October 8, 2001UW-Stout Blue Devils (3-1, 1-1) at UW-Eau Claire Blugolds (4-1, 1-1)Saturday, Oct. 13, 1 p.m. Carson Park, Eau Claire, Wis. ON THE LINE: The winner of this one stays in contention for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) crown and the loser, well, they will have a long hill to climb and will need some help to get there. UW-River Falls is alone on top of the WIAC with a 2-0 league mark, while six teams - including Stout and Eau Claire - are tied for second with a 1-1 mark. UW-LaCrosse is sitting at the bottom with an 0-2 mark. Stout has beaten Eau Claire the last three years. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils lost the ball six times - three times within the red zone. It looked like Stout would dominate after forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff and scoring three plays later when Matt Lonergan hooked up with Julio Vargas. The Titans' Shannon King knotted the score with a 43-yard TD reception and Oshkosh took the lead when a snap for a punt went out of the end zone for a safety. Oshkosh added a TD and a field goal in the third quarter and made that stand up. Stout outgained the Titans, 275 total yards to 188, and had the ball seven more minutes. Eau Claire: The Blugolds lost a heartbreaker at UW-River Falls, 24-23, in double overtime to take Eau Claire out of the unbeaten ranks. After a 14-14 regulation contest, the two teams traded field goals in the first overtime period and touchdowns in the second overtime period, but the Blugolds' extra point bid was blocked. The Blugolds held the Falcons - who last year gained 733 yards against Eau Claire - to 294 total yards, all on the ground. Eau Claire totaled 345 total yards, 137 on the ground, 208 in the air. Darrell Souhrada finished with 153 rushing yards on 38 carries, while quarterback Brian Rassmussen threw for all 208 yards. Chad Crutchley pulled down six receptions for 153 yards. LAST YEAR: Stout and Eau Claire are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are both affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 10-1 overall, 7-0 (first) in the WIAC, and completed an NCAA Division III record turnaround finish. The season ended with a 26-19 first round NCAA Division III playoff loss to eventual Division III runner-up St. John's. The Blugolds finished the season at 6-4 overall, 4-3 (fourth) in the WIAC. THE SERIES: This is the 78th meeting (Eau Claire leads, 44-27-6) in a series that began in 1917 with a 49-0 Stout win. Last season, for the second straight year, kicker Kevin McCulley provided the heroics with the game winning field goal, this time with 4:47 remaining for a 17-14 win. As the score shows, the game was a fairly even contest with Stout gathering 393 total yards and Eau Claire 345. Darrell Souhrada rushed for 190 yards on 35 carries for Eau Claire, while Stout's Luke Bundgaard had 121 yards on 23 carries. OFFENSIVE LOOK: Eau Claire: Multiple; Stout: multi-pro. DEFENSIVE LOOK: Eau Claire: multiple; Stout: 3-4 COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (39-46 career) is in his ninth year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. Blugolds coach Todd Hoffner (12-13) is in his third year with the Blugolds. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "The outcome (of the Oshkosh game) wasn't unexpected when you turn the ball over six times. When you are not performing well and you turn the ball over, that is deadly. We simply had too many errors mentally, and we did that for a hungry team. I have to take my hat off to Oshkosh. "Now, we have got our rival (Eau Claire) and the winner of this game is still in the (title) hunt. I told our players that our (winning) streak would eventually stop. Now, we have got to start another streak. Eau Claire is a very talented team with a diverse offense. They have running back Darrell Souhrada and quarterback Brian Rassmussen. We have always respected Eau Claire. I have always thought the Eau Claire offensive line is one of the best and Bob Schmidt is one of the premier players. We have got to stretch the field more. If we turn the ball over six times against Eau Claire, we lose by 100." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve SchrantzOctober 6, 2001BLUE DEVILS FUMBLE AWAY GAME TO TITANS, FALL 19-7OSHKOSH - The meat grinder portion of the UW-Stout football season was supposed to start next week, not this week against the lowly regarded UW-Oshkosh Titans. The Blue Devils (3-1, 1-1) lost 5-of-6 fumbles and tossed an interception as the Titans (2-2, 1-1) took a 19-7 win at Titan Stadium, Saturday, Oct. 6 in the Oshkosh homecoming. It looked like Stout would dominate the game very early. On the opening kickoff, the Blue Devils forced the Titans' Shannon King to fumble and, only a three plays later Stout had a 7-0 lead after quarterback Matt Lonergan (Jr, Hartford) hooked up with Julio Vargas (Fr, Luxemburg) for an 11-yard scoring pass. But King would make up for the mistake, scoring on a 43-yard pass play from Alan Beversdorf to knot the game with six minutes left in the first quarter. The Titans got a safety late in the second quarter when the snap for the punt went way over the Stout punters' head and out of the end zone, allowing the Titans a 9-7 halftime lead. Oshkosh took a 16-7 lead four minutes into the third quarter when Matt Kimler rolled into the end zone from 22-yards out. The Blue Devils got in big trouble late in the third quarter when they fumbled on their own 17. Stout's defense actually pushed Oshkosh back two yards on their drive, but David Gaulke connected on a 36 yard field goal with 5:20 showing on the clock. Stout put together what may have been their most impressive drive of the season when they started at their own 16 yard line and moved down to the Oshkosh 3 in 14 plays before fumbling the ball away. Stout fumbled away another drive minutes later on first down when they took over on their own 49. Stout led most statistical categories, rolling up 275 total yards to Oshkosh's 188. The Blue Devils also led in time of possession with 33 minutes to 27 minutes. But most important to the final outcome was the fumble margin, where the Titans lost only 2-of-3 they put on the ground. Kimmler led all rushers with 98 yards on 32 carries. For Stout, Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser) had 66 yards on 19 carries and Eric Baker (Sr, Sarona) had 50 yards on nine carries. Beversdorf was 6-of-13 for 94 yards passing, while Lonergan was 6-for-12 for 102 yards and Nick Ohman (Fr, Glenwood City) was 4-for-7 for 21 yards. The loss stopped Stout's consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win streak at eight and their regular season win streak at 13. Stout now must conclude their schedule with the teams that were picked to finish on the top of the league, beginning with UW-Eau Claire next weekend. The Blugolds were ranked 12th nationally, to Stout's eighth national ranking, but Eau Claire dropped a 24-23 double overtime decision to UW-River Falls. Stout will host River Falls Oct. 20 for homecoming.
October 7, 2001BLUE DEVIL SOCCER OFF TO BEST START EVERMADISON - With a 2-1 win over Wisconsin Lutheran, Sunday, Oct. 7 at Breeze Stevens Field in Madison, the UW-Stout soccer team recorded their seventh win over the last eight games and are off to the best start in Stout women's soccer history. Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls) opened the scoring in the first half on assists by Stacy Normington (Jr, Delavan) and Desiree Nardini (So, White Bear Lake, Minn). Normington added a goal later in the stanza, getting assists from Kristi Field (So, Bloomington, Minn) and Sarah Gieger (So, West Bend). Wisconsin Lutheran averted a shutout in the second half when they scored on a penalty kick, the second straight game where Stout (9-3-1) was denied a shutout because of a penalty kick. Jessie Sutherland (Sr, Duluth, Minn) picked up the win in the goal, getting one save. Melissa Ballweg (Fr, Merrimac) had two saves while working the second half. Stout rarely allowed Wisconsin Lutheran (9-4) into their defensive zone, and outshot Lutheran, 19-6. Stout had a corner kick advantage of 16-1. The Wisconsin Lutheran goalkeeper stopped 13 Stout shots on goal. Stout will host Viterbo University Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. and UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, Oct 11 at 7 p.m. October 5, 2001GOAL IN FINAL MINUTES LIFT BLUE DEVILS OVER PLATTEVILLEMENOMONIE - Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls) scored with less than three minutes left to lift UW-Stout to a 2-1 conference win over UW-Platteville, Friday, Oct. 5 at Nelson Field. With the score knotted at one goal apiece, Carrie Schrank (Fr, Reedsburg) took a ball to the corner, fired a pass to Kristi Field (So, Bloomington, Minn) who found Sivertsen and Sivertsen scored her 10th goal of the season. After a scoreless first half, Stout (8-3-1, 4-1) scored only five minutes into the second stanza when Field and Sivertsen combined to feed Stacy Normington (Jr, Delavan), who put the ball into the net. Stout goalkeeper Melissa Ballweg (Fr, Merrimac) kept the Pioneers silent, but she got plenty of help from her defense that allowed only one shot on goal during play in the second half. The Pioneers (1-8-1, 0-4) got their only goal when Jessi Jones was awarded a penalty kick in the 82nd minute. Stout allowed only three shots on goal all evening, while the Blue Devils put 19 shots on goal. October 2, 2001SIVERTSEN SCORES TWICE IN HER HOMETOWNRIVER FALLS - Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls) wasted little time putting the ball in the net as she led UW-Stout to a 4-1 win over UW-River Falls in her hometown of River Falls, Tuesday, Oct. 2. Sivertsen scored only 29 seconds into the contest. She added another goal late in the contest and also got an assist. The Blue Devils (7-3-1, 3-1) also got goals from Ramona Vann (Fr, Grand Rapids, Minn) and Kristi Field (So, Bloomington, Minn). Stout outshot the Falcons, 35-11, and put 25 shots on goal. The Falcons (5-4-0, 2-2-0) got their only goal in the 18th minute when Amy Gilfillan tied the score. Vann's goal, with Sivertsen's assist just before halftime, would prove to be enough for the Blue Devils. Sarah Geiger (So, West Bend) notched two assists and Amy Boyle (So, Racine) and Jessie Sutherland (Sr, Duluth, Minn) each chalked up another. Sutherland recorded six saves in the first half before moving to the midfield for the second half and earned the win. Melissa Ballweg (Fr, Merrimac) only faced one shot on goal in the second half.
October 6, 2001VOLLEYBALL TEAM EXTENDS WINNING STREAK TO TENPLATTEVILLE - UW-Stout ran their winning streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 conference win over UW-Platteville, Saturday, Oct. 6 at Platteville. Even though the Blue Devils took all three games, Blue Devil head coach Jill Jolliff said "We never had a commanding lead," and Jolliff said it even felt like Stout (17-3, 5-0) was behind most of the time. The Devils won 30-28, 30-22, 30-27. Rachel Eidet (Sr, North Mankato, Minn) put together a strong first game, picking up seven of her team-high 17 kills for the match. Eidet finished with 14 digs. Kim Roshell (Sr, Cornell) had 15 kills and Laura Bogenschutz (So, Baxter, Minn) had 44 assists, but seven Blue Devils finished up with at least one assist. Eidet, Brooke Palmer (Sr, Mantorville, Minn), Aira Ryan (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) and Lindsay Mensink (Fr, Ostrander, Minn) each collected four block assists. Platteville, which had been receiving national votes, fell to 15-7 overall, but 0-4 in the WIAC. Stout will be at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Oct. 10 and will host Gustavus Adolphus, Saturday, Oct. 13. October 5, 2001VOLLEYBALL TEAM GETS PAST LACROSSE FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1994LA CROSSE - UW-La Crosse has had the UW-Stout volleyball team's number since 1994, but not anymore as the Blue Devils downed the Eagles, 30-25, 30-22, 30-22, Friday, Oct. 5 at La Crosse as Stout stayed unbeaten in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. The Blue Devils (16-3, 4-0) have not beaten the Eagles since Oct. 22, 1994, but Stout reversed that by never seriously falling behind at any point in the contest. "We had an outstanding night defensively," said Blue Devil coach Jill Jolliff. Rachel Eidet (Sr, North Mankato, Minn) and Kim Roshell (Sr, Cornell) each finished the night with 18 digs. Eidet added 12 kills on the night and had two solo blocks. Brooke Palmer (Sr, Mantorville, Minn) led the Blue Devils with 17 kills. Aira Ryan (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) had four block assists.Laura Bogenschutz (So, Baxter, Minn) notched 44 assists, but her only solo block of the night led to match point. October 3, 2001SENIOR HITTERS LEAD STOUT TO WIN OVER EAU CLAIREMENOMONIE - UW-Stout's four senior hitters provided a balanced hitting attack as the Blue Devils upended UW-Eau Claire, 30-26, 25-30, 30-28, 30-24, Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The quartet of Brooke Palmer (Sr, Mantorville, Minn), Kim Roshell (Sr, Cornell), Rachel Eidet (Sr, North Mankato, Minn) and Aira Ryan (Sr, Zumbrota, Minn) combined for 56 of Stout's 68 total kills. Roshell led the way with 16 kills, while Palmer finished with 14 and Eidet and Ryan each racked up 13. Eidet led all players with 28 digs, while Roshell finished with 17 digs. Defensive specialist Sara Weflen (Sr, Jackson, Minn) came on to nail down five service aces. Laura Bogenschutz (So, Baxter, Minn) had 50 assists and eight kills. Eau Claire's Rachel Gullerud led all players with 22 kills. Brooke Wozniak had 11 kills for the visitors. The teams played typical nail biters throughout the entire match. After Stout won the first match, the Blugolds (17-4, 1-2) came back for the second win and looked like they would crush Stout (15-3, 3-0) in the third game. The Blue Devils came back from 10-1 and 17-7 deficits to pull to tie the score at 24. Eau Claire took a 28-27 lead, but Palmer came on to serve the final three points to lift Stout. The pattern repeated itself in the fourth game with Eau Claire jumping out to a 6-1 lead, before Stout came back and took control late.
