Description
Have you been waiting to learn how to create a website that moves beyond simple page layouts into the areas of interactive Web page design and integration of the World Wide Web with instructional activities?

Using Dreamweaver software, you will create sophisticated page elements such as image maps, animations, templates, libraries and style sheets. You will learn how to make your web site a central part of instruction for students and home/school communication with parents.

You will apply basic principles of message design in the development of Web-based communications with learners and apply principles of visual and media literacy when creating online instructional and professional communication materials.

Prerequisite: All participants should have some background experience using one of the following: FrontPage, Pagemaker, Claris HomePage or HTML.

Course Outline

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the course, students will:

  1. Recognize and apply basic principles of message design in the development of Web-based communications with learners.
  2. Apply principles of visual and media literacy for the development and production of instructional and professional materials.
  3. Apply development techniques such as storyboarding and or script writing to plan for the development of Web-based lessons and supplementary materials.
  4. Produce web-based lessons and supplementary materials for instructional and professional communication using Web page software.
  5. Produce instructional Web page elements using various aspects of interactive web media.
  6. Utilize imaging devices to produce computer-based instructional materials.
  7. Utilize appropriate software for capturing web pages, audio files, and video files for developing online presentations.
  8. Utilize appropriate instructional material and strategies in various learning contexts.
  9. Identify and apply copyright and fair use guidelines.

This online class is designed as an interactive asynchronous learning experience. You can work on activities and participate in discussions at times that are convenient for your work and family schedule.

In order to participate successfully, you must have reliable Internet access, including an e-mail account and access to the World Wide Web, and you must regularly access your account.

You will be using your access frequently to participate in discussions with the instructor and other participants. Participants will discuss and share readings via a private discussion board, and there will be optional opportunities for live chats with the instructor and with colleagues.

You will connect to learning modules via the World Wide Web and interact with other participants and the instructor through email and online class discussions. Modules include tutorials, readings, and hands-on training. Participants will discuss and share readings via a private discussion board, and there will be opportunities for live chats with the instructor and with colleagues.

All projects/assignments will be submitted via e-mail, the course discussion board, or presented via the WWW. Instructor and peer's comments will be sent by e-mail.

Conducted online with no on campus class sessions required, you may participate using your home or work computer without having to drive to the university campus at set times.

Required Software and Hardware
The following software and hardware is needed to complete the activities:

  1. Dreamweaver 8 by Adobe is available online at http://shop.adobe.com with discounts for educators

    or


    CS3 (Creative Suite) Web Standard,
    which includes Dreamweaver  and other Adobe web development software, available at WISC: the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog. The cost is $210 for students.

    NO OTHER VERSIONS OF DREAMWEAVER ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR COURSE USE.
    The cost of CS3 may seem high, but it contains the very best in Web development software programs, including Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and Contribute. Its retail price is $999.00.

    NOTE: You must be registered for a course at UW-Stout to access the WISC catalog. You will not be able to purchase software until you are assigned your e-mail username and password.

  2. Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 6 or later (free downloads)

  3. A printer connected to the computer you will use for most of the course will be a great help.

NOTE: Adobe CS3 Web Standard will not operate on Windows 98.
