BLUE DEVILS HOST STEVENS POINT AS CONFERENCE RACE HEATS UP

UW-Stevens Point Pointers (5-2, 3-1) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (6-1, 3-1)
Saturday, Nov. 2, 1 p.m.
Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Menomonie, Wis.
ON THE LINE: It really doesn't get any better than this. UW-Stout controls it's own destiny for the remainder of the season. Stout is setting in a five-way tie for first place in the WIAC and play three of the other four teams that are tied with them and have already defeated UW-Eau Claire, the fourth team. UW-Stevens Point provides this week's challenge, and this game was pointed out at the beginning of the season by several periodicals as a game to watch. Stout will play UW-Whitewater next week, and will close by hosting UW-La Crosse the final game of the regular season.

LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils held the wishbone offense of UW-River Falls in check for much of the game, allowing 133 yards rushing and 42 yards passing, on their way to a 21-7 win, Oct. 26, at River Falls. While tailback Luke Bundgaard did not have a big game rushing (34 yds), he did score the last two TDs, and fellow tailback Ryan Englebert scored the first. Fullback Matt Schaeuble rushed for a career-best 60 yards to leads Stout's running game, and quarterback Nick Ohman returned after missing two games to injury. Ohman completed eight passes for 157 yards, 71 yards going to Matt Sprester on three grabs. The Falcons got their only TD on a 15-yard drive after a fumble return. Stout tallied 335 total yards, 178 on the ground.

Stevens Point: All the scoring was in the third quarter and the Pointers made the most of it, outscoring UW-Oshkosh, 12-10. Tony Romano took a 67-yard pass from Scott Krause to paydirt to open the third. Oshkosh came back with a field goal and a TD. The Pointers got the eventual game winner on a one play drive to close the third, a 65-yard pass play from Krause to Kurt Kielblock. Oshkosh three times got into the Pointers' territory in the fourth quarter, but the Titans came up empty. The Titans outgained the Pointers, 343-301. Krause completed 11 passes for 179 yards.

LAST SEASON: Stout and Stevens Point are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, Stout was 6-3 overall, 4-3 (tied for third with River Falls) in the WIAC. The Blue Devils were WIAC champions in 2000. Kicker Kevin McCulley (1997-2000) has 163 points and Scott Frederickson (1986-89) is the all-time leading scorer with 178 points.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(QB) Nick (Ohman) led us on three nice, long, time consuming drives, and that's what you have to do against wishbone teams. I always felt like we were in control. Our defense did a nice job. River Falls made a couple of plays on us, but our offense came right back and scored. Matt Schaeuble was a big part of the running game. Ryan Englebert did a nice job running and as a lead blocker and Luke Bundgaard, there was no stopping him in the red zone.

"To be playing in November in a game that means something, that's what college football is all about. Stevens Point is the strongest team will have played this year. They have the best quarterback (Scott Krause) in the league and I expect them to throw the ball. I expect Krause to go to work where teams have been able to exploit us."

RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz; the game will also be broadcast live over the Internet at www.wmeq.com

STOUT GRINDS OUT 21-7 WIN OVER RIVER FALLS

RIVER FALLS
- UW-Stout held UW-River Falls' wishbone rushing game to 133 yards and went on to a 21-7 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win at Ramer Field, Saturday, Oct. 26. The Blue Devils' Luke Bundgaard (Jr, Weyerhaeuser) scored two second half touchdowns.

Fellow tailback Ryan Englebert (Fr, Sturgeon Bay) scored the first TD of the game, a one-yard plunge in the first quarter that was set up by a 30-yard pass play from Nick Ohman (So, Glenwood City), playing in his first game since injurying his knee three weeks ago, to Adam Moiles (Jr, High Rolls, New Mexico), who started at quarterback last week in place of Ohman.

Bundgaard got his first score in the third quarter, capping off a 72-yard drive with a three-yard run.

The Falcons (1-6, 0-4) scored on a five-play, 15-yard drive in the fourth quarter after stripping a Stout receiver of the ball. Stout (6-1, 3-1) answered back on the next drive, putting together a 64-yard scoring drive, punctuated by Bundgaard's second TD, which pushed his career scoring totals to 162 points, tying him for third on the Stout all-time scoring list. Englebert added the two point conversion for the final score.

While Bundgaard and Englebert found hard running up the middle all day, recording 34 and 53 yards, respectively, the Blue Devils went to fullback Matt Schaeuble (So, Wrightstown), who picked up an additional 60 yards, a career best.

Stout stopped a River Falls last gasp when Eric Moe (Sr, Hixton) snagged his fourth interception of the year.

Stout tallied 335 total yards, 178 on the ground. Ohman completed 80-of-20 passes for 157 yards. Matt Sprester (Jr, Clear Lake) pulled in three passes for 71 yards.

River Falls got 50 yards from John Peterlik, and 43 yards from Dan Booth as they tallied 175 total yards.

The Stout win, combined with a UW-Whitewater overtime win over UW-La Crosse, moves Stout into a five-way tie for first place in the WIAC.

Stout returns home next weekend when they host UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.

BLUE DEVIL SOCCER RECORDS WIN IN FINAL MINUTES

MADISON -
UW-Stout waited until very late in the game to get all of the goals they would need to down Edgewood College, Saturday, Oct. 26 in Madison.

The Blue Devils (6-4-5) got all of their scoring in the final eight minutes of the game as they took a 2-0 non-conference win over the Eagles (6-11-2).

Nellie Sivertsen (Sr, River Falls) scored the game winner in the 82nd minute, getting an assist by Kristi Symons (Fr, Reedsburg) and Carrie Schrank (So, Reedsburg). Schrank put the game away with 30 seconds left with an unassisted goal.

With Stout defense holding the line, Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac) needed only one save as she got her fifth complete shutout of the season. The Eagles' Katie Livick had 11 saves. Stout outshot the Eagles, 21-7.

Stout will close out the regular and conference season when they travel to UW-Superior, Thursday, Oct. 31.

LA CROSSE SCORES IN FINAL SECONDS TO TRIP BLUE DEVILS

MENOMONIE -
It looked like UW-Stout was heading towards another overtime game until UW-La Crosse deflated that opportunity late in the game, Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Nelson Field as the Eagles took a 2-1 conference win.

The Blue Devils (5-4-5, 1-2-4) fell behind early when the Eagles' Sarah Carlson scored 12 minutes into the game. The Eagles (5-9-0, 2-5-0) went on to outshoot Stout, 12-6, in the first half.

The cold snap of halftime must have awaken Stout, because the Blue Devils went on a tear, controlling the ball much of the second half and holding a 16-5 shots advantage.

Stout finally got onto the scoreboard in the 78th minute when Kelly Stolarczyk (Fr, Elk River, Minn) headed a pass from Krista Hight (So, Brookfield) in a crowd into the goal to knot the score.

The Blue Devils pressed again for the final 12 minutes, and had a good shot to take the lead, but Nellie Sivertsen's (Sr, River Falls) shot went over the goal.

The Eagles' Cynthia Fudzinski got the game winner with 23 seconds left in the contest when she found Stout keeper Melissa Ballweg (So, Merrimac) on the ground scrambling for the ball and put the ball over her.

Ballweg finished with eight saves, while Jessica Gammey had nine saves for La Crosse.

BLUE DEVILS DOWN FIFTH RANKED FALCONS, 3-1

MENOMONIE -
The same day UW-Stout slipped one spot in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III poll, the Blue Devils took on the fifth ranked team, UW-River Falls, and sent the Falcons home with their first loss since Sept. 14.

The Blue Devils, who ranked 20th in the poll released today, took a thrilling four game match, 30-27, 30-26, 26-30, 30-27, Wednesday, Oct. 23 at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Stout (23-5, 6-2) fell behind by five points early in the fourth game, but pulled ahead to stay at 15-14, but not without a fight from the Falcons (24-4, 7-1). River Falls tied the match at 19, but could never get closer than one point the rest of the way.

Tanille Zenner (Fr, Athens) smacked down two kills to put Stout ahead, 23-21, then Lindsay Mensink (So, Ostrander, Minn) gave Stout a 24-22 lead. The Falcons' Karen ZumMallen pulled River Falls to 24-23. Kills by Stout's Brooke Viegut (Jr, Abbotsford) and Gretchen Schroer (Jr, Eau Claire) stretched Stout's lead to 26-23.

The Falcons' Stacy Hinz, who had entered the match for the first time all evening minutes earlier, pulled the visitors to within 26-25 on consecutive kills, before Stout pulled away.

All four games had their moments, and very rarely did the score differential balloon to more than four points for either team.

Viegut and River Falls' Krystle Brune led all scorers with 18-kill evenings. Mensink added 17 for Stout, and Zenner had 15. ZumMallen pitched in 16 kills for the Falcons.

Play at the net was outstanding, with River Falls recording one solo block and 16 assisted blocks, while Stout had four solo blocks and 18 assisted blocks. Gina Anderson and Melissa Tvrdik each had four assisted blocks for River Falls and ZumMellen finished with a solo and three assisted blocks.

Mensink led the way at the net for Stout with a solo block and five assisted blocks. Zenner and Tami Martinek (Sr, Eau Claire) each had four assisted blocks.

The win gives Stout the No. 3 seed in the WIAC tournament, and the Blue Devils will open the tournament at home Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. River Falls had clinched the No. 1 seed earlier, but now will share the conference regular season crown with UW-Whitewater.
