Inspiration & Kidspiration: K-12 Strategies to Build Study Skills & Comprehension
EDUC 744 917 2 semester hours graduate credit

Exploration of visual thinking strategies to enhance learning in all curricular areas and grade levels. Integration of technology tools and creation of a portfolio of graphic organizers to enhance students' critical thinking skills in note-taking, outlining, organizing and communicating information, and reading comprehension. Designed for K-12 classroom teachers, special education/learning disabilities, ESL teachers, speech clinicians, library media specialists and technology coordinators.
Consider enrolling as a team with others from your district. You will learn the tools and techniques for effective use of Inspiration® and Kidspiration software, including:
- Summarizing the key points of a unit or chapter
- Organizing note taking to improve comprehension and retention
- Brainstorming ideas to determine prior knowledge
- Assessing student comprehension of written material
- Planning research projects
- Arranging ideas in outline form and converting to a concept map
- Designing a portfolio of graphic organizers including idea webs, concept maps outlines, diagrams, and comparison charts to assist student understanding and encourage critical thinking
- Using audio features of the software to enhance speech and language skills
Because this class is asynchronous and open to you 24/7, you may participate from your home or work computer during hours that are best for your work and family schedule.
The class is highly interactive with a significant discussion component. All projects/assignments will be submitted via e-mail or presented via the WWW. Instructor/peer comments will be available through discussion groups or sent by e-mail.
