This course meets the Wisconsin Department of Instruction professional development requirement for online teaching. “Beginning July 1, 2010, no person may teach an online course in a public school, including a charter school, unless he or she has completed at least 30 hours of professional development designed to prepare a teacher for online teaching.” [Wisconsin State Statute 118.19(13)]"
Who should enroll?
The course is for both experienced educators, trainers and newcomers interested in designing online and hybrid courses, adding an online component to enhance traditional face-to-face instruction, or converting courses for online delivery. You will use the technologies to gain practical "hands-on" experience.
This course prepares learners to lead and manage instructional challenges in a variety of online settings and participants may include instructors from advanced placement high school courses, technical schools, virtual K-12 schools, community colleges, university online programs, as well as trainers in continuing education, business, the military, government, healthcare, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.
Description
Explore online and blended applications for e-learning using an open source learning management system, Moodle, and the D2L learning management system. You will have the opportunity to create your course content with Moodle, an inexpensive way for educators to create an effective online course.
You will be introduced to many of the concepts and tools that online instructors use. Establish a firm foundation of technical expertise and e-learning theory and become an online teaching professional.
Activities include hands-on experience with Web 2.0 tools such as blogs and podcasts as well as search tools, surveys, quizzes, discussion systems, and creating online course content. These experiences will enhance any existing web-based materials or course management tools you are already using.
Activities will be differentiated, and you may explore ideas that appeal to your interests and course development needs.
Textbook
Readings and lectures will be available online within the text of each module.
The class is highly interactive with a significant discussion component. All discussion postings, projects and assignments will be submitted via the course discussion board and dropbox. Activities are conducted according to a schedule with specific due dates each week; there are no required "live" chat sessions.
