BLUE DEVILS COMEBACK TO EARN SPLIT WITH LACROSSE IN FINALE

MENOMONIE - While it wasn't enough to earn UW-Stout a trip to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament, the Blue Devils did get some consolation with a comeback, 8-7, win over UW-La Crosse in the second game of a doubleheader, Sunday, May 5 in Menomonie.

After getting blown out, 10-2, in the first game, it looked like the Blue Devils (18-20, 12-15) would cruise in the second game, building an early 5-1 lead. The Eagles (22-16, 18-10) came back with two runs in the third and two in the fourth to forge a 5-5 tie. Vinnie Rottino's RBI double down the left field line gave La Crosse, who will advance to the WIAC tournament, a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning.

Brad Barneson (Sr, Strum) knotted the game up with a one-out solo home run to left field. Jon Kroening (So, Ladysmith) walked, then looked like a sure out when Nick Kalina's (Sr, Potosi) bunt was turned Kroening's way, but the Blue Devils got new life with an error, sending Kroening to third.

Matt Hoeft (Jr, Elk Mound) hit a whistling single down the left field line, driving in Kroening and Kalina for an 8-6 lead.

Stout would need both runs. With one out, the Eagles pounded out three straight singles to load the bases on Stout pitcher Rob Govek (Sr, Wausau). Dan Mielke's fielder's choice scored one run to pull La Crosse to within one. Vinnie Rottino shot a rocket to deep left field, sending Hoeft to the warning track where he snagged the bomb, giving Stout the win.

Barneson went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Hoeft was 2-for-5 with four RBI. The Eagles pounded out 17 hits to Stout's nine, but also stranded 14 runners.

Stout, UW-Oshkosh and UW-River Falls all had the track on the final playoff spot. Oshkosh split with UW-Platteville and UW-River Falls was taken out of the equation when they lost to UW-Superior. Stout and Oshkosh remained tied, but the Titans own the tiebreaker of defeating more teams that finished above them in the standings.

In the first game, La Crosse scored one run in the first and added two more in the second before Stout got a run in the fourth. Stout added a run in the sixth, but La Crosse racked up four runs in the bottom half of the stanza, then added two more in the seventh and one in the ninth.

La Crosse out-hit Stout, 15-10, in the contest and La Crosse's Rottino when 4-for-5 with five RBI. Kalina was 3-for-4 for the Blue Devils, who used 10 pitchers.

BLUE DEVILS SPLIT WITH LA CROSSE TO STAY IN CONFERENCE HUNT

MENOMONIE - In a sense, UW-Stout's Adam Acker (Jr, Minnetonka, Minn) got a chance to live out a ball players dream - hitting the game-ending home run in the bottom of the last inning.

It wasn't quite that sweet for Acker and the Blue Devils, but Acker's first collegiate home run put a merciful end to the game in the seventh inning where Stout came out on top of UW-La Crosse, 18-6. The Eagles won the opener, 7-4, Saturday, May 4 at Nelson Field.

The win keeps Stout (17-19, 11-14) in the hunt for the fourth conference tournament playoff spot, with the Blue Devils tied with traditional favorite UW-Oshkosh.

Acker's home run came seconds after the umpires had called the game in favor of the 10-run rule, a rule used by the NCAA. The WIAC uses the 12-run rule to end the game. With Stout up, 16-6, Acker close the book.

The game featured seven home runs, three by La Crosse, four by Stout as the Eagles (21-15, 17-9) answered Stout's runs most of the way.

As a team, Stout punched out 20 hits in the contest to go with their 14 hits in the opening game. In addition to Acker, Stout got round-trippers from Matt Hoeft (Jr, Elk Mound), Brad Barneson (Sr, Strum) and Rob Govek (Sr, Wausau).

Acker went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Justin Biever (Jr, South Milwaukee) and Hoeft were 3-for-5 with Hoeft driving in four runs. Govek had three hits and Barneson, JW Dachel (Sr, Bloomer) and Brock Meyer (Jr, Lyle, Minn) had two hits apiece.

Stout scored four runs in the second to give Justin Kuehn (Fr, Augusta) his first collegiate win, two runs in the third, one in the fourth, five int he fifth and six in the seventh.

Stout smacked the ball around in the opener, but had a hard time driving in the runs, stranding 13, including leaving the bases loaded in the ninth.

La Crosse scored two in the first, one in the second, two in the third and two in the fifth.

Nick Kalina (Sr, Potosi) was 3-for-5 to lead Stout.

BLUE DEVILS USE NINE DIFFERENT PITCHERS IN SWEEP OF SUPERIOR

SUPERIOR - In a rather unusual use of pitchers, UW-Stout utilized nine different pitchers - one per inning - and went on to sweep UW-Superior, 7-6, 3-0, Wednesday, May 1 at Superior.

Coach Craig Walter used the same pitching lineup throughout the two games, starting off with Brian Bee (Sr, Bloomer), follwed by Jason Kuehn (Fr, Augusta), Jon Severson (Fr, Hayfield, Minn), Nick Jones (So, La Crosse), Ryan Wolf (Sr, Adrian, Minn), Adam Rothenbuhler (Sr, Trego), Matt Lunde (Sr, Eau Claire), Brad Barneson (Sr, Strum) and Rob Govek (Sr, Wausau).

Bee recorded the win in the first game as Stout (16-18, 10-13) scored two runs in the first on Barneson's two-run shot. Stout added five more in the second - most of them unearned - as James Foreman (So, Apple Valley, Minn), JW Dachel (Sr, Bloomer) and Barneson drove in a run.

The Yellowjackets (5-24, 2-20) scored two in the third, three in the fifth and one in the eighth. Govek came on in the ninth to record his first save of the season, and would repeat the feat in the second game for his second save.

It wasn't until late in the second game that Stout scored. Nick Kalina (Sr, Potosi) drove in Brock Meyer (Jr, Lyle, Minn) in the eighth and Scott DePorter (So, Whitewater) brought Kalina home with a single.

The Blue Devils added another run in the ninth when Meyer tripled to bring in Foreman.

Lunde was the pitcher of record when Stout got their two runs, giving him his seventh win of the season, as the pitching contingent held the Yellowjackets to one hit.

Meyer held the hot bat for the Blue Devils, going 4-for-7 in the two games.

JW DACHEL NAMED WIAC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MENOMONIE - In six games last week, UW-Stout's JW Dachel (Sr, Bloomer) smacked out 13 runs batted in with a batting average of .435 (10-for-23) with eight runs scored, two doubles, and four home runs for a slugging percentage of 1.087. Dachel drew five walks (three intentional) and had an on-base percentage of .536.

For his efforts, Dachel was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) baseball position player of the week.

For the first time this year, Dachel was used strictly as a designated hitter. Dachel got three of his home runs against UW-River Falls, hitting two in the opener, then another in the second game. He clubbed a two-run, first inning shot against Stevens Point to put Stout in the lead of the second game with the Pointers.

On the season, Dachel leads the team in RBI with 33 and has a team-high eight home runs. Dachel is hitting .339 (41-for-121) with 24 runs scored, 10 doubles and two triples. Dachel has a team-high slugging percentage of .653.

The Pioneers' Wendi Siedschlag led off the sixth inning with a home run for the game-winner as Stout (9-16) was held to five hits.

BLUE DEVILS GET SWEEP OVER OLES TO SNAP LONG SKID

MENOMONIE - UW-Stout got just what they needed most - a couple of wins - as the Blue Devils snapped a nine-game losing streak with a sweep over St. Olaf, Tuesday, April 30 at Wakanda Park in Stout's final regular season contests. Stout took the first game, 10-2, in six innings, then had to overcome seven errors to win, 9-7, in the nightcap.

In the opener, every Blue Devil (8-14) starter had at least one hit and Kaela Wold (Fr, Altoona) continued her assault on opposing pitching, getting a home run and going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Wold's two-run home run came in a three-run Blue Devil third inning. After scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth, Stout put the Oles away in the sixth with four runs.

The second game was an uphill battle all of the way.

The Oles (10-22) took a 3-0 lead in the first, but Stout cut the gap to 3-2 in the second when Erin O'Connell (Fr, Altoona) hit her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot far over the left field fence.
