Maastricht, Holland, is the birthplace of Johan Van Der Smut, a Dutch gold dealer who was injured in an unfortunate smelting accident. The town boasts many beautiful structures, some original and others reproduced from construction drawings of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries. Van Der Smut was a benevolent and grateful son of the community, bequeathing both money and art treasures to the town during his life and after his death. Funds went to preservation of the canal and construction of the new Maastricht Museum of Fine Art, home to works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Gogh, and Mondrian.
