Academic Dishonesty

Academic Dishonesty Defined


The Board of Regents, administrators, faculty, academic staff and students of the University of Wisconsin System believe that academic honesty and integrity are fundamental to the mission of higher education and to the University of Wisconsin System. The university has a responsibility to promote academic honesty and integrity and to develop procedures to deal effectively with instances of academic dishonesty. Students are responsible for the honest completion and representation of their work, for the appropriate citation of sources, and for respect of others’ academic endeavors. Students who violate these standards must be confronted and must accept the consequences of their actions.

Definitions of academic dishonesty as provided by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators include:

  • Cheating:  The intentional use or attempted to use unauthorized material, information or study aids in any academic exercise.
The use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise.
  • Plagiarism:  The intentional use of or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another as your own in any academic exercise. 
  • Fabrication:  The intentional and unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise.
  • Facilitating academic dishonesty:  The intention, or knowingly helping or attempting to help another to commit an act of academic dishonesty. 

UW-Stout also considers academic dishonesty to include forgery of academic documents, or intentionally impeding or damaging the academic work of others.
