EDUC 767 Designing Computer-Based Training (CBT)
ONLINE COURSE 3 semester hours graduate credit

Description
Just-in time scenario-based modular development, user interface design, visual design, usability testing, and execution of common instructional strategies employed in self-paced products. Research, trends and standards in computer-based training; development of reusable learning objects using multimedia software.
Software: This course focuses on the design of CBT relevant to your working environment. For your portfolio project, use SCORM compliant multimedia software that you are
either familiar with or SCORM compliant multimedia software that
your organization currently uses. If you do not have a preferred
multimedia software tool, then Camtasia by Tech Smith is recommended
as an easy to use, SCORM
compliant multimedia tool. Camtasia is available for both PCs and
Macs. Wait to download the free 30-day trial until
your instructor provides information during week 4 of the course.

NOTE: This is course open to students seeking professional development and is also one of the required courses for individuals pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design.
Participants may include
- virtual high school teachers, curriculum coordinators, professional development coordinators, and continuing education professionals who want to update or expand their knowledge in curriculum development, assessment, and revitalize their teaching and learning strategies;
- instructional/educational technologists who support educators in redesigning courses;
- health educators pursuing a career in educational or service settings in hospitals, dental programs, clinics, long term care facilities, retirement/assisted living facilities, in-home healthcare or other professionals who deliver instruction or continuing education to health professionals including computer-based learning;
- continuing education and outreach facilitators in museums, government, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations and military settings;
- web developers, software designers and computer support personnel who develop reference materials, documentation, and customer support tutorials;
- instructional designers for textbook or e-learning companies.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Apply the systematic process of instructional design to develop a Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) compliant reusable learning object.
- Compare and contrast varying instructional strategies for Computer-Based Training (CBT) and select the appropriate strategy for the learning requirements.
- Apply principles of interface design and usability testing and address cultural needs and diversity in CBT design.
- Summarize advantages and disadvantages of designing instruction for reusability.
- Apply the components and instructional theories of well-designed CBT when creating self-paced learning products.
- Articulate factors involved with designing, developing, and implementing assessments in CBT.
- Organize and sequence content for tutorials by flowcharting a branching scenario for remediation.
- Analyze how to repurpose content for different audiences, contexts, and delivery media.
