Description
Designed for lead teachers, grade level team leaders, department heads, program coordinators and administrators

The course focuses on instruction-related leadership and team building skills to improve student achievement. Activities focus on strategies for managing conflict and political issues that influence instructional improvement and the process of school accountability.

During this course participants will:

  • Review strategies for facilitating teams efficiently, managing conflict and utilizing team decision making and problem solving
  • Apply evidence-based research when analyzing instructional leadership conflict scenarios and integration of appropriate team problem solving activities
  • Design an individual action plan applying instructional leadership best practices in a building/district environment

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze, compare and classify the characteristics of an effective and successful leader

  2. Analyze leadership attributes, styles, and ethical leadership and their importance for leaders to be successful;

  3. Demonstrate strategies for facilitating teams efficiently, managing conflict and utilizing team decision making and problem solving;

  4. Apply evidence-based research when analyzing instructional leadership conflict scenarios and integration of appropriate team problem solving activities;

  5. Identify strategies for creating, sustaining and measuring change;

  6. Implement and facilitate collaborative professional development activities including team learning communities (book, content-based lesson study, professional development study team);

  7. Design an individual action plan applying instructional leadership best practices in a building/district environment utilizing a collection of resources promoting an organizational culture for success (examples: selection of textbooks and other instructional materials that support the objectives and building school improvement goals, setting annual team agendas, participation in peer evaluations, making budget decisions, helping decide student policies, serving as member of personnel selection teams, overseeing induction activities for initial educators, mentoring experienced colleagues, setting goals and benchmarks using data as evidence of success)
