BLUE DEVILS TO CLOSE OUT HOME PORTION OF SCHEDULE

UW-Whitewater Warhawks (4-4, 1-4) at UW-Stout Blue Devils (4-3, 2-3)
Saturday, Nov. 3, 1 p.m.
Don & Nona Williams Stadium, Menomonie, Wis.

ON THE LINE: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference may be the Wacky WIAC, but the picture got a little clearer, especially for UW-Stout. Mathematically, Stout still has a chance at a share of the conference title. UW-Eau Claire sets on top of the heap with a 4-1 record. UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse are all in second with 3-2 records. Stout, UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh are in fifth with 2-3 records and UW-Whitewater is sweeping the cellar at 1-4. So far, Eau Claire, Stevens Point and Oshkosh hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Blue Devils.

LAST TIME OUT: Stout: For the third straight week, Stout put themselves into a deep hole by halftime, but unlike the previous week, against River Falls, could not dig out of the 27-3 hole and fell at Stevens Point, 34-24. Quarterback Nick Ohman led the Blue Devils to three second half touchdowns and finished the day with a career-high 253 passing yards, connecting on 19-of-42 attempts. Stout outgained the Pointers, 384-357 in total yards.

Whitewater: The Warhawks allowed Eau Claire 21 second quarter points and fell to the Blugolds, 31-18. The Warhawks fell behind, 21-3, at halftime, but came back to outgain the Blugolds in total offense, 470 total yards to Eau Claire's 430. Warhawk wide receiver Steve Tenhagen caught two touchdown passes giving him 14 this season and surpassing the school record for TDs receptions in a season. Tenhagen is also approaching the school season marks for receptions and yards receiving. The Warhawk defense gave up 301 yards in the air.

LAST YEAR: Stout and Whitewater are members of the eight-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and are both affiliated with the NCAA Division III. Stout was 10-1 overall, 7-0 (first) in the WIAC, and completed an NCAA Division III record turnaround finish. The season ended with a 26-19 first round NCAA Division III playoff loss to eventual Division III runner-up St. John's. The Warhawks finished the season at 5-5 overall, 3-4 (fifth) in the WIAC.

THE SERIES: This is the 44th meeting (Whitewater leads, 32-9-2) in a series that began in 1928 with a 20-0 Whitewater win. Last season, the Blue Devils clinched sole possession of the conference title with a thrilling 14-13 win at Whitewater. Stout led 14-7 late in the fourth quarter, but Whitewater came back to pull within 14-13 when Chad Wurth scored from 24 yards out with 1:27 left. Wurth, who was the Warhawks' placekicker, was injured and Whitewater went for the two point conversion, but the pass fell untouched to give Stout their first conference title in 35 years. Only twice has Stout defeated Whitewater over two consecutive years - 1948-49 and 1981-82.

OFFENSIVE LOOK: Whitewater: 2-back I pro-set; Stout: multi-pro. DEFENSIVE LOOK: Whitewater: 5-2; Stout: 3-4.

COACHES: Stout coach Ed Meierkort (40-48 career) is in his ninth year and has the most wins of any Stout football coach. Whitewater's coach Bob Berezowitz (111-58-2) is in his 17th year with the Warhawks.

STOUT COACH ED MEIERKORT SAYS: "We dug too big a hole against a better team. For some reason, our defense has started poorly in the last two games. We showed nothing offensively in the first half, then we showed the heart this team has and dominated the third and fourth quarters.

"This is a young team. Our future is bright and we have some unfinished business this year. I am not disappointed where we are at. At this time next year, we will be looking at a different story. Whitewater, which is in a similar boat, has a quality team with a very good running game and very good wide out (Steven Tenhagen). This is our senior's last home game and we want to extend our unbeaten home conference streak. A win would put us at five (wins). Can't get to six without getting five."

POINTERS HAND BLUE DEVILS A 34-24 LOSS

STEVENS POINT - The good news for UW-Stout football fans is the Blue Devils controlled the second half of the game. The bad news is UW-Stevens Point completely controlled the first half of the game and the Pointers went on to hand Stout a 34-24 loss, Saturday, Oct. 27 in Stevens Point.

Stevens Point (5-2, 3-2) jumped out to a 27-3 halftime lead and, despite a furious second half comeback, the Blue Devils (4-3, 2-3) came up short and dropped out of the race for the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) crown. Mathematically, Stout is still in the race, but UW-Eau Claire, which defeated UW-Whitewater today to move to 4-1, holds the tie-breaker over Stout based on head-to-head competition.

Six teams started the day in a tie for second place, including Stout and Point. UW-Platteville knocked off UW-Oshkosh and UW-La Crosse defeated UW-River Falls. Stout falls into a three way tie for fifth with the Titans and the Falcons.

The Pointers needed only two plays to get on the board. Scott Krause hit Kurt Kielblock with a 20-yard pass to the Stout 42. Krause then carried 42 yards to paydirt with only 33 seconds off the clock.

The Blue Devils got their only points of the half on the following drive, mostly on the strength of three Nick Ohman (Fr, Glenwood City) passes to take the ball to the Point five yard line. Justin Zmyewski (Fr, Houston, Minn) hit a 22-yard kick to make the score 7-3 with 10:55 left in the quarter.

The Pointers scored three times in the second quarter. Krause scored his second TD of the afternoon, from one yard out with 7:23 left. Ross Adamczak scored from 11 yards out with 2:06 left in the half and Steve Jones ran in from 32 yards about a minute before the halftime to give the Pointers a 27-3 halftime lead.

Stout put together a good drive in the third quarter, but it would go for naught. Starting at their own 14, the Blue Devils drove to the Pointer 26 before Ohman was picked off in the end zone.

Stout held, then scored on the next drive when Ohman found Adam Moiles (So, High Rolls, New Mexico) for a 29-yard score, Moiles first collegiate TD, to cut the Pointer lead to 27-10 with 20 seconds left in the quarter. Stout added a score two minutes into the fourth, with Ohman hooking up with tight end Brian Johnson (Sr, Hudson) for a 12 yard strike.

The Pointers added what would be the knockout punch with 5:35 left in the game when Lance Gast rushed to score from 39 yards.

Stut got a consolation score late, driving 82 yards, capping off the drive when Ohman paired with Dan Austin (Fr, Clintonville) for a 14-yard pass play.

The Blue Devils outgained the Pointers, 384-357. Ohman completed 19-of-42 passes for 253 yards and three TDs. Moiles was 2-for-2 for 37 yards, to total 290 passing yards. Johnson collected four passes for 70 yards. Seth Mattison (Fr, Byron, Minn) had four catches for 57 yards. Stout was limited to 94 yards rushing with Luke Bundgaard (So, Weyerhauser) getting 69 yards.

The Pointers rushed for 254 yards with Lance Gast getting 141 yards. Krause completed 8-of-15 passes for 103 yards and two scores.

Stout will close out the home portion of their schedule Saturday, Nov. 3 when they host Whitewater at 1 p.m.

ZMYEWSKI NAMED WIAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MENOMONIE - Place kicker Justin Zmyewski (Fr, Houston, Minn) kicked his first two collegiate field goals - including the game-winner - in UW-Stout's 26-23 win over UW-River Falls, Saturday, Oct. 20. For his efforts, Zmyewski was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) special team player of the week.

Zmyewski nailed a 47-yarder in the third quarter to give Stout a 23-20 lead, then hit a 36-yarder to break a 23-23 tie with eight minutes left in the game to give Stout their final cushion.

EAU CLAIRE KNOCKS BLUE DEVILS OUT OF CONFERENCE TOURNEY

EAU CLAIRE - UW-Eau Claire handed UW-Stout a 4-1 loss to eliminate the Blue Devils from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) tournament in the quarterfinals, Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Bollinger Field in Eau Claire.

Eau Claire took a 1-0 lead into the locker room on a Megan Oswall shot six minutes before halftime. The Blugolds' Kris Unterweger added another goal six minutes into the second half, then the Blugolds tacked on a third in the 73rd minute.

Stout had an opportunity when Nellie Sivertsen (Jr, River Falls) got loose on a breakaway, but the shot was stopped.

Stout broke the shutout when Carrie Schrank (Fr, Reedsburg) scored unassisted, hitting the upper left of the net in the 82nd minute from a free kick. The goal was the first the Blugolds had allowed in 407 minutes. The Blue Devils had one goal called back for offside, and Sivertsen broke away once more, but again was turned away. Eau Claire added their final goal in the final minute of play. Eau Claire outshot Stout, 15-3.

The Blue Devils (10-8-1) will wrap up their season, Wednesday, Oct. 31 when they host Carleton College at 7 p.m. at Nelson Field.

RIVER FALLS - After breezing through a three-game win over Aurora University, UW-Stout made it harder on themselves against St. Scholastica and had to come from behind to down the Saints, 3-1, in the final day of the UW-River Falls Tournament, Saturday, Oct. 27.

BLUE DEVIL HOCKEY TEAM MAKES SHORT WORK IN SEASON OPENER

APPLETON - The UW-Stout hockey team put the puck in the net more times when they were shorthanded than when they were at full strength as the Blue Devils opened their season with a 5-1 win over Lawrence University, Friday, Oct. 26 in Appleton.

Stout recorded three shorthanded goals and had two when they were at full strength.

Stout wasted no time getting their season underway, when Aaron Decker (Sr, Mound, Minn) scored only 52 seconds into the game.
