Poverty in Schools

EDUC  744-962 2 semester hours graduate credit
Instructor: Kathryn Gjerseth
Designed for individual classroom teachers or leadership study teams
interested in studying the characteristics and issues facing
economically disadvantaged students. Investigate how poverty affects
learning, traits of high-performing high-poverty schools, and strategies
to enhance the well-being and improve the achievement of low-income
students.

Includes analysis of non-school supports and opportunities that both complement learning in schools and collectively result in better outcomes for economically disadvantaged students. The course will connect policy, practice, and research.
