Who should enroll?

This course is designed for classroom teachers and support staff at all levels including special education teachers. This course provides helpful, well-tested techniques for creation of a stimulating, effective classroom for all students - from English language learners to special education students to students with a variety of learning styles.

Description

Research-based instructional methods to meet the varied needs of all learners in today's classrooms including English language learners, students with special needs, and students with a variety of learning styles and interests. Alternative assessment methods and strategies to manage a differentiated instruction.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will:

  1. Apply current research and reflect on the impact of culture, socioeconomic class, and gender on teaching and learning.
  2. Analyze classroom scenarios and modify lessons using strategies appropriate for content, multiple intelligences, and learning styles of diverse learners.
  3. Demonstrate techniques for differentiating content, process, and product based on student readiness, interest, and learning profile.
  4. Implement differentiated instructional strategies and demonstrate appropriate planning considerations, guidelines, and procedures to establish a positive learning environment.
  5. Evaluate the role of ongoing assessment in successful differentiation and analyze misuses and controversies in assessment practices that address learner differences.
  6. Synthesize the relationship between daily assessment and improved student learning and examine how lessons can be modified based on frequent assessment information.
  7. Critically analyze personal classroom practices and viewpoints regarding differentiation.
  8. Develop an action plan demonstrating essential principles of differentiation and varied assessments to measure students' mastery of the same essential concepts in different ways.
