Description
This course is designed to help online educators apply the most valuable performance-based assessment techniques, feedback procedures and evaluation tools to assess student learning in the online classroom.

For both experienced professionals and newcomers interested in e-learning and online teaching, students will have an opportunity to plan and design formative and summative evaluation methods that will help prevent plagiarism, and explore grading procedures, electronic evaluation tools using electronic record keeping systems and methods for evaluating e-portfolios, discussion postings, and group projects.

Target Audience
Instructors from virtual high schools, technical schools, community colleges, university online programs, as well as trainers in continuing education, business, government, health care, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.

In this course you will learn how to match assessment to learning outcomes and select and plan for appropriate online evaluation techniques. Activities will explore current research and technology tools for authentic assessment, discourse analysis, self and peer evaluation, rubrics, online surveys, tests and mini-quizzes for self-paced tutorials. You will have the opportunity to explore and practice use of assessment tools that are most relevant to your personal instructional needs.

Content Outline

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate development and use of academic standards across the curriculum and application of standards and objectives in online classroom assessment and evaluation.

  1. Analyze the assessment process including types of evaluations, the relationship of assessment to learning, institutional & curriculum objectives, online testing, high stakes testing, No Child Left Behind (NCLB), corporate assessment framework (CAF) and standardized testing. (WI DPI 8) (ISTE NETS-T: IV)
  1. Apply mapping to align assessment to learning outcomes, develop rubric criteria and select appropriate online assessment. (WI DPI 8) (ISTE NETS-T: I, III, V, VI)
  1. Apply current research and technology tools to create authentic assessment, discourse analysis, self and peer evaluation, rubrics, online surveys, tests and quizzes for self-paced tutorials. (WI DPI 8) (ISTE NETS-T: I, III, V, VI)
  1. Value fairness and adapt e-learning assessments appropriately for diverse populations of students, including students with exceptionalities. (WI DPI 3) (ISTE NETS-T: IV,VI)
  1. Evaluate and utilize appropriate technology tools including e-gradebooks, calendars, spreadsheets and e-portfolios.

  1. Demonstrate research-based practices for choosing assessment models and apply plagiarism detection tools and support ethics, community building and team trust that help prevent cheating. (WI DPI 8) (ISTE NETS-T: I, III, IV, V, VI)

Course objectives are aligned with the Wisconsin Standards for Teacher Development and Licensure (WI DPI) 1, 3, 8 and International Society for Technology in Education, National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T) I, II, III, V, VI..
