November 4, 2002BLUE DEVILS CONTROL OWN DESTINY, HEAD TO WHITEWATER UW-Stout Blue Devils (7-1, 4-1) at UW-Whitewater Warhawks (4-4, 3-2)Saturday, Nov. 9, 1 p.m. Warhawk Stadium, Whitewater, Wis. ON THE LINE: Use whatever cliche you would like. UW-Stout sits in the driver's seat or UW-Stout controls their own destiny - it still means the same thing. If Stout can win their final two games, they will assure themselves of at least a tie for the WIAC title and will get the automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs because they have beaten all of the other contenders. But UW-Whitewater stands in the way, and the Warhawks were right in the title race last week when they lost to UW-Eau Claire. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: Nick Ohman headlined the Blue Devils' 37-13 romp over UW-Stevens Point, Nov. 2. Ohman ran for two TDs, passed for two more, threw a two-point PAT, rushed for 125 yards and passed for 220 yards for 345 yards of total offense. Ohman had TD runs of 2- and 48-yards, threw for TDs of 7- and 12-yards, and pitched out to Ryan Englebert for a 48-yard TD scamper. Julio Vargas and Matt Schaeuble hauled in Ohman's TD passes. Stout racked up 504 total yards of offense to the Pointers 298. Whitewater: Eau Claire jumped out to 14-0 lead, but the Warhawks came back to take a 16-14 lead on a Jay Lorino 7-yard TD reception and three Chad Wurth field goals. But it was the Blugolds who came back with two fourth quarter TDs to take a 30-23 win. Eau Claire piled up 490 total yards, 366 in the air, while the Warhawks had 438 yards in the track meet, highlighted by quarterback's Randy Borgardt's career-high 313 passing yards. Jim Leszcynski had seven receptions for 108 yards, while Eric Stauss hauled in eight passes for 74 yards. Wurth rushed for 74 yards to move to fifth on the Whitewater all-time rushing list. LAST SEASON: Stout and Whitewater are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 6-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third with River Falls) in the WIAC. The Blue Devils were WIAC champions in 2000. Whitewater was 5-5 overall, 2-5 in the WIAC (tied for seventh). THE SERIES: Whitewater leads the series, 32-10-2, but Stout has controlled the last two seasons, taking a 28-25 win last year and clinched the WIAC title in 2000 with a 14-13 win at Whitewater. Before 2000, the last time Stout defeated Whitewater was 1985. Last year, holder Eric Moe scored from field goal formation to push Stout ahead, 21-14 midway through the third period, and Luke Bundgaard rumbled 52 yards late in the fourth quarter to clinch the win. Bundgaard finished with 134 yards rushing and the Warhawks' Chad Wurth had 110 yards on the ground. WINNING WAYS: With the exception of the 2000 championship season (10-1), the last time Stout had seven or more wins in a season was 1982 when the Blue Devils finished at 8-3. Stout was 7-4 in 1981. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "Our offense reached the level prior to where they were before (QB) Nick (Ohman) got hurt. We had the big plays that just magnify what our defense accomplishes. Our receivers made big plays, our offensive line played well. Our defensive pressure can just overwhelm a quarterback. Everyone stepped up. "We are in another must win game. This is what we have worked for all year, to come to the second to last game with only one loss and give the kids a chance to compete for another title. Our guys do understand how special this time of year is. The key to this game will be to keep the ball away from their offense. To keep the time-of-possession mode like it is now. (Running back Chad) Wurth is the best running back in the WIAC with his ability to create plays." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; the game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com November 2, 2002OHMAN-LED OFFENSE ROLLS OVER POINTERS MENOMONIE - Welcome to the Nick Ohman show. The UW-Stout sophomore quarterback led the 10th ranked Blue Devils to a 37-13 win over UW-Stevens Point, one of four teams that was sharing first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with Stout going into today's game. Ohman, from Glenwood City, threw for two touchdowns, threw one two-point conversion, ran for two more, rushed for a game high 125 yards and completed 21-of-31 passes for 220 yards. All told, Ohman, who went down a month ago to a knee injury, accounted for 345 yards and 26 points. But it would be the Pointers who drew first blood in this contest, marching 79 yards in 10 plays after a failed Blue Devil field goal early in the first quarter. LaRon Ragsdale hauled in a 22-yard pass in the back of the end zone from quarterback Scott Krause to give the Pointers a 7-0 lead at 6:55 in the first. Krause was no slouch himself, tallying 234 passing yards, completing 8-of-27 passes. Krause was the Pointers' leading rusher, but was limited to 41 yards. Stout (7-1, 4-1) got on the board just as the period ended. With a drive that began when Jordan Sinz (So, Edgar) returned a punt 25 yards to the Stout 43, Ohman capped off the 57-yard drive with a 2-yard dash to the end zone with no time left on the first quarter clock. The kick failed, and the Pointers led, 7-6. No problem, as Ohman led Stout on a four play, 78-yard drive on their next series, and carried in from 40 yards out, to give Stout a 12-6 lead with 10:52 left in the second quarter. Five minutes later, Stout got on the board again after Jake Rider (Jr, Shiocton) recovered a muffed punt on the Pointer 16 and Ohman hooked up with Julio Vargas (So, Sturgeon Bay) two plays later on a 12-yard play. An Ohman to Dan Austin (So, Clintonville) two-point conversion pushed Stout to 20-7 lead. The Pointers (5-3, 3-2) rumbled back, needing only two plays, a Krause to Kurt Keilback 58 yard pass play and a 10-yard TD pass to tight end Ross Adamczak to pull to within 20-13. Stout had one last chance in the half, and got a 38-yard field goal from Evan Larson (Fr, River Falls) for a 23-13 halftime lead. Stout struck again midway through the third period when Ohman pitched to tailback Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) who bulled through the Pointer defense for 48-yard TD and a 30-13 lead. Stout got their final score on an Ohman to Matt Schaeuble (So, Wrightstown) 7-yard play. Stout totaled 504 total yards, 233 through the air, 217 on the ground. The Pointers finished with 298 total yards, 234 by pass, 64 by rush. Englebert finished with 88 yards rushing on 15 carries, while Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhauser) had 50 yards on 14 carries. Adam Moiles (Jr, High Rolls, New Mexico) pulled in catches for 26 yards. Vargas had four grabs for 55 yards and Ross Jones (So, Appleton) had three for 54 yards. For Pointers, Tony Romano pulled in five passes for 42 yards. Ragsdale had four for 85 yards and Keilblock had two for 63 yards. Stout stays in first place with UW-Eau Claire, which defeated UW-Whitewater, 30-23, and UW-La Crosse, which defeated UW-River Falls, 29-16. Stout will be at Whitewater, Saturday, Nov. 9.November 2, 2002MARK RALPH RECEIVES ACADEMIC/ATHLETIC AWARD MENOMONIE UW-Stout senior linebacker Mark Ralph (Sr, Colfax) was awarded the Burger King/Warren Bowlus Academic Achievement Award during halftime of the Stout-Stevens Point football game Saturday, Nov. 2.
