FALCONS BRING WISHBONE OFFENSE TO WILLIAMS CARPET FOR FIRST TIME

UW-River Falls (2-3, 2-1) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (3-2, 1-2)
Saturday, Oct. 20, 1 p.m. - UW-Stout Homecoming
Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Menomonie, Wis.

ON THE LINE: They are all tough for UW-Stout, and if the Blue Devils want to stay in contention for the conference title, they need to defeat UW-River Falls. But the conference title is still wide open. With River Falls' loss to UW-Stevens Point last week, there are no undefeated teams remaining, with UW-Eau Claire, Stevens Point, UW-Platteville and River Falls all setting on top with a 2-1 WIAC record. Everyone else is 1-2.

LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils lost the ball five times and four of those turnovers were turned into points by UW-Eau Claire as the Blugolds dumped Stout in the muddy Carson Park field, 33-0, the first time Stout has been blanked since 1999 when River Falls did the honors, 47-0, at River Falls. Eau Claire out-yarded Stout, 202-185, in total yards.

River Falls: The River Falls wishbone attack was held to 61 second half yards and Stevens Point scored 12 unanswered points to beat the Falcons, 12-7, Oct. 13 in Stevens Point. On the day, River Falls was held to 275 total yards, 143 on the ground. The Falcons only score came in the first half when quarterback Dustin Vogelgesang connected with John Peterlik for a 61-yard touchdown strike. River Falls gave up only 280 total yards and forced four Pointer interceptions.

LAST YEAR: Stout and River Falls are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are both affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 10-1 overall, 7-0 (first) in the WIAC, and completed an NCAA Division III record turnaround finish. The season ended with a 26-19 first round NCAA Division III playoff loss to eventual Division III runner-up St. John's. The Falcons finished the season at 6-4 overall, 5-2 (third) in the WIAC.

THE SERIES: This is the 87th meeting (River Falls leads, 64-33) in a series that began in 1912 with 13-11 River Falls win. Last season, River Falls opened with a 10-0 first quarter lead, but Stout scored 20 points before River Falls scored with a field goal in the third quarter. Eric Lund gave Stout a 27-13 lead in the fourth quarter with his second fumble recovery for a TD in the game. Luke Bundgaard picked up a late score for the 34-13 final. The Falcons outgained Stout, 295-203.

COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (39-47 career) is in his ninth year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. Falcons coach John O'Grady (72-39-3) is in his 12th year with the Falcons.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "(Against UW-Eau Claire) we didn't make any adjustments to the field conditions and they did. At times we looked good offensively, then we turned it over. How do you do this? At halftime, we have 41 plays to their 23 and we lead in time of possession, but are behind, 27-0. After three years of ruling the roost against Eau Claire, we found out what it was like eating crow.

"Now, we are just trying to figure out how to score points. We have scored only seven points in the last two games, and River Falls may be the best defensive team we will face. We have been working hard to be this bad offensively. When we have back-to-back offensive performances like we had, we have got to get things turned around. It will be a monumental task to come back after a whipping by our rival to face another rival on our homecoming. We will have a better product."

BLUGOLDS BURY BLUE DEVILS IN THE MUD, 33-0

EAU CLAIRE - When it rains, it pours, and Mother Nature and UW-Eau Claire poured on UW-Stout as the Blugolds blanked the Blue Devils, 33-0, at a muddy Carson Park, Saturday, Oct. 13.

For the second week in a row, turnovers bit the Blue Devils (3-2, 1-2) as Stout was intercepted three times and lost two of four fumbles. The Blugolds also had trouble hanging onto the ball in the poor field conditions, putting five balls on the ground, but regained all five.

Even when Stout could get a break, like an Eric Moe (Jr, Northfield) interception, the Blue Devils turned the ball back over to Eau Claire (5-1, 2-1).

The Blugolds scored the first time they had the football when Brian Rassmussen hooked up with Jeremy Bergeron for a 47 yard pass play with only 26 seconds off the clock.

Darrell Souhrada scored three touchdowns for the Blugolds, scoring once in the first quarter (7:25 remaining), once in the second quarter (7:30) and once in the third quarter (00:41). The Blugolds got their other score midway through the second quarter when Jay Hoyord scooped up a called Stout fumble and scored from 78 yards out. Eau Claire's final four scores came on drives after Stout turnovers.

Eau Claire held a slight edge in total yards, tallying 202 yards to Stout's 185. Eau Claire rushed for 103 yards and passed for 99 yards. Stout ran for 102 yards and passed for 83 yards.

Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser/Bruce) led Stout on the ground with 70 yards in 19 carries. Souhrada led all rushers with 75 yards on 22 carries. Stout's Steve Anderson (So, Stanley) snagged his first collegiate interception, returning it 29 yards to the Stout 43 in the third quarter, but the Blue Devils managed three yards on the drive before punting.

Stout will need to get cleaned up and ready to host UW-River Falls, Saturday, Oct. 20 for homecoming. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

TWO SECOND HALF GOALS SPELL DOOM FOR STOUT

WINONA, Minn - In almost a repeat of their previous game, the UW-Stout soccer team allowed two goals early in the second half after a scoreless first half, this time taking a 2-0 loss at St. Mary's University, Saturday, Oct. 13.

Reminiscent of Stout's loss to UW-Eau Claire last Thursday, the Cardinals scored two minutes into the second half when Katie Lentz scored and 22 minutes later Kelly Mooney added the second goal.

From an attack point of view, the game was even with St. Mary's (3-8-2) getting off 14 shots to Stout's (10-5-1) 13. The shots on goal count was even, with both teams notching 10.

Jessie Sutherland (Sr, Duluth, Minn) worked the first half for Stout, getting two saves, and Melissa Ballweg (Fr, Merrimac) worked the second getting six saves, but also the loss. The Cardinals' Colleen O'Hearn recorded eight saves and Dianna Kyllo came on for two additional saves.

Stout will regroup and host UW-Stevens Point, Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., then wrap up the regular conference schedule by traveling to UW-Whitewater, Friday, Oct. 19 to make up a game originally scheduled for September.

EAU CLAIRE USES STRONG SECOND HALF TO DOWN BLUE DEVILS

MENOMONIE - UW-Eau Claire scored four goals in the second half to snap UW-Stout's five game winning streak and handed the Blue Devils a 4-0 loss, Thursday, Oct. 11 at Nelson Field.

The two teams played relatively even through the scoreless first half with Stout (10-4-1, 4-2-0) attacking, but unable to get off a clean shot on goal. Eau Claire got off three shots on goalkeeper Jessie Sutherland (Sr, Duluth, Minn), who stopped all three.

But Eau Claire (7-3-2, 3-2-1) pressed harder in the second stanza, attacking second half goalkeeper Melissa Ballweg (Fr, Merrimac) with 18 shots, 15 on goal, and two goals within the first seven minutes of the half.

The Blugolds' Erika Thompson and Kelly Kavanaugh scored early in the half, and Kris Unterweger, the sister of former Blue Devil standout Jessica Unterweger, and Jullia Powell scored in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Ballweg did record 10 saves in the second half, but was saddled with the loss.

BLUE DEVIL SOCCER WINS ANOTHER TIGHT ONE

MENOMONIE - For the third consecutive game, the UW-Stout soccer team came out with a 2-1 win, this time beating Viterbo University in one overtime, Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Nelson Field.

With the score tied at 1-1 and time running down on the overtime clock, Carrie Schrank (Fr, Reedsburg) took a throw-in from Sarah Geiger (So, West Bend) just outside the corner of the box and lofted a soft kick over the head of Viterbo goalkeeper Amy Hawkinson to the far post with two-minutes, 30-seconds remaining in the first overtime.

The game started in a steady rain, and the Blue Devils (10-3-1) were not all wet as Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls) scored only seven minutes into the game, getting an assist from Laura Beck (Jr, Centerville, Minn).

While Viterbo (2-8-1) got only three shots off all game, one of those found the mark 17 minutes into the second half off the foot of Katy Werner. Most of the game was played in the Viterbo zone, with Stout holding a 12-3 advantage in shots.

Melissa Ballweg (Fr, Merrimac) worked the second half and overtime and picked up the win.

The win gives Stout it's fifth straight victory - the first time in Stout history - and the 10 wins on the season is the most by a Stout team in a season.
