Applying for the Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan

Before the Financial Aid Office can process your request for a Parent PLUS Loan, the student must have a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the University of Wisconsin - Stout for the appropriate award year, and have responded to all request for supplement data (such as verification documents). 

If you have not filed a FAFSA, the application is available online at: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov

  • Loan request form will be processed by UW Stout Financial Aid and information will be transmitted to the Department of Education for credit check and approval.
  • Department of Education will send notification to the parent and the UW Stout Financial Aid regarding loan approval/denial. The Parent should call the Financial Aid Office, if denied, to discuss further options.
  • Continue on to Step 2: Master Promissory Note - no need to wait for confirmation

The same Parent who completed Step 1 (Request and Release Authorization form) must complete Step 2. 

Step 2: Master Promissory Note (MPN)

NOTE: The MPN must be completed in a single session. If you exit the MPN before submitting you will have to start from the beginning when you return to the site. 

Step-by-Step Instructions to Complete the MPN:
  1. Click Here, to start the MPN.
  2. Click on "Sign In" in Manage My Direct Loan section
  3. Sign in by entering your personal information including your Dept of Education PIN Number. *
  4. Locate "Master Promissory Note" on left side of the screen, and then click on "Complete MPN"

  • Select Parent PLUS as the MPN Type Selection.

  • Your progress is recorded at the top of the page as you complete each step.
  • Enter and verify your personal information and your student's information.
  • Select Wisconsin for School State, and select University of Wisconsin - Stout from the drop-down and click "Continue".
  • List two references and click "Continue"
  • Review Section C: Borrower Request, Certifications, Authorizations, and Understandings.
  • Review Section D: Promise to Pay
  • Review Section E: MPN Terms and Conditions
  • Review Section G: Important Notices
  • Place Personal and School Information and Personal references
  • Type your name, and click "Sign"
  • Review your Master Promissory note before submitting by clicking on HTML version and click "Continue".

  • *The parent is required to use his/her Department of Education PIN. This is the same PIN that parent used to electronically sign the FAFSA. If you do note have a PIN, you may request one from the Official PIN website.

Important Notes:

  • Department of Education will send notification to UW Stout Financial Aid once the MPN is completed and accepted.
  • The parent will receive a disclosure statement that gives specific information about any loan UW-Stout plans to disburse under the MPN, including the loan amount, loan fees and expected loan disbursement dates.
  • If you are applying for a Parent loan for more than one student, you must complete a separate application and MPN for each one.
  • If the same parent applies for future Direct Parent loans for the same student, he/she will not have to complete a new MPN. Additional Direct Parent loans can be borrowed on a single MPN for up to 10 years.
  • Loan funds are electronically disbursed to the student’s account to pay for education related expenses (tuition, fees, room, meal plan, etc).  Any funds in excess of the bill will be refunded back to the student.
