How do I obtain an Initial Educator License?

Wisconsin - Initial Educator License (Teacher, School Counselor, School Psychologist):

The Wisconsin Initial In-State Education License application is form PI-1602-IS, also available from the School of Education, 267 Home Ec. Complete the application and return it to the Licensing Coordinator in the School of Education, along with the license fee ($100 made payable to Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction).  The Licensing Coordinator will request your transcript, endorse the application, mail it to DPI directly, and issue you a Verification of Program Completion form to show that the application is in process.  Fingerprint cards are required if you have worked, resided, or physically attended classes in a state other than Wisconsin within the last twenty years after age 17.  Please contact the School of Education to obtain the DPI-required cards.

Wisconsin - CTE Coordinator (LVEC) License

Apply for a CTE Coordinator (eligible for LVEC, School to Work, and Ed. for Employment) license by completing form PI-1602-AD. Complete the application and return the application and license fee to the Licensing Coordinator in the School of Education.

Wisconsin - Reading Teacher (316) License

Apply for an Initial Educator reading teacher license by completing form PI-1602-AD. Complete the application and return the application and license fee to the Licensing Coordinator in the School of Education.  Applicants must hold or be eligible to hold a Wisconsin teaching license and have two years of teaching experience.  If experience verification is required, send a completed Employment Verification Form (PI-1613) to each education employer.

Wisconsin - Emergency License

Use the PI-1602-EL form to apply for or renew emergency licenses which are requested by an employing school district after a search for a fully-licensed candidate was conducted and was unsuccessful. Applicants for a first-time 1-year emergency license can mail the application packet directly to DPI.  Applicants renewing a 1-year emergency license must mail the application packet to the Licensing Coordinator, 267 Home Ec, if you are enrolled in a program to gain this additional certification.

Wisconsin - Intern License

Once offered an internship, intern license applications are available online.  You will need to obtain a password from the Placement Coordinator to complete the license application.

Wisconsin - Substitute Teacher Permit

If you held a regular 5-year teaching license at one time which is expired or if you hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university which isn’t in teaching, you are eligible to apply for a substitute permit by using form PI 1602 IS (Wisconsin).  Please see the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction website for more information.

Minnesota - Licensure

Application forms for a First Time Full Professional Minnesota Education License should be requested from the Minnesota Personnel Licensing Office.  To obtain an application by mail, please call (651) 582-8691 or email mde.educator-licensing@state.mn.us.  Return the completed application, license fees and fingerprint card to the Licensing Coordinator in the School of Education, 267 Home Economics, for endorsement.  The Licensing Coordinator will obtain your transcript and process the application.
