Trailing 28-21, Stout drove 85 yards in 16 plays, and Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) scored from one yard out to pull Stout to within one point with 37 seconds remaining. Only moments earlier, it was announced that UW-Oshkosh had defeated UW-Whitewater, 21-20, giving Stout the chance to earn the automatic qualifying bid. Following a timeout, Blue Devil coach Ed Meierkort sent the regular unit back in because holder Eric Moe (Sr, Hixton) had been knocked out of the game earlier and could not return. Quarterback Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City) rolled to his left, had blockers in front of him, as well as Eagle defenders, dived to the end zone ball first, but was about a foot short. Stout tightened the score at 14-7 when Ohman capped off a 70-yard drive with 55 seconds left in the first half. The Eagles came out smoking to open the second half when Jason Kettenhofen returned the kickoff 76 yards to Stout's 12, and five plays later Matt Smith scored from the one. Momentum shifted as Stout scored twice in the third. Seth Mattison (So, Hayfield, Minn) hauled in a pass and danced his way 55 yards for the score and three minutes later Stout knotted the score at 21 on a six play, 73-yard drive, highlighted by Bundgaard's 29 yard romp to the La Crosse 11.
