Overnight Trips

Where/How to Park

Staff and students who leave campus on an overnight trip as either the driver of a fleet vehicle, the passenger in a fleet vehicle, or as a participant in a "road-trip" or other group activity may need to leave a vehicle on campus. Where you may park overnight, and whether you need a special permit is a function of whether you're the fleet vehicle driver and whether you are the holder of a campus parking permit.

  • The driver of a fleet vehicle, whether a permit holder or not, may park in the fleet parking area. Check the "Driver" section below.
  • Passengers cannot park in the fleet area. Passenger parking is governed by their permit status. Check the section below that matches you permit-holder status.

Students traveling for athletic events, school sponsored events, etc must obtain their own parking permit from Parking Services. Coaches, advisors, or other university staff are not responsible for arranging overnight parking.

Fleet Vehicle Parking Area

The Fleet Vehicle parking area is in Lot 27, south of the General Services Building. Fleet spaces are in the semi-circle, near General Services, and in the fourth and fifth rows from Broadway, on the end of the row nearest GS. Fleet spaces are each signed as being reserved for Fleet Vehicles, and many have an electric plug-in post in between spaces. A driver must park his/her vehicle in a fleet space because the remainder of the parking lot is regulated for valid permit during the day and overnight. The Fleet staff will provide you with a diagram showing the location of fleet spaces in Lot 27.

Staff Permit Holders

Staff permit holders park in lots where overnight parking is prohibited. Therefore, staff permit holders must move their vehicle to Lot 27, south of General Services. The driver of the fleet vehicle may park in the fleet vehicle parking area. Check with fleet staff to make sure you know where the fleet area is within Lot 27. A passenger of a fleet vehicle who needs to park his/her personal vehicle in Lot 27 while off campus should pick up an overnight permit from Parking Services. Any permit holder who will not be parked in Lot 27 overnight may park (outside of the fleet area) using her/his regular permit.

Staff Non-Permit Holders

The driver of a fleet vehicle may park in the fleet vehicle parking area without display of a permit. Check with fleet staff to make sure you know where the fleet area is within Lot 27. A passenger of a fleet vehicle who needs to park his/her personal vehicle in Lot 27 while off campus should pick up a permit from Parking Services. Non-permit holder passengers who need to park in Lot 27 must pick up a permit from Parking Services for parking during either the day or overnight.

Students with a Residence Hall Permit

A resident student permit is not valid in Lot 27 either during the day or overnight. Resident students who are leaving campus should leave their vehicle parked in their regular permit lot.

Students with a Commuter (off-campus) Permit

Off campus students typically have a "C" (campus) permit. That permit is valid in Lot 27 during the day, but not overnight. Any "C" permit holder who will not be parked in Lot 27 overnight may park (outside of the fleet area) using her/his regular permit.

Student Non-Permit Holders

Student non-permit holders who are driving a fleet vehicle may park in the fleet vehicle area. Check with fleet staff to make sure you know where the fleet area is within Lot 27. A passenger of a fleet vehicle who needs to park his/her personal vehicle in Lot 27 while off campus must pick up a permit from Parking Services to park either during the day or overnight.

Drivers of a Fleet Vehicle

The driver of the fleet vehicle may park in the fleet vehicle parking area. Check with fleet staff to make sure you know where the fleet area is within Lot 27. Drivers do not need to display a permit while parked within the designated fleet vehicle area. Only one vehicle may be parked in the fleet area to replace the one vehicle taken off campus. Passengers cannot park in the fleet area.
