Opportunities with a Reading Teacher License
Reading teacher certification (WI 316) is required for the following teaching assignments:
- A reading assignment for more than one class per day
- A reading assignment in a Title I program identified as a reading program
- A reading assignment in a reading recovery program, if not part of a self-contained classroom
Will the reading teacher certification course credits apply toward a graduate degree at University of Wisconsin-Stout?
Yes, you may apply the Reading Teacher Certification graduate credits as electives in the online Master of Science in Education degree.
May I enroll in one of the reading courses without taking the entire course sequence and without getting a Masters degree?
Yes, you may register for individual courses for salary lane change, licensure renewal, or professional development. Simply complete the secure, no-hassle online registration form . You do not need to apply for admission to the university's graduate program if you are only enrolling in one course.
What are the required courses?
All courses are three graduate credits and offered online. The course sequence is:
- RDGED 701 Developmental Reading K-12
- RDGED 702 Reading in the Content Areas K-12
- RDGED 703 Children's Literature in the Reading Program
Or
RDGED 704 Young Adult Literature in the Reading Program - RDGED 706 Assessment & Evaluation of Reading and Language Development
- RDGED 705 Instructional Techniques For Assisting Students with Reading Difficulties
- RDGED 707 Practicum in Reading Difficulties (The Practicum course will be offered online with a requirement that you assess and instruct a school-age student in your local community.)
