This course timeframe is designed to provide flexible scheduling of internship placements. Participants will be expected to complete a self-paced orientation to the instructor's tools using the course management system before beginning the internship.
Catalog Description
Practicum in teaching online with a cooperating online instructor. Application of online pedagogy and technology evaluated through observation, discussion and reflections. Completion of a professional development plan and an e-portfolio of evidence of attainment of online learning standards. (Note: The practicum may only be taken after all other courses for the Certificate in E-Learning and Online Teaching are completed.)
This course provides a mentored online teaching experience for participants who have completed the first four courses in the Certificate program. Graduates of the certificate program will have real time experience in e-learning and online teaching.
Content Outline
The learning modules are structured around an introduction, readings, activities, an activity checklist, learning rubric, and interactive group discussion. Required activities include:
- Participating in online class discussions with the instructor and peers and sharing responses to readings, online resources, literature review, and field research
- Reflecting on what is learned when viewing best practice case studies

At completion of the course, students will:

Evaluation
Each student’s participation and performance will be evaluated on the basis of rubrics designed to assess products such as:
- Reflective writings about the weekly events of instruction
- Weekly summaries of technology issues encountered during class
- A professional development plan setting goals based on lessons learned during the practicum
- A learning management system based presentation of a coherent sequence of instruction
- An electronic portfolio including an articulated instructional sequence, examples of discussion facilitation, examples of professional communications, multiple measures of evaluation, learning reflections and other learning artifacts created during the E-Learning Certificate Program
- Practicum coordinator’s evaluation of the student’s online teaching performance.
- Cooperating online instructor’s evaluation of the student’s online teaching performance
Students in the E-Learning Graduate Certificate Program are expected to contribute artifacts to their electronic portfolio that represent the best practices of online instruction aligned to the ISTE/NETS for Teachers. An evaluation of each portfolio will include reviewing the technical functionality of the artifacts and the match between the artifacts and NETS-T Standards.
