Transfer Transition

Welcome to the University of Wisconsin-Stout!

We are delighted that you have chosen UW-Stout to continue your education!

We recognize that transfer students have a range of college experiences and individual needs. Our Transfer Transition steps are designed to guide you through the registration and orientation process. If you have questions as you progress through the steps below, please contact the Advisement Center at 715-232-1465.

ADMITTED TRANSFER STUDENTS

To confirm your intent to attend UW-Stout, initiate the evaluation of your transfer credits, and begin the enrollment/registration process, click on each step below to read the detailed instructions.

Step 1: Set Password and Activate your UW-Stout E-mail

Your Stout e-mail account is the primary source of communication between you and the University. Please check it frequently for important messages from university offices.
  • To set a password you will need your student ID number. If you do not know, or are unsure of your student ID number, please contact Admissions at (715) 232-1801.
  • After successfully setting a password, you will be directed to activate your Stout e-mail account. This is on a Hotmail server, so don't be confused when that screen opens up!
  • This username and password are used for all Stout related login functions.

Step 2: Complete the Transfer Registration Survey

surveyLogin to the survey with your Stout username and password. Completing this on-line form will declare your intent to attend UW-Stout and register for classes. Once submitted, Undergraduate Admissions will evaluate your transcripts. Watch your Stout e-mail account for notification that your Transfer Credit Report has been completed. Information on how to interpret your Transfer Credit Report can be found here.

Step 3: Take the Wisconsin Placement Tests in English and Mathematics

Your notification that your Transfer Credit Report has been completed should include information on whether or not you have to take either the English or Math placement test.

Students transferring within the UW System who have already taken the Wisconsin Placement Tests do not need to take them again. If you have transfer credit for any of the following English courses you do not need to take the English Placement Test (EPT):

  • ENGL-090 Writing Workshop
  • ENGL-101 Composition I
  • ENGL-102 Composition II
  • ENGL-111 or ENGL-112 Freshman English Honors

The requirement for Mathematics coursework varies greatly across UW-Stout majors. You may have transfer credit in Math; however it may not be adequate preparation for the major you are entering. Once your Transfer Credit Report is complete your Program Director or an advisor from the Advisement Center will advise you on whether you need to take the Math Placement Test.

Placement testing is administered by the University Counseling Center. Visit their webpage for a list of upcoming test dates.

Step 4: Contact an Advisor

When you receive notification that your Transfer Credit Report has been completed (refer to Step #2 above), you are ready to begin working with an academic advisor on course selection.

If you have been accepted into a major, your program director will provide you with course advisement. Find his/her contact information in the list of Program Directors. Be aware that response time may take 7-10 days.

If you are Undeclared, an advisor from the Advisement Center will contact you via your Stout e-mail account to assist you with course selection. Advisors are assigned alphabetically by the first letter of your last name.

If you have questions, feel free to contact the Advisement Center via email at advisement@uwstout.edu or by phone at 715-232-1465.

We recommend you review our Advising Guide for general advising resources.

Step 5: Registration/Enrollment Steps

You are ready to register for courses once you have received recommendations from your Program Director
(if you are declared in a major) or an Advisement Center Academic Advisor (if undeclared).

Registration/Enrollment Steps:

  1. Login to Access Stout: from the Stout home page select Logins at the top of the page; click on Access Stout under Personal Accounts; login with the same User Name and Password as for Stout e-mail.

  2. Complete the Fee Payment Agreement (linked under the Finances portion of your Access Stout Student Center page).

  3. Search for courses using Access Stout – select courses to put into your "Shopping Cart" and register on or as soon as possible after your assigned Enrollment Date and Time.

  4. Enroll in courses using Access Stout as soon as possible to insure the best outcome for registration; 12 credits is the minimum for full time, 18 is the maximum you may register for now.

  5. Keep checking Access Stout until the start of the semester for new course opportunities that don't exist now.

  6. You may want to use the Wait list feature if some courses suggested by your advisor are full at the moment. It is recommended to choose other open courses rather than Wait Listing.
