UW-OSHKOSH, ELMHURST'S MARKANICH LIVE UP TO FAVORITE STATUS
COLFAX, Wis. - Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Elmhurst College's Jennie Markanich lived up to their pre-meet favorite status at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Cross Country meet Saturday, Nov. 11 at Whitetail Golf Club in Colfax, Wis.
Oshkosh used superior depth at their No. 3, 4, and 5 spots to claim the title to move past UW-Stevens Point, 87-101. The Pointers had two of the top three finishers, but the Titans' top five finishers all placed in the top 26.
Elmhurst's Markanich was the only performer to crack the 18-minute mark in the 5-kilometer run, recording a time of 17-minutes, 59.0-seconds, to improve on her third place finish from last year. Markanich had a 13 second lead over Stevens Point's Leah Juno, who finished at 18:12.1 and Becky Lebak at 18:12.6.
Elmhurst finished third with 132 points. Washington University was fourth (137) and the University of Chicago fifth (142). The top five schools advance to the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships Saturday, Nov. 18 in Spokane, Wash. The top five teams qualify to the national meet as do the seven individual performers from teams that do not qualify.
The top 35 performers are named to the NCAA Division III All-Region Cross Country team.
