February 27, 2002ST. BENEDICT ENDS STOUT'S SEASON IN NCAA FIRST ROUNDST. JOSEPH, Minn - St. Benedict went on a 16-2 run late in the game to hand UW-Stout a 91-80 loss and end the Blue Devils' season in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, Wednesday, Feb. 27, in St. Joseph, Minn. With Stout (23-5) trailing 66-64 at 9:32 remaining in the game, the Blazers (24-4) went on a 16-1 run to take an 82-65 lead and the rest was history. The Blazers were able to beat Stout's pressure defense for most of the evening, but especially in the second half. St. Ben's also frustrated the Blue Devils, which was evidenced by Stout's foul count that sent the Blazers to the line 38 times, sinking 26. Stout had four players foul out of the game and had two players with three fouls. Stout sent St. Benedict to the line for the double bonus midway through both halves. But the Blue Devils couldn't really complain about the line, going there 29 times themselves, making 21 shots. After trailing by eight points in the first half, Stout went up 47-39 later in the half and carried a 47-44 lead into the locker room. The Blazers tied the score coming out of the locker room. The teams traded lead changes several times during the second half, but the Blazers took command. Michelle Barlau had 28 points for the Blazers to lead all scorers. Mia Peterson chipped in 22 points and Danni Hannon added 11. Kim Johnson pulled down 16 rebounds. The Blue Devils were led by Stacie Anderson (Sr, Clayton) with 13 points. Amy Zelinger (Sr, Racine) and Erin Churchill (Fr, Plum City) each had 12 points and Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) finished with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Stout held a 28-16 lead on the boards after the first half, but the much taller Blazers wound up finishing the game with a 47-41 lead off the glass. St. Benedict will travel to Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Wash., Saturday, March 2. UW-Stevens Point defeated Lake Forest College, 88-52, in another NCAA playoff game. The Pointers will travel to No. 1 and four time national champion Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., on Saturday. (The Pointers did upset Washington to hand them their first loss of the season.)
February 26, 2002BLUE DEVILS LEAD WIAC ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMMENOMONIE - Five members of the UW-Stout women's basketball team were named to the 2001-02 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Team and coach Mark Thomas was named the coach of the year. The WIAC regular season and tournament champion Blue Devils (23-4, 15-1) landed two members on on the first team, two members on the all-defensive team and three players were named honorable mention. Guard Amy Zelinger (Sr, Racine) was a first team selection for the second consecutive year and guard Tanya Halbach (Jr, Janesville) moved up from honorable mention last season to join Zelinger on the first team. Zelinger was a repeat selection on the all-defensive team and she was joined by forward Laura Verdegan (So, Tony). Verdegan was an honorable mention choice and and was joined by guard Stacie Anderson (Sr, Clayton) and swing player Lindsey Erichsen (Fr, Spring Valley, Minn), one of only three freshmen named. With the Blue Devils still in NCAA playoff action, Zelinger, Halbach and Erichsen are all tied for the team lead in scoring average with 9.5 points. Verdegan and Anderson are each averaging 9.3 points. Zelinger, who has played all five positions this season, is pulling down 3.8 rebounds, dishing out a team-high 2.85 assists and is second on the team in steals with 2.07. Zelinger had 21 blocked shots. Halbach went down for the remainder of the season with a new injury in the WIAC quarterfinals, but is still the team's leading 3-pointer shooter, hitting 37-of-93 long range bombs (.398), ranking her third in the league in 3-pointers made and fourth in 3-point percentage. Verdegan leads the team in steals and is third in the WIAC with 2.41. She is the Blue Devils' leading rebounder, averaging 5.1, and is tops on the team in shooting percentage, hitting 94-of-170 shots (.553). Verdegan blocked 35 shots. Anderson returned to the line-up after sitting out last season with a knee injury. The always-intense Anderson is knocking down 35-of-108 3-point shots, many of them at critical times. She leads the team in free throw percentage, hitting 52-of-65 attempts (.800), ranking fifth in the conference. Erichsen has stepped into college basketball and has made the transition, leading the team in scoring nearly the entire season. She is second on the team in rebounds (4.9) and shooting percentage (90-199/.452). Thomas collects his third conference coach of the year honors, taking the award in 1992-93 and 1996-97. Thomas led the Blue Devils to their second WIAC title and their first outright conference title. Stout shared the title during the 1996-97 season. Stout was picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll. Thomas, who is in his 15th season with the Blue Devils, led Stout to their most wins in a season (23) and their best ever conference record (15-1). Stout is currently on a 13 game winning streak, the second longest in school history. Thomas as a career record of 243-140.

March 2, 2002VERDEGAN FINISHES SECOND WITH SCHOOL RECORD TRIPLE JUMPWHITEWATER - UW-Stout's Laura Verdegan (So, Tony) had little trouble making the transition from the basketball court to the track as she finished second in the triple jump at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday, March 2 at UW-Whitewater. A starter on the Blue Devils' basketball team, Verdegan, only three days after the completion of the basketball season, set a school record in her first collegiate indoor meet, jumping 38-feet, 3.50 inches, well past Beth Schwab's 36-7.75 jump in 1994. The jump qualified Verdegan automatically to the NCAA Division III Championships next weekend. Verdegan competed last year during the outdoor season, finishing third in the triple jump at the national meet and setting the school record. Andi Schwabenlender (Sr, Bristol) came up a quarter inch short of matching her school record in the pole vault, finishing ninth with a leap of 9-4.25.
March 1, 2002LUER PLACES SECOND IN SHOT AT WIAC CHAMPIONSHIPSWHITEWATER - UW-Stout's Jenney Luer (Sr, Colfax) finished second in the shot put at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, March 1 at UW-Whitewater. Luer tossed the shot 46-feet, 1.50-inches to finish behind the host Warhawks' Tabitha Fendrick, who topped the field with a throw of 47-0.25. Both are NCAA Division III qualifying distances. Fendrick is currently ranked first in Division III, Luer, third. Ann Schachtner (Fr, Somerset) placed seventh to score in her first collegiate meet. Schachtner is a member of the Blue Devils' women's basketball team, whose season ended Wednesday. The Blue Devils' distance medley relay team placed seventh (13:27.22).

February 25, 2002BLUE DEVIL BASEBALL SURE TO SEE CHANGE MENOMONIE - Change is imminent for UW-Stout's baseball team. The conference schedule has changed. The spring break trip has changed. The line-up has changed. And the head coach has changed.Craig Walter begins his first year as the coach of the Blue Devils, the third coach for Stout in as many years. Walter follows former Blue Devil Joe Vavra who, after a one-year stint with Stout, returned to the major leagues. Vavra followed Terry Petrie, who had coched at Stout for 30 years. Walter will look to lead Stout through this course of change - and he relishes the opportunity. "I like this team a lot," said Walter who took over in late August, "but I can see they are a little apprehensive. They have had so many coaches. Our job is to give the kids confidence, confidence in themselves and confidence in the coaching staff. "Every player on this team will have a role. They will need to know where their contributions will lie. I like to use a lot of players. Every player will get a chance to contribute." The Blue Devils will have to adjust to the loss of All-America player Brad O'Connell, who is with the Los Angeles Dodger organization, all-region third baseman Dave Rueber, who is with Stout as a coach and four year pitcher Zak Arneson. Walter, a former pitcher in the Kansas City organization, is optimistic about his pitching staff. "We have a lot of returning pitchers," Walter said. "They have been around the block. I have spent a lot of time with the pitchers, and I'm not saying I have five aces out there, but have guys with good knowledge." Matt Lunde (Sr, Eau Claire) leads the team on the mound. Last season, Lunde was 7-3 with eight starts, posting a team-best 2.87 earned run average. Lunde pitched 59.2 innings and had 27 strikeouts. Lunde leads a group for the starting rotation that includes Brian Bee (Sr, Bloomer), Ryan Wolf (Sr, Adrian, Minn), Ryan Jones (So, La Crosse), transfer Adam Rothenbuhler (Sr, Trego) and freshmen Jason Kuehn (Augusta) and Jon Severson (Hayfield, Minn). Bee was 2-2 in 10 appearances, pitching 30.2 inning with 23 strikeouts. Rothenbuhler is much-traveled, playing last year at Point Park College in Pennsylvania. Jones saw limited action last season, appearing in five games. Joe Huiting (So, Little Chute) and Dan Yudchitz (Fr, Stevens Point) could see staring roles, but are expected to pick up middle innings along with Jake Streich (Sr, Winsted, Minn), who returns after a year off due to shoulder surgery, and Brad Kaul (So, Woodland), who saw very limited time, but recorded two strikeouts in two innings. Ryan Jensen (Sr, Cylinder, Iowa) is expected to play a closer role. Jensen got one of Stout's two saves last year and posted a 3-1 record, striking out 16 in 18 innings of work. Left-handed Brad Barneson (Sr, Strum) will slide over from first base to fill in late, if necessary. Walter expects to use a lot of pitchers, and the conference schedule demands that. During the conference season, Stout will play a double header on Wednesdays and follow that up with back-to-back double headers on Saturdays and Sundays. "Our pitchers will know exactly when they will be throwing," Walter said. The other half of the battery - the catchers - is in pretty good shape as well, Walter said. "That is one area where we have good depth," Walter said about his four catchers. " They all have their individual strengths. This is a good problem to have." Justin Biever (Jr, South Milwaukee) is the only catcher back with a great deal of college experience behind the plate. Biever split time last season, but threw out all four runners attempting to steal on him. Senior Nick Sattler (Wausau) will concentrate on the catching position, after seeing time at first base. Scott DePorter (So, Whitewater) and Greg Meinertz (Fr, La Crosse) have both looked good in the preseason, Walter said. Barneson will again hold down first base, a spot he had only five errors in 281 chances. Barneson hit .321 and drove in 19 runs. Nick Kalina (Sr, Potosi) who, along with Barneson, is the team captian will settle in at second base, but has played shortstop and third base during his Blue Devil career. Brock Meyer (Jr, Lyle, Minn), an honorable mention pick last season, gets the nod at shortstop. Meyer hit .321 with 18 RBI and had a field percentage of 91 percent. Third base is a battle between James Foreman (So, Apple Valley, Minn) and Jon Kroening (So, Ladysmith). Kroening saw action in five games last year, while Foreman saw no varsity action. The outfield features two returners, with JW Dachel (Sr, Bloomer) back at right field, and Matt Hoeft (Jr, Elk Mound) moving to left field from center. Dachel hit .333 with 32 RBI and three home runs. Dachel stole four bases in five attempts. Hoeft hit .376 with 32 RBI and 12 doubles. Transfer Jake Riek (So, Boyceville) has made a case for centerfield and Adam Acker (Jr, Minnetonka, Minn) will be ready to play anywhere in the outfield. The Blue Devils, who finished last year at 22-10-1 overall, 6-8 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) will open their season Monday, March 4 against the University of Dubuque at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. Stout will travel to southern Missouri, replacing the traditional Florida trip, because Walter believes they will see better competition. The Blue Devils will face predominately NCAA Division II teams that have been outside for at least a month. Weather also plays a part in Walter's decision. "We don't play in 85 degree weather here," Walter said. "What we see down there (Missouri) is what we will get up here in April." The Blue Devils will open their northern portion of the schedule April 6 when they play at UW-Platteville. The conference schedule changes, with teams playing consecutive doubleheaders against the same team on Saturday and Sunday.
