Four UW-Stout alumni recently received awards for their work, two in the teaching field and two more for their work in design.

Kurt Wismer, who graduated in 2000 in marketing and business education, received the Wisconsin Business Education Association K-12 Outstanding Educator Award at the WBEA annual conference Oct. 17 in Eau Claire.

Wismer teaches business, marketing and information technology for the North Fond du Lac School District and is pursuing a master’s degree in career and technical education at UW-Stout. He previously worked in the Seymour and Shiocton school districts.

In addition, Wismer is on a team of three EdTech Sages consisting of Google Certified Teachers and Authorized Google Trainers from northeast Wisconsin. The EdTech Sages specialize in creative education technology tools, according to their website.

“I am a proponent of educational technology and the opportunities it creates. Many of my classes are flipped or blended. I thrive in project-based learning environments,” Wismer said. “I am lucky to have a job that I do not consider work. I truly enjoy what I do. When you are passionate about your work, it is easy to be successful.”

Wismer also is on the WBEA Executive Board as marketing director.

Dawn Oler, a 2003 graduate in family and consumer sciences education, has been named Teacher of the Year by the Illinois Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Oler teaches family and consumer science at Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, Ill.

Veronica McCracken, a 2012 graduate in interior design, and Mary Brandt, a 2014 graduate in interior design, were part of a winning design team for the Fusion + Fashion Show held Oct. 3 in Minneapolis.
McCracken is an interior designer for MSR, an architecture and interior design firm in Minneapolis and Hyattsville, Md. Brandt is an intern with Shea Design of Minneapolis.

McCracken, Brandt and their team won two awards, Best Interpretation of Musical Venue and the People’s Choice Award. Entrants were asked to create couture ensembles inspired by music venues from around the world.

Fusion + Fashion is sponsored by the Northland Chapter of the International Interior Design Association. A portion of the proceeds go to charity.
