 24 points. John Camardella had 18, Seth Hubbard 17 and Luke Kasten 13.

Stout returns home Saturday, Jan. 4 to host conference preseason favorite UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.

BALANCED SCORING LEADS STOUT TO WIN IN HAWAIIAN OPENER

HONOLULU, Hawaii - UW-Stout had four players in double figures as the Blue Devils held on to down Nebraska Wesleyan, 87-81, in the opening game of the Division III Hawaiian Shootout, Saturday, Dec. 28 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Nate Templer (Jr, Beaver Dam) led the way for the Blue Devils (5-4) with 21 points, while Casey Chapman (Sr, Hartland) tossed in 20, Jeff Vandenberghe (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) 16 and Andy Bray (Jr, Menominee, Mich) 15.

Stout jumped out to as much as an 18 point lead in the first half by scoring 16 straight points midway through the stanza, but the Prairie Wolves (5-3) cut the lead to six, 38-32, a couple minutes before the half. Vandenberghe expanded the lead with a three-pointer and Stout led 47-35 at halftime.

The Blue Devils never trailed in the second half, but Wesleyan cut the lead to 62-60 with nine minutes remaining before Stout assumed a tenuous lead throughout.

Nebraska made the game interesting down the stretch as Stout had trouble hitting free throws and Wesleyan didn't - especially Brandon Hansen, who nailed 12 straight throws in the half to finish with a game-high 30 points.

SPIELMAN NAMED TO AP LITTLE ALL-AMERICA TEAM

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout linebacker Jamie Spielman (Sr, Menomonie) added another award to an already bulging trophy case when he was named to the first team of the Associated Press Little All-America team.

The award is Spielman's fifth All-America team he has been named to this season, garnering three first team selections, one second team and one honorable mention.

The AP Little All-America team is made up of NCAA Division II and III schools, as well as NAIA schools. The AP names a first, second and third team.

The Blue Devils, who finished the 2002 season at 7-3 overall, will hold their annual team awards banquet Feb. 2.

JOSH BUCHHOLTZ VAULTS TO STOUT'S TRACK/CROSS COUNTRY JOB

MENOMONIE -
After conducting a national search, UW-Stout needed to only look out the back door to find their next men's head track and field/cross country coach.

Josh Buchholtz, a native of Bloomer and UW-La Crosse graduate, was named to head the Blue Devil track and field and cross country programs, athletic director Steve Terry announced today.

Buchholtz has been an assistant coach at UW-La Crosse for the last four seasons, working with the pole vault, high jump and sprinters. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Buchholtz earned two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) pole vault titles (1998 indoor and outdoor), and earned All-America honors in the event.

During Buchholtz's coaching career, he has had a hand in producing eight individual All-America athletes and five WIAC individual champions.

Buchholtz also worked with the Eagles' cross country programs, including administrating the prestigious Jim Drews/Tori Neubauer Invitational.

Buchholtz earned his degree from La Crosse in physical education in 2001. In addition to his coaching duties, Buchholtz will be an instructor in the physical education department.

The Blue Devils open the 2003 track and field season, Saturday, Jan. 25 at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minn.
