Have you been waiting to learn how to create a website that moves beyond simple page layouts into the
areas of interactive Web page design and integration
with instructional activities?
Using Dreamweaver software, you will create
sophisticated page elements such as image maps,
animations, templates, libraries and style sheets.
You will learn how to make your website a central part of
instruction for students and home/school communication with parents.
Description
Application of the principles of message design, visual and media literacy to interactive web-based learning experiences. Design of web-based instructional materials across the curriculum.
Prerequisite
Although no previous experience or training in web page design is needed to succeed in this class, the following computers skills are required: ability to copy and paste, create folders, save files, find files, and edit images. The course will be challenging for new users of a computer.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the course, students will:
- Describe the basic principles of message design and relevance to the development of web-based instructional activities. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 4) (NETS-T 2)
- Apply principles of visual and media literacy in the development and production of web-based instruction. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 4) (NETS-T 2)
- Demonstrate understanding of accessibility guidelines when creating web-based instructional material for a diverse range of learners including special needs students. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 3, 7) (NETS-T 4)
- Utilize organization techniques such as storyboarding and script writing when planning web-based lessons and supplementary materials. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 4) (NETS-T 2)
- Develop image maps, animations, templates, libraries and style sheets, use multiple design elements, and apply basic principles of web page design to create effective web-based curriculum using web design software. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 4) (NETS-T 2)
- Utilize imaging devices and appropriate software for capturing web pages, audio files, and video files to develop online presentations. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 4) (NETS-T 2)
- Apply legal and ethical guidelines for privacy, copyright, and fair use related to the design of web-based instructional resources.(WI DPI Teacher Standards 10) (NETS-T 4)
- Demonstrate an awareness of policies regarding publication of teacher web pages, student work and student photographs.(WI DPI Teacher Standards 10) (NETS-T 4)
- Design interactive web-based lessons and supplementary resources that incorporate digital tools and promote student learning and creativity in a subject area such as: science, math, social studies, language arts, the arts, family and consumer science education, marketing and business education and technology education. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 4, 7) (NETS-T 4)
- Use rubrics to assess effectiveness of web-based resources for learning and home/school communication. (WI DPI Teacher Standards 9) .

This online class is designed as an interactive asynchronous learning
experience. You can work on activities
and participate in discussions at times that are convenient for your work and
family schedule.
You must have
reliable Internet access, including an e-mail account and access to the World Wide Web, and
you must regularly access your account.
You will be using your
access frequently to participate in discussions with the instructor and other participants.
Participants will discuss and share readings via a private discussion board, and there will be optional
opportunities for live chats with the instructor and with
colleagues.
You will connect to learning modules via the World Wide Web and
interact with other participants and the instructor through
email and online class discussions. Modules include tutorials,
readings, and hands-on training. Participants will discuss and share readings via a

All projects/assignments will be submitted via e-mail, the course discussion
board, or presented via the WWW. Instructor and peer's comments will be sent
by e-mail.
Conducted online with no on campus class sessions required, you
may participate using your home or work computer without having to
drive to the university campus at set times.

Software and Hardware
The following software and hardware is needed to complete the activities:

CS4 (Creative Suite) Web Standard, which includes Dreamweaver and other Adobe web development software, is available at WISC: the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog. The cost is $210 for students. Students who already own Dreamweaver CS3 may use it instead, but
NO OTHER VERSIONS OF DREAMWEAVER ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR COURSE USE. The cost of CS4 may seem high, but it contains the very best in Web development software programs, including Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and Contribute. Its retail price is $999.00.
NOTE: You must be registered for a course at UW-Stout to access the WISC catalog. You will not be able to purchase software until you are assigned your e-mail username and password.
