May 7, 2002FRESHMAN KAELA WOLD NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCEMENOMONIE - Freshman outfielder Kaela Wold (Altoona) was the lone UW-Stout player named to the 2002 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) softball first team. Senior second baseman Sarah Kokke (Galesville) and sophomore shortstop Kim Caswell (Stanley) were named to the honorable mention team. Wold, who started 19 of the Blue Devils' 24 games, led Stout in batting average (.409, 27 hits in 66 at-bats), runs batted in (14), home runs (4), slugging percentage (.712, 47 total bases) and matched Caswell for doubles (8). Wold finished with 13 runs scored and had a fielding percentage of .909. Conference play did not deter the young Wold. Rather, she increased her percentages in conference games only, hitting at a .464 clip (13-of-28) with 11 RBI. She also smacked three home runs and three doubles in conference play. Kokke was the Blue Devils' team captain and was also a clutch hitter this season, hitting .322 (19-of-59) with two doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI. She also stole three bases. Caswell hit .297 (22-of-74), but in particular liked conference pitching, averaging .382 (13-of-34) in league play. Overall, she had eight doubles, one home run and 12 RBI. She was second on the team in stolen bases with eight. Stout finished the season at 9-16 overall, 3-9 in WIAC play and tied for fifth in the WIAC tournament.
May 13, 2002LUER, VERDEGAN, WERNER HEADLINE 2002 TEAM AWARDSMENOMONIE - Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) and Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) was named as co-most valuable field performers while Kate Werner (Fr, Elk Mound) was named as the most valuable track performer, UW-Stout women's track & field coach Joe Harlan announced at the team's annual awards banquet, Sunday, May 12. Both Luer and Verdegan have rewritten their portion of the Blue Devils' record books and both have earned All-America status this year by placing third at the 2002 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. The two scored 12 points at the meet, placing Stout 11th, the highest ever finish for a Blue Devil women's team at the national meet. Both have qualified to the outdoor championships later this month. Luer has advanced in both the shot put and the discus, while Verdegan has secured a spot in the triple jump and is provisionally qualified in the long jump. Luer won the outdoor conference discus title, while Verdegan won the outdoor triple jump crown. Luer set the school record this year in the indoor shot put (46-8), the outdoor shot put (46-10) and the discus (175-1), while Verdegan set the school mark for the indoor triple jump (38-3.50) and tied the school record for the outdoor long jump (18-4.50). Verdegan set the outdoor triple jump mark last season. Werner was having an outstanding indoor season as a sprinter until an injury put her out for the second half of the season and part of the outdoor season. Werner came back in mid-April to run individual and relay races for the Blue Devils. Marci Schachtner (Fr, Deer Park) was named the team's most improved performer. Schachtner started the outdoor season off with a hammer throw of 80-feet. Her next time out, she tossed the appliance 131-7 and went on to set the school record with a toss of 153-3. Her lone throw in the indoor 20-lb weight throw (36-11.75) was the best toss for a Blue Devils this season. Distance runner Amy Arndt (Sr, Lakefield, Minn) was named the most inspirational. Arndt, along with Heidi Bedsted (Jr, Plainview, Minn), was honored as a 2002 team captain. Bedsted, Amy Biegel (Jr, Eau Claire) and Verdegan were named 2003 team captains.

May 11, 2002WET WEATHER DOES NOT HAMPER LUER OR SCHACHTNERMINNEAPOLIS - UW-Stout's Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) has never let a little damp weather crimp her style. Rather, she has excelled in it, but never as much as Saturday, May 11 when Luer completely destroyed her discus record on her way to a first place finish at the University of Minnesota Qualifier. Coming into the event with the top distance in NCAA Division III in the discus, Luer may have the put the event out of reach by tossing the plate 175-feet, 1-inch, in a constant drizzle, 16 feet over her previous best of 159-1. Her toss is an automatic distance in Division III and would be a provisional distance in Division I. Not to be outdone, Marci Schachtner (Fr, Deer Park) snapped the school record in the hammer throw as she placed fifth behind four Division I competitors, tossing the ball on a wire in a provisional qualifying mark of 153-3, erasing Jen Turner's 1999 mark of 147-4. Luer has qualified to the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, May 23-25 at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., in both the discus and the shot put. Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) captured two first place finishes at the meet, jumping 17-9.50 in the long jump and 37-1 in the triple jump. Both are short of her season-bests.

Schachtner's previous best was 132-3, set last week at the conference meet. Her cousin, Ann Schachtner (Fr, Somerset), placed second in the shot put with a throw of 40-0.75, her third best throw of the season. Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) was trying to improve her distance in the long jump and placed third (17-7.50) and fourth in the 400-hurdles (1:05.72). Tracy Oostdyk (So, Spooner) was ninth in the 3000-steeplechase (11:58.92, an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time) and Amy Arndt (Sr, Lakefield, Minn) was 13th (12:42.38).
