E-learning for Educators

ONLINE COURSE EDUC 760  3 semester hours graduate credit

Description: Explore online and blended applications for e-learning using an open source learning management system, Moodle, and the D2L learning management system. You will have the opportunity to create your course content with Moodle, an inexpensive way for educators to create an effective online course.

Activities include hands-on experience with Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis and podcasts as well as search tools, surveys, quizzes, and discussion systems.

This course prepares learners to lead and manage instructional challenges in a variety of online settings in educational institutions, corporations, the military, health care and government agencies. The emphasis is on what you can use right now in your teaching or training.

NOTE: This is open as an individual course to students seeking professional development and is also one of the required courses for individuals pursuing the Graduate Certificate in E-Learning and Online Teaching

The course is for both experienced educators, trainers and newcomers interested in designing online and hybrid courses, converting courses from interactive television systems to Web-based delivery, or using Web-based components to enhance face-to-face instruction.

Participants may include instructors from advanced placement high school courses, technical schools, virtual high schools, community colleges, university online programs, as well as trainers in continuing education, business, government, health care, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.

You will have hands-on experience creating online course content. These experiences will enhance any existing web-based materials or course management tools you are already using.

Activities will be differentiated, and you may explore ideas that appeal to your interests and course development needs.

Because this class is asynchronous and open to you 24/7, you may participate from your home or work computer during hours that are best for your work and family schedule. Advanced computer or programming skills are not required. Learners with a basic understanding of Internet browsing, email, and word processing will be able to integrate online instruction into their professional practice. Instruction will be differentiated to accommodate learners with varying levels of technical knowledge.

The class is highly interactive with a significant discussion component. All projects/assignments will be submitted via e-mail or presented via the WWW. Instructor/peer comments will be available through discussion groups or sent by e-mail. This class is a valuable first step for those interested in exploring a career as an online teacher/facilitator.
