FOOTBALL The Blue Devils (10-9-1) closed out their season with a 1-0 loss to Carleton, Oct. 30. VOLLEYBALL WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY ICE HOCKEY
November 5, 2001BLUE DEVILS CLOSE OUT THE SEASON AT LA CROSSE UW-Stout Blue Devils (5-3, 3-3) at UW-La Crosse Eagles (4-5, 3-3)Saturday, Nov. 10, 1 p.m. Veterans Memorial Stadium, La Crosse, Wis. ON THE LINE: Both UW-Stout and UW-La Crosse are in the race for a possible second place Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) finish. For that to have a chance of happening, UW-Eau Claire would need to defeat UW-Stevens Point either Stout or La Crosse to tie with the Pointers for second. La Crosse is looking to finish their season above .500, while the Blue Devils are looking for their sixth win of the season. LAST TIME OUT: Stout: The Blue Devils are coming off a 28-25 win over UW-Whitewater Nov. 3. Stout did not commit a turnover and controlled the possession clock, rolling up more than 37 minutes of offense. Stout led 10-0, but Whitewater came back to take a 14-13 halftime lead. The Blue Devils took the lead in the third quarter on a fake field goal attempt when holder Eric Moe rolled to his right to stretch his way into the end zone. After QB Nick Ohman converted the 2-point play, Stout led 21-14 with 6:31 remaining in the third. After a Warhawks field goal, Stouts Luke Bundgaard roared 52 yards TD to give Stout a 28-17 lead. Whitewater added a late score and 2-point conversion for the final score and Stout recovered the onside kick. Bundgaard finished with 134 yards, his first 100-yard game of the season. La Crosse: The Eagles had their three game winning streak snapped with a 10-7 loss at UW-Eau Claire, Nov. 3. Eau Claire took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter as back-up quarterback Nels Frederickson scored on a 7-yard run. The Eagles tied the game early in the third quarter as tailback Andrew Macadlo scored from three yards out. Eau Claires Nick Dicaiula got the game-winning 22-yard field goal with 6:13 remaining in the contest. La Crosse had two possessions in the final minutes, but could not convert. Eagle receiver Nick Rizzo hauled in 12 passes for 102 yards. LAST YEAR: Stout and La Crosse are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are both affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 10-1 overall, 7-0 (first) in the WIAC, and completed an NCAA Division III record turnaround finish. The season ended with a 26-19 first round NCAA Division III playoff loss to eventual Division III runner-up St. John's. The Eagles finished the season at 7-3 overall, 6-1 (second) in the WIAC. THE SERIES: This is the 76th meeting (La Crosse leads, 61-9-5) in a series that began in 1913 with a 12-3 La Crosse win. Last season, Abraham Cruz hauled in an 11-yard pass with 18 second remaining to give Stout a 27-23 win and move the Blue Devils into sole possession of first place. The Eagles committed six turnovers, four interceptions - three snatched by Stouts Kevin Dewey - and two fumbles. The Eagles jumped out to a 14-3 lead, but Stout scored 14 points in the second quarter on grabs by Eric Baker and Brian Johnson. The Eagles regained the lead with a TD and a field goal. Eagles coach Larry Terry (36-37-1 overall, 11-8 at La Crosse) is in his second year with the Eagles. STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "Our ability to run the ball and control the clock was big (in the win against Whitewater). That allowed us to really get into our flow run game. I thought Nicks (Ohman) ability got us out of some situations and the running of (Luke) Bundgaard and (Mike) Etim got us some key yards, especially on third down. (About the fake field goal attempt), we had struggled in the red zone and needed to get more than a field goal. If ever there is a time to pull off a fake, its after they are thinking they stopped you and maybe relax a bit. Now, we have been above .500 three of the last four years, and thats important for our program and for the young guys. "La Crosse always figures out a way to score. They will try to establish the run on us. They are the best defensive team we will face this year. Their defense is senior-laden and they play hard. Our mindset is to play better on the road. We have played well at home, not quite so well on the road. We are a much better team than we were a month ago, and we want a chance to finish second." RADIO: WMEQ 880 AM, Jake Bostrom, Steve Schrantz November 3, 2001BLUE DEVILS CONTROL BALL AND TAKE 28-25 WIN OVER WARHAWKSMENOMONIE - For the first time all season, UW-Stout did not commit a turnover and the Blue Devils went on to a 28-25 win over UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Nov. 3 at Don & Nona Williams Stadium. The Blue Devils, in contrast, snagged two pass interceptions to shut down Warhawk drives and also controlled the possession game, rolling up more than 37 minutes of offense to Whitewaters 23. The Blue Devils (5-3, 3-3) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the second quarter when Eric Baker (Sr, Sarona) put the finishes on a 12-play, nearly seven minute, 60-yard drive as he bulled his way in from one yard out. Justin Zmyewski (Fr, Houston, Minn), who had hit a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter, hit the point after with 12:20 left on the clock. Stouts Kevin Dewey (So, Burnsville, Minn) intercepted a Randy Borgardt pass and returned it 27 yards to the Whitewater 38, but the Blue Devils went nowhere. Whitewater (4-5, 1-5) then put together an 80-yard drive and Borgardt carried over from the one to pull Whitewater to within 10-7. Stout ripped another large piece of time off the clock, using five minutes to travel 37 yards, but were stopped. Zymewski booted a 36-yard field goal - his fifth straight of the season - and Stout held a 13-7 lead. Whitewater systematically moved down the field and Borgardt capped off the 46 yard drive with a 7-yard TD pass to Eric Stauss with 30 second remaining in the half and the Warhawks went into halftime leading 14-13. The teams traded series in the third quarter before Stout put together what could be their best series of the season as freshman quarterback Nick Ohman (Glenwood City) used up six minutes and moved the team 80 yards to paydirt. But the Blue Devils had to be stopped before they would score. Ohman took Stout as far as the Whitewater 2-yard line and got stuck on fourth down. Zymewski trotted out for what would be an apparent 17-yard field, but holder Eric Moe (Jr, Whitehall) picked up the snap and ran to stretch himself into the end zone, extending his arms to just get the ball across the line. Stout went for the two-point conversion, and Ohman rolled left, ran right, reversed field, reversed field again and finally found the end zone as he stretched the ball across the goal line to give Stout a 21-14 lead with 6:31 left in the third quarter. Whitewater got a 35-yard field goal from Andy Barribeau three minutes later to make the score 21-17. In the fourth quarter, Whitewater took possession on the Stout 41 following a punt and moved the ball to the Stout 19. Borgardt was picked off again, this time by a leaping Moe in the end zone. Stout went ahead with 2:20 left in the game when Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser) broke through traffic and raced 52 yards - his longest run of the season - to paydirt to give Stout a 28-17 lead. The Warhawks continued to make the game interesting and drove 52 yards in seven plays to score when Borgardt found Eric Stauss for a 23-yard touchdown pass. The Warhawks tacked on the 2-point conversion for the final score. Stouts hands team handled the onside kick and Stout completed their second consecutive undefeated home regular season. Stout finished with 318 total yards, 245 by the run, 101 in the air. The Warhawks had 260 total yards, 158 by passing, 102 by rushing. Bundgaard picked up his first 100 yard game of the season, carrying the ball 22 times for 134 yards. Ohman gained 61 yards, but was sacked three times and netted 35 yards. Ohman completed 11-of-28 passes for 91 yards. Chad Wurth led the Warhawks in rushing with 110 yards on 22 carries. Borgardt completed 10-of-21 passes for 117 yards. Eric Stauss hauled in five passes for 63 yards and two TDs. The Blue Devils will wrap up their season Saturday, Nov. 10 when they travel to UW-La Crosse.
October 30, 2001BLUE DEVIL SOCCER CLOSES OUT SEASON WITH 1-0 LOSS TO CARLETONMENOMONIE - The term "unlucky" is used considerably in soccer, and UW-Stout was on the wrong end of the term Tuesday, Oct. 30 as they lost, 1-0, to Carleton College at Don & Nona Williams Stadium in both teams final game of the season. The Blue Devils outshot the Knights 14-6, but could not pierce the net and Carletons Birungi Mutebi scored with 20 minutes remaining in the game for the winning goal. November 3, 2001BLUE DEVILS START FAST, FALL UNDER FLURRY OF GOALSMENOMONIE - After jumping out to a quick lead, the UW-Stout defense couldnt handle a flurry of UW-Eau Claire goals and were toppled, 6-2, by the Blugolds, Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
